Replacing the backlight in a conventional LCD/LED television typically costs $150–$300 through a professional repair shop. The replacement LED strips alone commonly cost about $30–$100, while a DIY repair usually totals roughly $50–$140 after tools and shipping. Large televisions, in-home service, difficult-to-find parts, and uncertain diagnoses can push the bill above $300–$400.

Before paying for a backlight replacement, confirm that the backlight is actually the failed component. A black screen can also result from a power board, main board, cable, T-Con board, or failed LCD panel.

TV backlight replacement cost at a glance

Repair route Typical planning range What it includes
Replacement strips only $30–$100 Parts; not labor, diagnosis, tools, or shipping
DIY repair $50–$140 Strips plus basic tools and possible shipping
Independent repair shop $150–$300 Parts and bench labor in many cases
Large-screen or in-home repair $250–$400+ Higher handling, travel, and labor costs
Board-related repair $100–$450 Depends on the power board, LED driver, or main board

These are U.S. planning ranges, not guaranteed quotes. Local labor rates, taxes, shipping, diagnostic fees, model availability, and warranty terms can substantially change the final price. iFixit’s backlight guidance places many replacement strip kits around $30–$60, while published repair estimates commonly put professional backlight work between about $100 and $300. Fixr cites approximately $210 as a common payment for an LED-backlight repair, but that figure is an estimate rather than an official industry average.

What a TV backlight actually is

Most televisions marketed as “LED TVs” are LCD televisions illuminated by LED strips or LED arrays. The LEDs provide the light behind the screen; the LCD layer shapes that light into the picture. When the LEDs or their driver circuit fail, the television may continue producing sound and video data even though the screen appears black.

  • App & Voice Control: Manage the LED TV lights via app or smart voice control with Alexa & Google Assistant. ( Please note that it won't capture colors automatically and support 2.4G only.)
  • Multiple Preset Scenes: Govee Home App offers 99+ preset scene modes and 11 music modes, from which you can choose the lighting effects that suit your mood or the atmosphere around you to enhance your viewing.
  • Music Sync: Govee TV LED Backlight includes a built-in mic, making the color and brightness sync with the music. Experience breathtaking lighting effects that dance with any audio as though you're at a concert.
  • Flexible Installation: The 12.5ft TV backlight can easily cover 4 sides of any 55-65 inch TV. It is recommended to use the cable clips to secure the TV LED strip lights to make them snugly fit your TVs.

OLED televisions work differently: each pixel produces its own light, so an OLED does not have a conventional LED backlight strip to replace. Mini-LED and QLED televisions may still use complex LED backlight arrays, and their parts and labor can cost more than those of a basic edge-lit LCD set.

Signs the backlight may have failed

  • The TV has sound, but the picture is black or extremely dim.
  • A faint menu or moving image appears when you shine a flashlight at the screen.
  • Only one side or section of the screen is dark.
  • Dark circular patches suggest individual LEDs or sections have failed.
  • Bright circular spots can indicate a detached diffuser lens rather than a dead LED.
  • A blue or purple tint can indicate aging LEDs, although it is not conclusive.

A safe preliminary test

  1. Turn on the TV and play a known source.
  2. Confirm that audio works.
  3. Darken the room.
  4. Shine a bright flashlight obliquely across the screen.
  5. Look for a faint menu, input label, or moving picture.

A faint image makes a backlight problem more likely, but it does not identify whether the failed part is an LED strip, LED driver, power board, or related circuit. Do not open the television merely to perform this test. Internal power supplies can retain hazardous voltages, and the LCD panel is exceptionally fragile.

What might be wrong instead?

A black or dim screen is not automatically a backlight failure. Other possibilities include:

  • LED driver or power-board failure
  • Main-board failure
  • T-Con or display-signal failure
  • Loose or damaged internal cable
  • Failed LCD panel
  • Input-source, software, or power problem

An entirely dead TV, especially one with no standby light, points more toward power, main-board, or input trouble than a simple failed LED strip. A repair shop should diagnose the set before ordering parts.

Cost by repair route

Parts only: about $30–$100

Common replacement strip kits often cost about $30–$60. Current model-specific listings at ShopJimmy have shown many sets in roughly the $25–$65 range, with larger and specialty assemblies costing more.

The price depends on the exact model, number of strips, LED count, connector layout, screen architecture, and whether the set uses an edge-lit, direct-lit, or full-array design. Buying by screen size alone is risky.

