A new bathroom can mean remodeling one you already have or adding a bathroom where there isn’t one. Those are different projects with different costs. For an existing bathroom, Angi’s July 2026 guide estimates $3,000–$10,000 for minor work, $10,000–$25,000 for a partial remodel and $25,000–$80,000 for a full remodel. For an addition, HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 guide gives a much broader $5,000–$75,000 range, with an estimated average of $35,000. These are U.S. planning benchmarks, not quotes: your location, room, existing conditions, design choices and permit requirements all matter.

What does it cost to remodel an existing bathroom?

Angi’s July 2026 guide groups existing-bathroom remodels by scope. Its broad $2,500–$30,000 range and estimate of around $70–$250 per square foot cover varying projects; they should not be treated as substitutes for the scope-based bands below.

Remodel scope Angi estimate What the scope generally means
Minor work $3,000–$10,000 A refresh that keeps the existing layout and most fixtures.
Partial remodel $10,000–$25,000 Some fixtures or finishes are replaced, without rebuilding everything.
Full remodel $25,000–$80,000 A more extensive renovation with multiple fixtures and finishes replaced.

These descriptions are practical distinctions, not a guarantee that a particular project will land in a particular band. Angi’s bathroom remodel cost guide notes that layout changes can add plumbing and electrical work.

How reported homeowner spending compares

Houzz Research’s September 30, 2026 U.S. Bathroom Trends Study reported a $15,000 median spend on bathroom upgrades in 2025, up from $13,000 in 2024. For major remodels—defined as projects that upgraded at least the shower—the 2025 median was $25,000; the top 10% spent $70,000. The study surveyed 1,619 U.S. homeowners about recent or planned bathroom renovation projects. These are survey medians and a high-end threshold, not recommended budgets or contractor bids.

What does it cost to add a bathroom?

HomeAdvisor’s June 20, 2026 guide estimates $5,000–$75,000 to add a bathroom, an average of $35,000 and an estimated $375 per square foot. The guide also distinguishes between building within existing space and constructing a bump-out:

Type of addition HomeAdvisor estimate
Convert existing space $200–$250 per square foot
Build a new bump-out $400–$550 per square foot

These estimates come from HomeAdvisor’s bathroom addition cost guide. The overall range is broad because the total depends on build type, size, materials, labor, permit requirements and plumbing and electrical work. A conversion uses space already inside the home; a bump-out involves new construction, so the two per-square-foot estimates are not interchangeable.

What has the biggest effect on the estimate?

Scope and layout

Keeping the room’s layout and existing plumbing locations generally limits the amount of work. Replacing all finishes and fixtures is a larger project than refreshing a few surfaces. Moving walls or relocating plumbing and electrical can add work and cost; a contractor should price those changes separately rather than treating them as a cosmetic upgrade.

Labor and location

Angi estimates labor at 40%–65% of a bathroom-remodeling budget. HomeAdvisor estimates labor averages 55% of a bathroom-addition budget. These are each publisher’s general estimates, not a fixed share for an individual job. Local labor rates and the complexity of the work affect the actual figure.

Plumbing distance for an addition

A bathroom farther from existing plumbing lines may cost more because new lines have to be run. When comparing possible locations, ask the contractor to explain how plumbing access affects the scope and estimate.

Fixtures and finishes

Fixture brand and model, tile and countertop materials, and custom versus prefabricated choices can change the total. Angi describes a prefabricated shower kit as a lower-cost alternative to a custom shower, with fewer choices in sizes and materials. Its shower installation guide gives $600–$1,800 for a premade-kit project including labor and materials. That is an installed project estimate, not a kit’s retail price; check that a kit fits the space and confirm what components and installation work it includes.

Permits and concealed conditions

HomeAdvisor reports permit costs ranging from $50–$2,000, with requirements varying by location. Angi also flags permits and possible hidden water damage, mold, or plumbing and electrical updates as budget considerations. Ask your local building authority which permits apply and have the contractor explain how concealed conditions would be handled if uncovered.

How to make a useful project budget

  1. Decide which project you mean. Separate remodeling an existing bathroom from adding one. For an addition, identify whether it would convert existing space or require new construction.
  2. Write down the scope. List the fixtures and finishes to keep, replace or add, and note whether the layout, walls, plumbing or electrical will change.
  3. Choose a finish level. Identify standard or prefabricated options versus custom work, especially for showers, tile and countertops.
  4. Check local requirements. Ask the building authority about permits and inspections before treating an estimate as a final budget.
  5. Request itemized local quotes. Give qualified local professionals the same scope and ask them to separate labor, materials, plumbing, electrical, permits and any assumptions about existing conditions. Compare like with like.

National estimates cannot account for a specific home’s room size, location, condition or project details. The Houzz figures describe surveyed homeowner spending, while Angi and HomeAdvisor publish cost-guide estimates; none replaces an itemized local quote.

How to interpret broader renovation statistics

In its 2026 U.S. Houzz & Home Study, Houzz Research reported that 54% of U.S. homeowners renovated in 2025 and 37% exceeded their set renovation budget. Those figures concern home renovations overall, not bathrooms specifically, so they provide context rather than a bathroom-cost forecast. In an April 22, 2026 press release about that broader study, Houzz head of economic research Marine Sargsyan said, “Home renovation continues at historic levels, even as homeowners take a more cautious approach to future projects.”
