How Microgrids Work: Solar, Batteries, Generators, and Grid Controls

A microgrid is a coordinated local electrical system that can serve defined loads while connected to the utility and can deliberately disconnect to operate as an island. It is not simply solar panels beside a battery or a standby generator. Its boundary, switchgear, protection, communications and control logic must keep generation and demand balanced, isolate the site safely, and reconnect without damaging equipment or endangering utility workers.

For a construction project, that means designing an electrical system around critical loads, operating duration, available generation and fuel, and a tested sequence for an outage. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines a microgrid as “a group of interconnected loads and local energy resources within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid.” DOE’s Microgrid Systems overview explains the same two operating states: grid-connected and islanded.

What a microgrid is—and what it is not

The electrical boundary is the starting point. Inside it are selected buildings, feeders, equipment and local energy resources. At the boundary, a microgrid can exchange power with the utility, monitor conditions and open a service disconnect when island operation is required. A controller then treats the bounded system as one dispatchable entity rather than as unrelated devices.

Microgrid versus a collection of equipment

A rooftop photovoltaic (PV) array, a battery and a generator can all be installed at one site without forming a microgrid. They become a microgrid only when engineered controls coordinate them with defined loads, protection and an intentional method of separating from and reconnecting to the utility. The system must maintain real-power and reactive-power balance during islanded operation and decide how resources are dispatched over longer periods. The National Laboratory of the Rockies describes these functions in its Microgrid Controls resource.

The boundary can encompass a single building, a campus, a manufacturing process, a water facility, a military installation or a remote community. The mix of resources is not prescribed: solar, batteries, reciprocating engines, fuel cells, controllable loads and other distributed energy resources can be combined according to the site’s duty and constraints.

The parts of a working microgrid

Solar photovoltaic generation

PV produces electricity when sunlight is available and can reduce the amount of generator fuel or utility energy needed. In a conventional grid-tied installation, however, the inverter detects loss of utility voltage and frequency and shuts down. This anti-islanding behavior prevents an array from energizing lines that utility crews believe are de-energized. DOE explains this protection in Solar Integration: Distributed Energy Resources and Microgrids Basics.

PV can continue serving loads during an outage only if the microgrid has equipment that establishes a stable local grid and provides the voltage and frequency conditions the inverter requires. Depending on the architecture, a grid-forming battery inverter or a generator may establish that reference. The PV inverter then synchronizes to the local island under the site’s approved control and protection scheme.

Batteries and power-conversion equipment

A battery stores energy for later use and can respond quickly when load changes or solar output moves behind a cloud. Its power rating (how much it can deliver at once) and energy rating (how long it can deliver that power) are separate design values. A battery can cover short peaks, smooth generator loading, or carry critical loads while a generator starts.

Storage does not automatically make a site islandable. The project also needs compatible inverters, controls, protection settings, communications and a safe isolation point. Some generators need an external battery for starting; DOE identifies that starting source as part of black-start planning. DOE’s DER and microgrid guidance also notes that distributed energy resources can help initiate restoration.

Generators

Generators supply dispatchable power when sunlight or stored energy is insufficient. In the DOE military-base example, a prime-power generator energizes a substation and follows the changing load. Properly equipped backup generators can run in parallel and share load. Fuel type, tank capacity, emissions requirements, maintenance access and noise limits affect how long a site can sustain service.

Loads and load controls

Loads include buildings, pumps, communications systems, refrigeration, process equipment and life-safety systems. The design should identify which loads are critical, which are deferrable and which can be disconnected. Feeder breakers may isolate entire areas; automated load-shedding logic can drop lower-priority equipment when fuel, battery state of charge or available generation falls below a limit. Controllable loads can also shift to periods when solar output is high or the generator is lightly loaded.

Controls, switchgear and protection

Switchgear provides the physical connection and isolation points. Protective relays detect faults, abnormal voltage and frequency, and unwanted current flow. The microgrid controller gathers measurements, starts or stops resources, commands breakers, manages state of charge and enforces the load-priority plan. Communications links and local fallback logic are important because a controller must still leave the system in a safe state if a network connection fails.

How a microgrid operates while connected to the utility

In grid-connected mode, the utility normally sets the site’s voltage and frequency reference. The microgrid may import power, export surplus generation where interconnection rules allow, charge its battery, or dispatch a generator for resilience, demand management or other approved services. The controller watches the point of common coupling—the electrical connection to the utility—and coordinates local resources without violating protection or interconnection limits.

Normal operation is also when the project proves that it can respond to abnormal conditions. Engineers verify relay settings, breaker timing, inverter behavior, generator controls, communications and the sequence for opening and closing the intertie. Utility approval and site commissioning are part of the electrical design, not paperwork added after installation.

What happens when the grid goes down?

An outage does not mean every local device keeps running. The system follows an engineered transition sequence. The exact order varies by architecture, but DOE’s military-base case illustrates the major actions.

  1. Detect the utility failure. The controller and protective relays identify loss or unacceptable quality at the utility connection.
  2. Stop grid-following PV as required. The solar array shuts down when it no longer senses a safe utility grid. This prevents unintended energization.
  3. Open the main service disconnect. The intertie opens so islanded power cannot backfeed utility lines.
  4. Separate feeders as planned. Breakers can isolate portions of the site and remove noncritical demand before generation is committed.
  5. Start available generators or storage. Backup generators start where provided. A battery may supply ride-through power or the starting energy needed for a generator.
  6. Establish the local electrical reference. A designated grid-forming inverter or prime-power generator energizes the microgrid bus or substation.
  7. Restore priority loads. Critical feeders are re-energized in a controlled order. Solar can restart when it detects the newly established local grid and its interconnection controls permit operation.
  8. Balance supply and demand. The controller dispatches generators, battery power and PV, while shedding or restoring loads according to priority and available capacity.

