Large-yacht marinas manage shore power, fuel and wastewater through berth infrastructure and services arranged around each vessel’s specifications. The key is to confirm compatibility and capacity before arrival: electrical supply must match the yacht, fuel delivery must fit the berth and operation, and each wastewater stream must go to an accepted reception service or be handled under applicable discharge rules.
What a marina needs to coordinate
These services are related operationally but are not one package guaranteed at every berth. A marina may have high-capacity electrical outlets, a separate fuel quay, and fixed or mobile pump-out. Availability depends on the facility, the berth, the yacht’s dimensions and equipment, and the timing of the visit.

Planning is shared work. The marina confirms the services and constraints at its facility; the vessel’s operator or electrical officer supplies the yacht’s technical requirements and arranges onboard readiness. Before booking, compare the berth’s actual capabilities with the vessel’s needs rather than relying on general descriptions of a marina as suitable for large yachts.

It helps to treat the three services as separate questions. Shore power is an electrical compatibility and load question. Fuel is a supply and transfer arrangement that may involve a dedicated berth or a separately organized bunkering service. Wastewater is a question of which streams the marina receives, how pump-out is requested, and what discharge rules apply to the vessel and port. A facility’s capacity in one area does not establish its capacity in the others.

How shore power is supplied and connected
Marinas distribute electricity through shore-side infrastructure to outlets or power centers at berths. Large yachts may need substantially more capacity than a standard recreational berth, using high-current connections or other shore-side arrangements. Shore-side electricity systems also involve planning, infrastructure, responsibilities, controls and operating procedures; the European Maritime Safety Agency’s guidance addresses these considerations for port authorities and administrations (EMSA shore-side electricity guidance).
Check electrical compatibility before connecting
A high amp rating alone does not establish compatibility. The yacht and berth need to match on the electrical characteristics and connection details, and the berth must support the yacht’s expected load. Have the vessel’s electrical officer and marina confirm:
- Voltage, phase and frequency.
- Available current and the yacht’s expected electrical load.
- Connector type and cable requirements.
- Which berth or power center is assigned, and whether its supply will be available for the planned stay.
Do this before arrival or connection. A published maximum describes a facility’s stated capability; it does not prove that a compatible supply is available at a particular berth on a particular date. Likewise, two figures expressed in different units—such as amps and kilowatts—should not be treated as directly interchangeable without checking the supply details. The relevant comparison is the actual electrical service offered at the assigned berth against the yacht’s requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe vessel’s operator should provide the marina with the yacht’s electrical specifications early enough for the facility to confirm an appropriate berth. If a yacht requires a particular connector, cable setup or load, do not assume an adapter or different berth arrangement will solve the mismatch. Confirm the required connection method with the marina and the vessel’s electrical officer before connecting.
What US vessel rules say about shore-power connections
As a jurisdiction-specific example, 46 CFR § 183.390 applies to covered vessels whose electrical system operates above 50 volts and that have a means of connecting to shore power. The rule specifies a permanently installed shore-power connection box or receptacle, a permanently installed cable connecting it to the switchboard or distribution panel, a circuit breaker, and interlocking that prevents shore power and vessel power sources from operating simultaneously. Its scope is defined by the regulation; it should not be treated as a universal yacht requirement (46 CFR § 183.390).
For ships receiving high-voltage shore power above 1,000 volts, the cited US rule points to IEC/IEEE 80005-1:2019. Owners and operators should check the current applicable regulation and incorporated standard for the vessel and port rather than assume that a low-voltage berth connection or a general marina rating covers a high-voltage installation (46 CFR § 183.425).