  • Energy-Saving & Eye Protection: Low-voltage 5V LEDs reduce glare and power consumption while providing long-lasting, flicker-free backlighting for movie nights, gaming, or everyday use.

DIY repair: about $50–$140

A DIY budget should include more than the strips:

  • Replacement strip kit: approximately $30–$100
  • Screwdrivers and plastic pry tools
  • Suction cups or panel-handling equipment for larger screens
  • An LED backlight tester or multimeter if diagnosis is uncertain
  • Shipping and the cost of a wrongly ordered part

ShopJimmy’s component listings have included LED backlight testers around $37.79. A tester can be useful for someone repairing several televisions, but usually is not worthwhile for a single repair that a professional will diagnose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The low parts price hides the main risk: accessing the strips requires removing the LCD panel and optical diffuser layers. A cracked panel can turn a $60 repair attempt into a complete loss.

Independent shop: about $150–$300

Professional quotes commonly combine the replacement set, diagnostic work, panel removal, reassembly, and testing. Published guides list general TV repair around $100–$300 and backlight work around $100–$250, but those figures include different models and service conditions. A shop may also charge a diagnostic fee, minimum labor fee, pickup charge, or transport fee.

Ask whether the diagnostic charge is applied to the repair. Published repair guidance commonly places diagnosis around $50–$100, while labor rates may run approximately $60–$125 per hour depending on location and shop.

In-home and large-screen repair: $250–$400 or more

Large sets require more careful lifting and workspace, and some need two technicians. In-home service can add roughly $50–$100 or more for travel, mounting, and handling. One company’s published in-home pricing places many backlight jobs around $220–$360, but local rates vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 75-inch television can be especially expensive to repair because the panel is difficult to support safely, replacement parts may be scarce, and a panel break during disassembly is costly. Some 75-inch repairs exceed $400 or are economically impractical.

How screen size affects the price

Size matters, but it is not a complete pricing system. A 55-inch edge-lit TV, a 55-inch direct-lit model, and a 55-inch premium full-array TV can use very different parts and require different labor.

TV size Parts-only planning range Professional planning range
32–43 inches $25–$60 $150–$250
50–55 inches $35–$80 $175–$325
65 inches $60–$120+ $220–$400+
75 inches and larger Highly model-dependent Often $300–$500+ or uneconomical

This table is an editorial planning estimate synthesized from current parts listings and published repair ranges, not an industry-standard rate card. The exact model and part number matter more than screen size alone.

What the repair involves

A professional repair generally includes:

  1. Diagnosing the symptom and confirming the full model number.
  2. Removing the rear cover and disconnecting boards, speakers, and cables.
  3. Separating the LCD panel from the chassis.
  4. Removing and carefully labeling diffuser sheets and optical layers.
  5. Replacing the LED strips or array.
  6. Reassembling the optical layers without dust, fingerprints, shifted sheets, or pinched cables.
  7. Testing brightness, uniformity, picture output, and operation.

The dangerous and expensive stage is not removing the rear cover; it is handling the thin LCD glass and diffuser stack. A panel can crack, bend, or develop pressure damage. Diffuser sheets installed out of order or slightly shifted can cause bright patches, dark areas, or uneven illumination.

Technicians often replace the complete strip set rather than only one failed LED. iFixit compares this approach to replacing a set of aging headlights: other LEDs may have experienced similar heat and operating stress. Replacing only one LED or strip costs less in parts but can leave older components in service and require the panel to be opened again. The correct choice depends on the design, part availability, and economics.

What affects the final quote?

  • Screen size: Larger panels are harder and riskier to handle.
  • Backlight architecture: Edge-lit, direct-lit, and full-array designs use different parts and labor.
  • Brand and model: Model revisions can use different strips even within the same screen size.
  • Parts availability: Older, regional, or unusual models may have expensive or discontinued parts.
  • Part quality: OEM, reputable aftermarket, used, and universal strips have different fit and reliability risks.
  • Service location: In-home work, pickup, delivery, and mounting add charges.
  • Diagnosis: A board or panel problem may require a completely different repair.
  • Warranty: Parts and labor may have separate coverage periods—or no coverage at all.

