Entering traffic yields to vehicles already circulating. At a modern U.S. roundabout, approach slowly, read the signs and pavement arrows, choose the lane for your destination, and wait for a safe gap in every circulating lane. After entering, keep to your marked lane, travel counterclockwise around the central island, and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk at your exit. Posted signs, pavement markings, and the law of the state where you are driving always control if they differ from this general explanation.

What makes an intersection a modern roundabout?

A modern roundabout is a circular intersection built around a central island. Its approaches curve and narrow the driver’s path, entries are controlled by yield signs or yield lines, and vehicles move counterclockwise in the United States. The curved geometry requires drivers to reduce speed before entering rather than approaching a straight, high-speed crossing.

The design is different from a signalized intersection because traffic can keep moving whenever gaps are available. It is also different from every older traffic circle or rotary. Those facilities may use signals, stop signs, or a different priority rule. Identify the controls at the specific location instead of assuming that every circular junction operates as a modern roundabout.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) describes the modern roundabout as “an intersection with a circular configuration that safely and efficiently moves traffic.” The central island prevents a direct crossing, while splitter islands and curved entry lanes guide vehicles into one-way circulation.

Who has the right of way?

Traffic already in the circle has priority

At the yield line, the driver entering must wait for vehicles already traveling in the roundabout. In a multilane design, that means checking all circulating lanes, not merely the lane closest to the entry. FHWA’s driver handout states: “Drivers must yield to traffic in all lanes of the roundabout, not just in the lane closest to them.” Enter only when a gap is large enough for you to merge without making another driver brake or swerve.

Do not rely on an unexpected courtesy stop

A circulating driver should not stop in the circle simply to wave an entrant in, and an entering driver should not force a merge because a circulating vehicle appears likely to slow. Sudden stops create conflicts for vehicles behind the courteous driver. Treat the yield line as your decision point: slow, scan every lane, and proceed when the normal gap is available.

Yield at marked pedestrian crossings

Pedestrian priority applies at the marked crosswalks on the approach and exit legs, subject to the applicable state and local law. FHWA guidance tells drivers to yield to people waiting to cross or already crossing. Look for children, older adults, and people with disabilities, who may need more time. Do not stop in the circulating roadway to create a crossing that is not marked; use the actual crosswalk and follow local signs.

How to drive through a modern roundabout

  1. Reduce speed before the entry. Follow the posted advisory or regulatory speed and let the curved approach slow the vehicle. Avoid overtaking another vehicle as you approach the yield line.
  2. Read the advance signs. Signs and pavement arrows show which lane serves a left turn, a right turn, a through movement, or a U-turn. Lane assignments vary by roundabout, so do not apply a remembered diagram automatically.
  3. Check the first crosswalk. Look for pedestrians at the approach crossing before reaching the yield line. Stop before the crosswalk when required, leaving it clear for people using it.
  4. Yield to circulating vehicles. Scan left and check every lane you would cross. A vehicle in the far lane can reach your path after the near lane appears empty.
  5. Enter into the marked lane. Once a safe gap appears, merge smoothly and follow the lane line around the island. Do not change lanes across another vehicle’s path inside the circle.
  6. Maintain a steady, moderate speed. Keep scanning for vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, and pedestrians. The island and lane separators are fixed guidance; do not drive over them except where a truck apron or other design feature is explicitly provided.
  7. Prepare for the exit. Use the lane that leads to your destination, check mirrors and blind spots, and signal as required by local law or as a clear indication of your intended exit.
  8. Yield at the exit crosswalk. Before leaving the circle, look for people crossing the exit leg. Stop before the marked crossing if a pedestrian has priority under local law.

Choosing a lane in a multilane roundabout

There is no single lane diagram for every multilane roundabout. The signs and arrows at that location take precedence. FHWA’s general instructional convention places left-turn movements in the left lane, right turns in the right lane, and permits either lane for a straight movement unless markings say otherwise. Some state departments of transportation use a different arrangement for a particular site.

Right turn (first exit) Right lane Posted signs and arrows at the approach
Straight (a through movement) Either lane may be permitted Lane arrows, dashed lines, and destination signs
Left turn or U-turn Left lane Local assignment and any lane-use restrictions

Choose early, before the yield line. Once inside, remain in the lane’s marked path. If your lane does not lead to the exit you wanted, do not cut across another lane at the last moment. Continue around and take the exit on the next pass when doing so is legal and safe.