DOE documents this type of outage and restoration sequence in Islanding a Microgrid (October 15, 2021). It is an example, not a universal recipe: protection zones, resources, breaker arrangements and operating procedures differ from site to site.

Why solar usually goes off first

Most ordinary PV inverters are grid-following devices. They need an acceptable voltage and frequency reference and shut down when that reference disappears. In an islanded microgrid, another device must create and regulate that reference. Once the local grid is stable and the control system authorizes reconnection, PV can contribute again.

How the system preserves service

If generation cannot support every connected load, the controller protects the highest priorities first. It may open a feeder to a nonessential building, cycle a large pump, delay battery charging or limit discretionary process equipment. When additional generation starts or solar production rises, those loads can be restored in stages.

Islanding, reconnection and black start

Intentional islanding

Islanding means the microgrid has separated from the utility and is operating independently. The controller must keep voltage, frequency, real power and reactive power within the limits required by connected equipment. Protection must also detect faults inside the island and clear them without exposing the utility to an energized circuit.

Unplanned or uncontrolled islanding is hazardous. An improperly connected generator or inverter can energize utility conductors, damage equipment or put workers at risk. DOE discusses these dangers in its microgrid and DER safety guidance. A portable generator, rooftop PV system or household battery must never be connected to utility wiring without designed transfer equipment, isolation and code-compliant protection.

Reconnecting to the utility

Before closing the intertie, the microgrid controller verifies that the utility is available and that the local island is synchronized in voltage, frequency, phase and sequence. Loads and generators may be ramped to avoid a sudden power step. After the breaker closes, controls return resources to the approved grid-connected dispatch. The utility and the project’s electrical engineer define the tests and permissions required for this operation.

Black start

Black start is the ability to restart generation after a widespread loss of power without relying on an energized utility source. It is not automatic for every microgrid. The design must provide starting energy, a sequence for energizing buses and auxiliaries, controls that can operate without normal communications, and a restoration plan. An external battery may start a generator; a distributed energy resource may establish a local bus and help start larger machines. Whether a particular site can black start depends on its equipment and procedures.

A practical planning and commissioning sequence

1. Define the electrical boundary

Map the service entrance, substations, feeders, transfer points and proposed critical-load panels. Identify ownership and operating responsibility at every interface. A clear one-line diagram should show the utility point of common coupling, local resources, breaker positions and protection zones.

  • Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete
  • Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access
  • Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking

2. Classify and measure loads

Separate life-safety, mission-critical, priority and discretionary loads. Record starting currents, motor loads, harmonic-producing equipment, daily profiles and seasonal peaks. Verify which loads can tolerate a brief interruption during transfer and which require uninterrupted power conditioning.

3. Select complementary resources

Match resource characteristics to the duty. PV lowers fuel use when sunlight is available; batteries respond rapidly and can bridge starts; generators provide sustained dispatchable output; controllable loads reduce the required generation capacity. Size both power and energy, and document fuel assumptions rather than treating a single runtime number as universal.

4. Engineer controls and protection together

Specify grid-following and grid-forming behavior, island detection, breaker interlocking, relay coordination, synchronization checks, communications fail-safe states and manual override procedures. The controller’s dispatch logic must reflect the load-priority plan and the limits of every inverter, generator and feeder.

5. Obtain approvals and build for maintainability

Coordinate utility interconnection, electrical permits, fire protection, fuel storage, emissions, noise, access and emergency procedures before procurement. Provide test points, bypasses, spare communications paths and safe working clearances. A microgrid that cannot be inspected, serviced or refueled will not deliver its planned resilience.

6. Test every operating mode

Commissioning should cover normal parallel operation, utility loss, island formation, generator start, battery ride-through, PV restart, load shedding, feeder faults, communications failure and reconnection. Record actual breaker timing, voltage and frequency response, relay operation and restoration sequence. Train operators and repeat the tests after major equipment or control changes.

Costs, constraints and realistic expectations

Microgrids require more than generation equipment. Upfront costs include engineering, switchgear, protection, controls, communications, civil work, interconnection studies, permitting, commissioning and operator training. Ongoing costs include fuel, maintenance, battery replacement planning, software support and periodic testing. The appropriate design depends on the site; the available sources do not establish a universal price, payback period or outage duration.

Regulatory and technical barriers can include utility interconnection limits, export restrictions, emissions permits, fire-code requirements for batteries, fuel logistics, space, noise and the need to coordinate multiple vendors. Resilience benefits are therefore design- and site-dependent. A microgrid can preserve critical operations during an outage, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service if its protected loads exceed available capacity, fuel is unavailable, equipment fails or the restoration sequence was never tested.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling any solar-plus-battery installation a microgrid. Without a defined boundary, coordinated controls and safe islanding, it is only a collection of devices.
  • Assuming grid-tied solar will run during an outage. Standard inverters shut down when the utility reference disappears.
  • Buying a battery without checking power, energy and starting roles. A large energy capacity does not guarantee enough instantaneous power or black-start capability.
  • Ignoring noncritical loads. If every load remains connected, the system may overload or exhaust fuel before priority services are secure.
  • Treating transfer as a simple breaker operation. Isolation, relay coordination, synchronization and utility approval are engineered electrical functions.
  • Skipping full-sequence testing. A design that works on paper may fail when a generator starts slowly, a communications link drops or a feeder has unexpected inrush.