How to identify the correct replacement part

Before ordering anything, record:

  • Full manufacturer model number, including suffix and regional code
  • Manufacturing revision, if shown
  • Original strip part number
  • Number of strips and LEDs per strip
  • Connector type and position
  • Voltage and current specifications, where available
  • Whether the TV is edge-lit, direct-lit, or full-array

ShopJimmy recommends matching the original part number and exact model number. Do not buy solely from a listing such as “Samsung 55-inch backlight.” Two televisions with the same diagonal size can use incompatible strips.

OEM or genuine parts usually provide the greatest specification confidence but may cost more or be unavailable. Reputable aftermarket sets can offer better availability and value. Used parts cost less initially but have uncertain remaining life. Universal strips are riskier because their dimensions, lens positions, connectors, and electrical characteristics may differ. LG directs customers seeking genuine parts toward its official parts and service route.

DIY or professional repair?

DIY is more reasonable when… Professional repair is preferable when…
The TV is out of warranty. The TV is under warranty or covered by a protection plan.
The exact strip kit is available. The diagnosis is uncertain.
You have a clean, spacious work surface. The TV is 55 inches or larger, premium, thin, or difficult to handle.
You accept the possibility of breaking the panel. The television is mounted or requires difficult removal.
The parts cost is well below the TV’s replacement value. You need a workmanship or parts warranty.

DIY may save substantially on labor, but “$40 in strips” is not equivalent to a $40 repair. Include tools, shipping, lost time, incorrect-part risk, and the possibility of destroying the panel.

Repair or replace the TV?

Use the quote as a comparison with the price of a comparable replacement television—not merely the cheapest TV available. Repair is often worth investigating when the total is below roughly 40%–50% of that replacement cost, particularly if the set is relatively recent, has excellent picture quality, or would be difficult to replace. This is a decision aid, not a universal financial rule.

Replacement is usually more attractive when:

  • The LCD panel is cracked or damaged.
  • The estimate approaches the price of a comparable new TV.
  • The television is old and parts are scarce.
  • The repair has no meaningful warranty.
  • The TV has multiple unrelated faults.
  • The required repair is a complete panel replacement rather than a backlight repair.

A panel replacement is generally far less economical than replacing LED strips because the panel is the primary display assembly. An OLED display problem also requires a different analysis because it does not use conventional backlight strips.

How to get an accurate quote

Give the shop the full model number, screen size, symptom, whether sound works, whether a flashlight reveals a faint picture, and whether any part of the screen remains illuminated. Then ask:

  • Is the quote for one LED or strip, or the complete strip set?
  • Does it include diagnosis, tax, shipping, pickup, delivery, mounting, or in-home service?
  • Are the parts OEM, reputable aftermarket, or used?
  • Does the warranty cover parts, labor, or both?
  • What happens if the panel breaks during the repair?
  • Will the shop test brightness and uniformity after reassembly?
  • What is the total out-the-door price?
  • Is the repair sensible compared with a comparable replacement TV?

A useful estimate can be represented as:

Total cost = diagnosis + parts + labor + travel or transport + tax and shipping − warranty or service-plan coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a $50 diagnostic fee, $60 strip kit, two hours of labor at $90 per hour, and a $25 transport charge would total $315 before tax. That is an illustration of how fees add up, not a market average.

Preventing another backlight failure

Heat and sustained high brightness can contribute to LED wear. After repair, using a moderate picture-brightness setting may reduce operating stress, but it cannot guarantee a longer service life. If the television is in a poorly ventilated enclosure, improve airflow without blocking required vents.

Do not open an in-warranty TV before checking the manufacturer, retailer, credit-card, extended-warranty, or protection-plan terms. Warranty effects depend on the applicable policy, jurisdiction, and whether the work or resulting damage is covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a repair shop replace only one LED?

Yes, but it is often less durable than replacing the complete strip set. Other LEDs may have experienced similar heat and operating stress, and reopening the panel later can cost more than replacing the set initially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does a backlight replacement take?

The hands-on work varies by model and shop. Large or fragile televisions may require additional handling time, and parts availability can delay the appointment. Ask the shop for both the expected bench time and parts lead time.

Does lowering the TV’s brightness prevent backlight failure?

Moderate brightness may reduce heat and operating stress, but it is not a guarantee. Ventilation, component quality, age, and the television’s design also affect service life.

Can an OLED TV have its backlight replaced?

No. OLED pixels produce their own light and do not use conventional LED backlight strips. An OLED display failure is a different, generally more expensive panel-level problem.
