In the United States, repairing a refrigerator that will not cool commonly costs about $90 to $700 when the problem is a coil, fan, start component, defrost system, thermostat, or control board. Compressor or other sealed-system work can run about $400 to $1,000. A technician may also charge a $75 to $150 diagnostic or service-call fee, sometimes applying it to the repair. Those figures are guide estimates, not a diagnosis or guaranteed quote: the failed component, local labor, model, brand, parts availability, warranty, and refrigerator age determine the bill.
Current U.S. repair-cost ranges
Several 2026 pricing guides separate ordinary airflow and control repairs from compressor or sealed-system work. Their ranges are not identical because each guide uses different labor assumptions, service areas, and repair scopes. Treat the figures below as planning numbers until a technician identifies the fault.

| Repair or charge | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic or service call | $75–$150 | CostAndPrice’s 2026 guide, reviewed July 2026; the Appliance Repair Alliance’s 2026 national guide lists $75–$130. Ask whether the fee is credited toward authorized work. |
| Condenser-coil cleaning or condenser-fan work | $90–$260 | CostAndPrice modeled range; cleaning and fan replacement are different jobs. |
| Start relay or capacitor | $90–$230 | CostAndPrice modeled range for the starting components that help the compressor begin running. |
| Evaporator-fan motor | $150–$300 | CostAndPrice range; a June 2026 provider guide gives the same $150–$300 example for its service area. |
| Fan, thermostat, or defrost work | $150–$350 | Appliance Repair Alliance national editorial estimate covering these common categories. |
| Defrost-system repair | $150–$400 | CostAndPrice modeled range; the June 2026 provider guide gives $200–$400 for its own customers. |
| Temperature control or main control board | $200–$700 | CostAndPrice modeled range. Board prices vary sharply by model and part availability. |
| Compressor or sealed-system work | $400–$1,000 | Appliance Repair Alliance national estimate. A June 2026 provider guide lists $400–$800 or more for compressor replacement. |
The ranges should not be added together. A refrigerator may need one component, several related parts, or a different repair entirely. A symptom such as “warm inside” cannot establish which line in the table applies.
Why the same no-cooling problem gets different quotes
The diagnosis changes the price
Cooling depends on several systems: condenser airflow, evaporator airflow, compressor starting, defrost operation, temperature sensing, electronic controls, and the sealed refrigerant circuit. A blocked coil and a failed compressor can produce a similar complaint while requiring very different labor, parts, tools, and recovery procedures. A trustworthy quote identifies the failed part or system rather than pricing the symptom alone.

Local labor and service conditions
The Appliance Repair Alliance says its national editorial ranges shift with local labor rates, brand, and parts availability. A rural trip, emergency appointment, older model, unusual built-in installation, or difficult access can increase labor. Conversely, a common part already stocked locally may reduce waiting time and handling cost. The quoted amount for your address is therefore more useful than an online national average.
Model, brand, and parts availability
Two refrigerators with the same capacity can use different fan motors, sensors, boards, or refrigerant systems. The technician should use the complete model number, not only the brand name. If the original part is discontinued, the technician may need an approved substitute or recommend replacement rather than install an uncertain component.

Check the owner’s documentation and any retailer or manufacturer coverage before authorizing work. A sealed-system or compressor warranty may cover a part while leaving labor, travel, or refrigerant charges to you. A refrigerator still under a service contract may require an authorized provider. Ask for the coverage decision in writing and confirm whether a diagnostic fee remains payable when the claim is accepted or denied.
What a technician should check
A professional diagnosis normally starts with operating observations and electrical and temperature tests, then narrows the fault. The exact sequence depends on the model, but a useful appointment includes:
- Confirming the model number, symptom, temperature settings, and whether the freezer, fresh-food section, or both are warm.
- Checking whether the compressor, condenser fan, and evaporator fan operate when the controls call for cooling.
- Inspecting condenser airflow, frost patterns, door seals, vents, and evidence of ice blocking an evaporator.
- Testing start components, temperature controls, thermistors, defrost components, wiring, and the control board as applicable.
- Distinguishing an airflow, defrost, or control issue from a sealed-system restriction, leak, or compressor failure.
- Documenting the failed part, the labor scope, the part and labor warranty, and the total before work begins.
This process matters because replacing a fan or thermostat will not correct a refrigerant leak, and adding refrigerant will not repair a failed control. Do not approve a component based solely on a general internet symptom chart.

Safe checks you can make before calling
You can collect useful information without opening electrical covers or the sealed refrigeration circuit. Keep the refrigerator plugged in while observing normal operation, but do not touch exposed wiring or moving fan blades.