How to handle pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles

Pedestrians

Crosswalks are commonly located on the entry and exit legs, set back from the circulating roadway. Scan both locations. A person may be crossing while vehicles in the circle continue moving, so do not focus only on the central island. Comply with the crossing rules posted in that jurisdiction and leave the crosswalk unobstructed when stopped.

Bicycles

Cyclists may use the circulatory roadway as vehicle operators or use a separate shared path where one is provided. Give them room, avoid passing within a narrow lane, and expect a cyclist to travel more slowly than motor traffic. Check for a bicycle before entering, changing position, or exiting.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are smaller and can be hidden by a vehicle in the adjacent lane. Recheck mirrors and blind spots before moving laterally, and leave a predictable gap when merging or exiting. Never assume that an apparently empty lane remains empty through the full curve.

Large vehicles and the truck apron

Trucks and buses have wider turning paths and longer rear overhangs. A large vehicle may need to occupy more than one lane or use a paved truck apron around the central island. Do not drive beside it or try to pass while both vehicles are curving through the circle. Stay behind, give it room, and let it complete the maneuver.

Arizona has a state-specific rule requiring drivers to yield to qualifying large trucks in roundabouts. That requirement should not be treated as a nationwide rule; other jurisdictions may use different wording or controls. Follow the signs and the law where you are driving.

Emergency vehicles

If an emergency vehicle is approaching on another leg, do not enter the roundabout unless emergency personnel direct you. If you are already circulating, continue far enough to clear the vehicle’s path and follow instructions from responders or police. Avoid stopping on a crosswalk, at an entry, or in a position that blocks the emergency vehicle’s route. Exact procedures can vary with the incident and local direction, so obey on-scene instructions over a memorized maneuver.

What if you miss your exit?

Stay in your lane, continue counterclockwise, and take another circuit to reach the exit if the layout and traffic conditions permit. A second pass is safer than crossing a lane line, stopping in the circle, backing up, or turning against the flow. If a lane drop or special marking requires a different action, follow that marking and the posted signs.

Modern roundabouts versus older traffic circles

Feature Modern roundabout Older circle, rotary, or neighborhood traffic circle
Priority at entry Entering vehicles yield to circulating traffic. May give entering traffic priority or use stop signs, signals, or other controls.
Traffic movement Counterclockwise, one-way circulation; vehicles proceed when gaps allow. Direction and control can vary by design and location.
Speed and conflicts Curved entries lower speed and reduce direct crossing conflicts. Geometry and conflict pattern may be less restrictive or may include signalized movements.
Pedestrian and bicycle treatment Crossings are generally on approach and exit legs; cyclists may use the roadway or a shared path. Crossing locations and bicycle rules depend on the facility.
Lane guidance Advance signs, arrows, and lane lines assign movements. Local signs and markings determine how to enter, circulate, and leave.

The phrase “traffic circle” is not a guarantee of modern-roundabout priority. Look for yield signs or yield lines at entries and read the lane arrows before deciding who must wait.

Why agencies use modern roundabouts

Lower entry speeds and fewer crossing conflict points can reduce the likelihood that a mistake becomes an injury-producing crash. FHWA’s Proven Safety Countermeasures material explains the safety rationale in those terms. An FHWA driver handout reports that modern roundabouts reduce severe intersection crashes by an average of 80 percent. That is an agency-reported average, not a promise for every site or every crash type; the handout does not establish that every roundabout will achieve that result.

Roundabouts can also keep traffic moving during gaps instead of requiring every approach to wait for a signal phase. Their benefits depend on proper design, visible markings, appropriate speed, and drivers following the assigned lanes. A roundabout is not automatically safer when a driver enters too fast, ignores a yield sign, or changes lanes across another vehicle.

A practical decision checklist

  • Am I approaching a modern roundabout, or another type of circular intersection?
  • What do the advance signs and pavement arrows require for my destination?
  • Have I slowed enough to read the crossing and see all circulating lanes?
  • Is a pedestrian waiting at or using the approach or exit crosswalk?
  • Are a bicycle, motorcycle, truck, or bus hidden in a neighboring lane?
  • Can I enter without making a circulating driver brake or swerve?
  • Will my lane carry me to the intended exit without a last-second crossing?
  • If I miss the exit, can I safely make another circuit instead of improvising?

Local rules remain controlling

FHWA’s informational guides provide national instructional principles, not a substitute for a state statute or the signs at a particular intersection. Signal requirements, pedestrian wording, lane assignments, truck rules, and emergency procedures can differ by jurisdiction. When a posted instruction conflicts with a general driving tip, obey the posted instruction and applicable local law.
