In Hackster.io’s account of a video demonstration, the machine outperformed professional card thrower Rick Smith Jr. in most tests, while Smith was more accurate. The article provides no scores or test method, so those results are a qualitative report, not a measured performance comparison.
How does Mark Rober’s card-throwing machine work?
The handheld, battery-powered build uses one mechanism to feed a card and another to launch it. A motorized wheel pushes a playing card into a chute; a separate wheel, driven by a brushless DC motor, propels the card outward. The frame is made from C-channel aluminum. The article also describes a rifle-style foregrip and retractable bipod legs.
That is the level of detail established by Cameron Coward’s Hackster.io article. It does not provide exact motor or battery models, dimensions, a full parts list, or instructions for reproducing the build.
Did the machine throw cards better than Rick Smith Jr.?
Hackster’s account says the machine did better in most tests against Smith, a professional magician and card thrower, but Smith had the edge in accuracy. That suggests two different performance strengths in the demonstration: the machine’s reported advantage in most tests and Smith’s ability to aim cards accurately.