- Note whether the freezer is cold, whether the fresh-food compartment is warm, and whether either section has visible frost or ice buildup.
- Listen for a normal compressor hum, repeated clicking, unusual silence, or a fan scraping sound. These observations help a technician; they do not prove a failed part.
- Verify that the temperature controls were not accidentally changed and that interior vents are not blocked by food.
- Follow the owner’s manual for unplugging and cleaning access. If the manual permits it, gently remove dust from accessible condenser coils with a suitable brush or vacuum attachment after disconnecting power.
- Restore power and allow the appliance to operate as the manual specifies before deciding whether the symptom remains. If it still does not cool, arrange diagnosis rather than repeatedly cycling the power.
Coil cleaning is maintenance, not a universal repair. It will not fix a failed fan, defrost component, control board, compressor, or sealed-system leak. Do not remove refrigerant lines, bypass safety controls, test live circuits, or attempt compressor or refrigerant work unless you are properly trained and equipped.
How diagnostic and service-call fees work
Many companies charge for travel and the technician’s initial assessment even when you decline the repair. The 2026 guides place that charge broadly between $75 and $150, while the Appliance Repair Alliance’s national range is $75–$130. One June 2026 provider guide lists a $109 fee that is applied toward an authorized repair. A credit policy is not universal, so get it stated before booking.
Questions to ask when scheduling
- What is the total diagnostic or service-call fee for my address?
- Is the fee credited toward parts or labor, and does the credit expire?
- Will I receive an itemized written estimate before any repair?
- Is there an additional charge for a second visit or for ordering a part?
- What warranty covers the repair, and does it cover labor as well as the part?
- Does the technician service my model and perform sealed-system work if that is the diagnosis?
What should appear on the estimate
The estimate should identify the refrigerator, diagnosed fault, parts and quantities, labor, travel or environmental fees, tax, diagnostic credit, expected completion date, and warranty terms. If the technician cannot confirm a component without further testing, the estimate should say what testing is included and what could change the price.
Repair or replace: a practical decision framework
CostAndPrice gives a rule of thumb that repair becomes less attractive when it exceeds roughly half the price of a comparable new refrigerator or when the appliance is past about eight years. Treasure Coast Appliance Repair uses the same 50% comparison but cites a 12-plus-year age reference. These are different heuristics, not guarantees of remaining life.

| Decision factor | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Diagnosed repair total | Compare the complete written quote, including the diagnostic charge, labor, parts, and any required follow-up visit. |
| Comparable replacement price | Compare with a refrigerator of similar capacity, configuration, installation requirements, efficiency, and warranty—not merely the cheapest new unit. |
| Age and condition | Consider age together with door seals, shelves, ice maker, rust, noise, prior repairs, and overall condition. Age alone does not determine the answer. |
| Coverage | Subtract covered parts or labor only after confirming what the warranty actually pays. |
| Likely service life | Ask the technician whether other major systems show wear and whether the proposed repair carries a meaningful parts and labor warranty. |
A 50% threshold is a prompt for comparison, not an automatic replacement order. A well-maintained older unit with a modest fan repair may be sensible to fix; a newer unit with an expensive sealed-system failure may still be covered or may justify replacement depending on the written alternatives.
What consumer repair data can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports’ 2023 repair-or-replace article described a survey of 95,711 members and 108,573 refrigerators purchased between 2012 and 2022. It reported a 6% brand-median rate for refrigerators described as not cooling. That is a survey result, not the probability that your individual appliance will fail this year.
The same article reported median repair costs of about $150–$240 across seven refrigerator problems in an earlier survey. That range covers multiple problem types and should not be used as a current price for every no-cooling repair. Survey medians also do not replace an itemized local estimate.
If you are unsure of the exact problem before hiring a professional, Consumer Reports advises contacting the manufacturer’s customer service. The manufacturer may provide model-specific troubleshooting or direct you to warranty service, but it may not establish the final repair price.

| Compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Diagnosis | Confirm that each company identifies the same failed component or clearly explains why the diagnosis remains provisional. |
| Parts | Check the exact part description, manufacturer or approved equivalent, availability, and whether the price includes required refrigerant or fittings. |
| Labor and visits | Ask whether installation, testing, cleanup, and a return visit are included. |
| Fees and credits | Make sure the diagnostic fee, travel charge, taxes, and any credit are shown consistently. |
| Warranty | Compare duration and whether it covers both parts and labor, as well as exclusions for repeat failures or unrelated components. |
| Timing and service capability | A cheaper quote that cannot obtain the part for weeks may not meet your food-storage needs. Confirm that the provider is equipped for your model and repair type. |
Do not authorize a sealed-system or electrical repair from a vague “cooling issue” estimate. Request the test result that supports the diagnosis and ask what happens if the repair does not restore normal temperatures.
When to stop using the refrigerator
Move perishable food to a safe, properly chilled location if the refrigerator cannot maintain the temperature specified by its manual. Unusual burning smells, arcing, a damaged power cord, water near electrical components, or repeated breaker trips warrant disconnecting power if it can be done safely and arranging qualified service. Do not continue operating an appliance that shows an electrical hazard merely to see whether it starts cooling again.
Information to have ready for a fast, accurate quote
- Complete model and serial numbers, usually found on an interior wall, ceiling, or door frame.
- Purchase date or best age estimate and any warranty or service-contract documents.
- Whether the freezer, refrigerator compartment, or both are affected.
- Recent noises, clicking, frost, leaks, temperature readings, power interruptions, or control changes.
- Photos of the model label, frost pattern, condenser area, and any visible damage, if the service company requests them.
- Your location, access constraints, and preferred appointment window.
Providing this information does not diagnose the appliance, but it helps a technician bring the correct tools and gives you a more useful estimate.

Bottom line on refrigerator repair cost
Plan for a diagnostic charge first, then price the repair by the diagnosed system. The 2026 U.S. guides place many fan, thermostat, start-component, and defrost jobs in the low hundreds, while compressor or sealed-system work can approach or exceed four figures. Get an itemized quote, confirm the diagnostic-credit and warranty policies, and compare the total with a genuinely comparable replacement after considering age, condition, coverage, and expected service life.