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
These examples concern vessel equipment and regulatory scope; they are not a statement that every marina supplies every voltage or that every yacht falls under those provisions. The marina can confirm shore-side availability, while the vessel’s operator is responsible for confirming the yacht’s requirements and applicable rules.
How fuel is arranged
A large yacht may refuel at a dedicated fuel berth or receive bunkering arranged through the marina or a supplier. Those are different service arrangements, and neither should be assumed from the marina’s size or the yacht’s eligibility to berth there. California Coastal Commission marina measures recommend designing fueling stations to reduce spill risk and make cleanup easier (California marina measures).
Ask the operator or fuel supplier to confirm the details for the intended visit:
- Whether the required fuel grade is available, and in what quantity or at what times.
- Whether fueling takes place at a fuel berth or by an arranged delivery method.
- Vessel length, draught and berth limits for the fueling location.
- Booking requirements, operating hours and any applicable local documentation or customs requirements.
- How spill prevention and cleanup are handled during the transfer.
Fuel logistics may need to be confirmed independently of the yacht’s berth booking. A marina may publish that it offers bunkering but still require an arrangement with the operator or supplier, or restrict a fueling location by vessel length or draught. Ask specifically whether the desired grade is on offer for the planned visit, how delivery is made, and what scheduling or documentation applies.
There is no single fuel-transfer rate or universal bunkering procedure established for all ports. The actual method and operating requirements must come from the facility, supplier and applicable local rules. Do not assume that a neighboring marina’s fueling process, transfer rate or paperwork requirements apply elsewhere.

Vessels commonly retain sewage onboard and transfer it to shore through a fixed or mobile pump-out service. The US Environmental Protection Agency describes a Type III marine sanitation device as a holding tank and says holding tanks must be pumped at an appropriate onshore or mobile facility (EPA sewage FAQ).

“Wastewater” is not a single interchangeable stream. Black water, gray water, bilge water and other wastes can have different collection and handling requirements. A marina advertising pump-out may accept only particular streams or may offer different arrangements for each. Confirm what it receives, whether service is fixed or mobile, how to request it, and where reception is available. California’s marina measures say pump-out facilities should be kept in operating condition and their use encouraged (California marina measures).
Be precise when asking for service: a marina that offers sewage pump-out has not necessarily said it accepts gray water or bilge water. Conversely, an operator may list separate dockside reception for multiple streams. Ask for the accepted waste types and the handling route for each rather than using “wastewater” as a catch-all. Also confirm whether the service is available at the berth, at a reception point, or by a mobile unit, and how to arrange access.
The vessel’s crew should plan holding-tank capacity and pump-out timing around the service the marina actually offers. The facility’s published description is a starting point, not proof that the service is operating or available at the desired time. Verify current availability directly and do not treat used oil or other wastes as equivalent to sewage, gray water or bilge water.
Wastewater discharge rules depend on location
There is no worldwide sewage-discharge rule that can be inferred from a marina’s pump-out offering. In the United States, Clean Water Act Section 312 is the principal federal framework for vessel sewage; EPA regulates marine sanitation devices and establishes no-discharge zones. EPA states that raw or insufficiently treated sewage discharge within three miles from shore is illegal and that discharge is prohibited in applicable no-discharge zones. Within three miles, the described framework is treatment by an approved Type I or Type II device or retention in a Type III holding tank, subject to applicable local restrictions and vessel coverage (EPA vessel sewage discharges; EPA sewage FAQ).
For that US context, EPA gives this Clean Water Act definition of sewage: “human body wastes and the waste from toilets and other receptacles intended to receive or retain body wastes” (EPA vessel sewage discharges). It is a definition of sewage, not a rule that makes gray water, bilge water or other wastes equivalent to sewage. For an actual voyage or port call, consult current federal, state and local guidance for the jurisdiction and vessel.
These US examples should not be generalized to another country or treated as a complete answer for every vessel operating in the United States. Rules may depend on the jurisdiction, the vessel and the circumstances. Confirm requirements for the port and voyage with the relevant authorities, and keep discharge compliance separate from the question of what the marina can receive at the dock.

| Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi | Visitor berths for yachts up to 175 m; shore power facilities up to 1,000 amps; onsite bunkering for larger yachts; black- and gray-water pump-out. |
| Marina Genova | Electricity up to 320 kW and sockets up to 1,200 A; a 150 m fuel quay with five high-powered pumps; dockside pump-out for gray, black and bilge water. |
| Port Ghalib | Published shore-power options, fuel bunkering, sewage reception points on berths, and a fuel quay for yachts up to 51 m. |
These specifications are starting points for a direct inquiry, not a promise that a service is available at a particular berth or date. Ask the operator to confirm the current service details and that they suit the yacht’s length, beam, draught, electrical connection and waste streams.
The examples also show why it is useful to compare services individually. Yas Marina publishes a visitor-berth length and shore-power figure alongside bunkering and black- and gray-water pump-out. Marina Genova lists electrical capacity, fuel-quay details and several pump-out streams. Port Ghalib publishes shore-power options, bunkering and sewage reception, as well as a length limit for its fuel quay. These published details are facility-specific; they do not create an industry standard or guarantee that the listed services are available together for one vessel.
How to compare marinas before booking
Compare the assigned berth, not just the marina’s headline claims. For electricity, match the berth’s supply and connection against the yacht’s voltage, phase, frequency, current, connector and expected load. For physical access, verify vessel length, beam and draught limits, including any separate limit for a fuel quay. For fuel, establish the grade and whether it is supplied at a dedicated berth or through arranged bunkering. For waste, list each stream the vessel may need to discharge and check whether the marina receives it and how service is accessed.
Finally, check local sewage rules and the facility’s booking and access procedures. A maximum rating is a useful screening figure, but compatibility and service availability require direct confirmation. If the marina cannot confirm a required connection, fuel arrangement or pump-out stream, plan around that gap before arrival rather than assuming the service will be available.
A practical pre-arrival checklist
- Send the yacht’s requirements. Provide dimensions, draught, expected electrical load, voltage, phase, frequency, current and connector details to the marina before confirming a berth.
- Get a berth-specific electrical confirmation. Ask which berth or power center will be assigned and whether the supply and connection match the vessel’s requirements. Coordinate connection through the vessel’s electrical officer.
- Arrange fuel separately. Confirm fuel grade, availability, transfer location or method, booking, operating hours, vessel limits and any local paperwork with the marina or supplier.
- Identify each waste stream. Ask whether black water, gray water and bilge water are accepted, whether service is fixed or mobile, and how to book or access pump-out.
- Check discharge rules for the port and voyage. Verify current requirements with the competent local authority; do not assume another jurisdiction’s rules apply.
- Reconfirm close to arrival. Check that the assigned berth, fuel service and requested pump-out arrangements remain available for the planned dates. Published service descriptions are not confirmation of current berth-specific availability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every large-yacht berth have shore power?
No. Shore power depends on the marina’s infrastructure and the assigned berth. Confirm availability and match voltage, phase, frequency, current, connector type, cable requirements and expected yacht load before arrival.

Can a marina’s published amp rating tell me whether the berth will work for my yacht?
Not by itself. An amp figure does not establish compatibility or confirm that capacity is available at a particular berth on a particular date. Ask the marina and the vessel’s electrical officer to compare the berth’s actual supply with the yacht’s specifications.
How does a large yacht usually obtain fuel at a marina?
It may refuel at a dedicated fuel berth or receive bunkering arranged through the marina or supplier. Confirm fuel grade, availability, delivery method, vessel limits, booking, hours, documentation and spill-prevention arrangements directly with the operator.
Does pump-out cover gray water and bilge water as well as sewage?
Not necessarily. Accepted streams vary by marina. Ask specifically whether black water, gray water and bilge water are accepted, whether service is fixed or mobile, and how to request it.

Are US sewage-discharge rules the same worldwide?
No. EPA’s Clean Water Act guidance is a US example, not a global rule. Check current requirements for the port, voyage and vessel with the relevant local authorities.
The Bottom Line
For a large-yacht port call, confirm each service separately: berth-specific electrical compatibility, the fuel supply and transfer arrangement, and reception for each wastewater stream. Check vessel dimensions and local discharge requirements, then reconfirm availability with the marina or supplier. Published capacities help narrow the search, but only the operator can confirm what is suitable and available for the planned visit.
