Choose a mini backhoe by matching the job’s required depth and horizontal working distance to the correct figures on the machine’s working-range chart—not by relying on one maximum number. Check the arm and blade configuration behind those figures, then confirm the machine can reach the work from a practical position and fit the site. Leave room for positioning and bucket approach; a published maximum is not a guarantee that every point in the excavation is reachable in a useful way.

Start with the excavation, not the machine

Before comparing models, describe the work in three dimensions. Measure the required depth from the surface where the machine will sit, the horizontal distance from its practical position to the farthest point to be excavated, and any height or barrier the bucket must clear when placing spoil. These measurements describe different demands; a machine can have enough digging depth but insufficient reach from the position the site allows, or enough reach but not enough depth.

For a trench, consider the full area the machine must dig from each planned setup, not just the nearest or deepest point. If it must reach around an obstacle, work beside a wall, or place spoil beyond a barrier, those constraints affect the useful working envelope. A machine’s headline maximum does not by itself establish that it can complete that layout without repositioning.

  • Required depth: the vertical distance from the machine’s working surface to the bottom of the excavation.
  • Required horizontal distance: how far the farthest digging point is from the machine’s practical working position.
  • Other geometry: whether the bucket must work against a vertical face, reach over an obstruction, or dump spoil at a particular height or distance.

Write down these job dimensions before contacting a dealer or rental provider. Ask them to compare them with the working-range drawing for the exact machine configuration offered. The drawing is more useful than a single number because it shows how depth and reach relate across the bucket’s movement.

Know which reach or depth number you are reading

Manufacturers publish several measurements that can sound interchangeable but describe different parts of the machine’s working envelope. Compare like with like. In particular, maximum reach at ground level is not the same figure as maximum reach, and neither should be substituted for digging depth.

Specification What it describes Why it matters
Maximum digging depth The specified greatest vertical digging depth under the stated machine configuration. Compare it with the required bottom-of-excavation depth, while checking any blade-position or arm assumptions.
Reach at ground level Horizontal reach measured at ground level, as identified in the manufacturer’s specification. Useful when assessing how far the machine can dig horizontally from its position at ground level.
Maximum reach A separate maximum-reach measurement, defined by the manufacturer’s measurement convention. Do not assume it is the same as ground-level reach or that it describes the farthest usable digging point for your task.
Vertical-wall digging depth A separate depth measurement for digging alongside a vertical face. Relevant when the excavation geometry calls for working against a wall; do not substitute ordinary digging depth.
Digging height and dump height Measurements describing how high the machine can dig or discharge material. Check these where the bucket must clear a barrier or place spoil at a particular height.

Specifications do not always present every measurement in the same way. Caterpillar’s 309 CR long-stick specification, for example, lists 4,642 mm digging depth, 7,460 mm maximum reach at ground level, and 7,637 mm maximum reach. Those are three distinct figures, not alternate ways of stating one capacity. Yanmar’s SV26-7 specification likewise distinguishes maximum reach from reach on the ground and gives digging depths for blade-lifted and blade-lowered configurations.

For a job involving a vertical face or spoil placement, locate the corresponding measurement rather than inferring it from digging depth or ground-level reach. If the specification or drawing does not make clear how a figure is measured, ask the supplier to identify the relevant point on the chart. A number without its measurement name and configuration is not enough to make a sound comparison.

Arm and blade configuration can change the working envelope

A standard arm and a long arm can produce different depth and reach figures on the same model. Blade position can also affect a published depth. Record the configuration alongside each number, and compare the whole working range rather than choosing the arm from the maximum depth alone.

Model and configuration Digging depth Reach figure What the published comparison shows
New Holland E30D, standard arm (1.20 m) 2,640 mm maximum digging depth Not stated in the cited product specification Baseline depth figure for the standard arm.
New Holland E30D, long arm (1.40 m) 2,830 mm maximum digging depth Not stated in the cited product specification The long-arm option has a different specified depth; the page identifies the arm lengths.
Yanmar SV26-7, standard arm 2,590 mm blade-up digging depth 4,470 mm reach on the ground Depth and ground reach are specified together for this arm configuration.
Yanmar SV26-7, long arm 2,835 mm blade-up digging depth 4,720 mm reach on the ground The long-arm configuration has different published depth and ground-reach figures.

The New Holland E30D figures above are maximum digging depths. The cited specification gives the arm lengths but does not state corresponding reach values, so those values should be obtained from the working-range chart rather than estimated. Yanmar’s figures are specifically blade-up depths; do not compare them as if they were blade-down measurements. The SV26-7 lists separate blade-up and blade-down depths, so confirm which one applies to the comparison you are making.

A longer arm is not automatically the right choice just because its listed digging depth is greater. Your farthest required point, work position, and the rest of the working envelope matter too. The manufacturer figures establish that configurations differ; they do not establish that one arm is best for every task, operator, or soil condition.

Check access, transport, and working position together

A machine that has suitable reach and depth still has to get to the excavation and sit where it can work. Screen transport dimensions and weight as part of the initial comparison, then consider the machine’s working stance at the site. The transport configuration may also differ from the configuration used to excavate, so ask what dimensions apply in each case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For scale, SANY lists the SY26U at 6,085 lb operating weight and 5 ft 1 in transport width, alongside a 9 ft 3 in maximum digging depth and 15 ft 11 in ground-level reach. These are model specifications, not general recommendations about what width or weight a particular route or site can support. Confirm access and ground suitability for the actual conditions with qualified local advice.

Takeuchi’s TB219 brochure gives a maximum digging depth of 2,520 mm and ground reach of 4,175 mm. It also describes a variable track width: the tracks narrow to 980 mm (1,030 mm for the cab version) and widen to 1,370 mm for greater stability while excavating. That example shows why a narrow access dimension should not be considered separately from the machine’s intended working stance. It does not establish that a particular surface is safe for any machine.

Compare suitable configurations using a job-specific checklist

Once you have the job dimensions and the right chart, compare candidate machines against the same requirements. A simple checklist helps prevent a strong depth figure from hiding a shortfall elsewhere in the layout.

  1. Match depth to depth. Compare the required depth with the manufacturer’s digging-depth figure for the exact arm and blade position. Keep vertical-wall depth separate if the job requires it.
  2. Match distance to distance. Compare the farthest required digging point with the appropriate reach figure. Keep maximum reach and reach at ground level in separate columns.
  3. Review the working-range drawing. Verify that the machine can reach the relevant depth and distance together from a workable position, rather than treating two independent maximum figures as if they necessarily occur at the same point.
  4. Screen access and setup. Compare transport width, operating weight, and the space available to position the machine. Confirm what track or blade configuration the cited dimensions assume.
  5. Check the work tool. If the task needs a particular bucket or other attachment, ask whether it is compatible with the machine and coupler offered. Do not assume that a generic bucket listing fits every compact excavator.
  6. Confirm the exact offered machine. Have the dealer or rental provider identify the model year, arm, blade position, bucket and coupler setup, and working-range drawing for the specific configuration.

New Holland says the E30D is available with factory-installed couplers, buckets, and thumbs. Treat that as a reason to confirm the attachment package and compatibility for the offered machine—not as evidence that any bucket or coupler will suit every configuration. Attachment choice should follow the task and the machine’s confirmed compatibility.

Use published figures as screening specifications, not a job guarantee

Manufacturer specifications are useful for narrowing the field, but they describe model configurations, not guaranteed results in every excavation. A maximum is a limit in a specified measurement convention. Whether a machine can perform the planned work from the actual site position depends on the full working range and site layout.

The examples here span different models, manufacturers, units, and specification formats. They are not a market-wide average, and they do not establish that one machine is superior for a particular job. The cited manufacturer material supplies product specifications and promotional statements; it does not provide independent evidence of performance under every soil, operator, or site condition. Use the figures to identify configurations worth checking, then verify the exact chart and offered setup with the supplier.

Availability is also a separate question from capability. A product page or specification does not establish local inventory or rental availability. Ask the dealer or rental provider what machine and configuration can actually be supplied, and make sure the working-range information refers to that unit.

Questions to resolve before booking or buying

  • Is the quoted depth blade-up or blade-down, and is it for the standard or long arm?
  • Does the quoted horizontal figure mean maximum reach or reach at ground level?
  • Can the working-range chart show the required depth and farthest digging point from the intended machine position?
  • What transport width and operating weight apply to the exact machine being offered?
  • Which bucket, coupler, or other attachment is included, and is it compatible with the machine?
  • Does the offered configuration match the model year and drawing used to provide the figures?

Resolving these details turns a headline specification into a useful selection check. If the supplier cannot identify the configuration behind a figure, do not treat it as a verified match for the job.
