How Long Should Concrete Cure Before Construction Continues?

Concrete is ready for the next operation when it meets that operation’s approved in-place strength requirement—not simply when a certain number of days has passed.

There is no universal number of days to wait. Construction can continue when the concrete has reached the strength required for the specific next operation and its loads, based on the project documents and approved evidence. For structural work, the licensed design professional or engineer of record should establish or approve both the strength criterion and how it will be verified. A 7- or 28-day age alone does not prove that concrete is ready to carry a particular construction load.

What “cure” means—and why elapsed time is not enough

Curing is not simply leaving concrete untouched for a set number of days. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) defines it as maintaining moisture and temperature conditions in freshly placed cementitious material so cement hydration and, where applicable, pozzolanic reactions can develop the mixture’s potential properties. The conditions during those days matter as much as the calendar.

ACI explains that strength-related reactions need sufficient moisture to keep internal relative humidity above 80% and a favorable temperature exceeding 10°C (50°F). These are explanatory conditions for ongoing reactions, not a release threshold for construction. A concrete member might have spent a particular number of days in place without developing the strength needed for the next operation if its mixture or exposure conditions were unfavorable.

Strength development depends on the concrete mixture and its temperature and moisture history. Concrete may continue to gain strength for a long period when conditions remain favorable, but the amount of further gain depends on factors including the water-cementitious materials ratio, member size, and exposure to drying. If concrete dries, hydration-related strength gain cannot continue indefinitely. ACI notes that retaining moisture may be enough for mixtures with a water-cement ratio above 0.4, while mixtures below 0.4 may need water supplied during curing; that distinction is not a stand-alone instruction for choosing a curing method. Follow the mix requirements and project specification.

The practical question is therefore not “How many days has it been?” but “What strength does this operation require, and what approved evidence shows the concrete has reached it?”

Readiness depends on the next operation

Different work creates different demands on early-age concrete. The strength needed before a crew performs one operation may not be adequate for another, and the effect of a construction load depends on the member and its support conditions. Identify the exact next operation before deciding whether work can proceed.

  • Applying construction loads: Account for the actual loads and where they will be placed. Do not treat a generic age as permission to store materials or load a structural member.
  • Removing forms or shores: Removal changes how the member is supported and can affect the loads it must carry. ACI’s cold-weather guidance says the licensed design professional should specify the in-place strength required for removing forms and shores.
  • Stressing tendons: Tendon stressing is a distinct operation with a strength requirement that must come from the project’s design and specifications; a general curing calendar does not establish readiness.
  • Placing additional concrete: Consider the construction loads and support arrangement associated with the placement, not just the age of the concrete below it.

For structural work, get the required strength and release method from the project specifications and the responsible licensed design professional. If those documents do not make the criterion clear, resolve the question with the design team before proceeding. Cold-weather protection, reshoring, and the sequence of support removal warrant particular care.

Why 75% is not a general form-removal rule

In a July 2025 Concrete International Q&A, ACI discussed a particular slab-formwork case that used a requirement of 75% of specified compressive strength. The point was to prevent construction loading from exceeding the concrete’s early-age load capacity, with coordination between the design team and formwork engineer. That percentage belongs to the case described; it is not a universal threshold for slabs, walls, foundations, form removal, or construction in general.

How to establish in-place strength

For a critical operation, use evidence suited to the member, the concrete mixture, and the project’s acceptance requirements. ACI describes field-cured cylinders and other procedures approved by the licensed design professional as ways to estimate in-place strength. Its 2026 Q&A also discusses maturity-index measurements, penetration resistance, pullout strength, cast-in-place cylinders, and temperature-matched curing. The appropriate choice is project-specific, and any method that relies on correlation needs adequate mixture-specific support.

Method What it can contribute What to confirm
Field-cured specimens Strength-test evidence from specimens kept under field conditions. Whether the project accepts the procedure and whether specimen conditions reasonably represent the question being assessed.
Maturity index Uses the concrete’s time-temperature history to estimate strength when related to test results for the same mixture. A suitable mixture-specific relationship must be developed and validated. Temperature readings alone do not establish strength, and moisture must be adequate for the estimate to be useful.
Penetration resistance or pullout strength Alternative test approaches discussed by ACI for assessing strength. Use an appropriately supported method and obtain project approval where required; do not assume a result transfers across mixtures or projects.
Cast-in-place cylinders or temperature-matched curing Additional approaches discussed by ACI for obtaining strength evidence tied to field conditions. Confirm the procedure, interpretation, and acceptance criteria with the project team.

The table is not a ranking. A test can be quick or technically sophisticated and still be unsuitable if it is not correlated to the placed mixture, does not represent the member or conditions at issue, or is not accepted by the project. For a decision involving structural loading or support removal, the responsible design professional should approve the evidence and release process.

How the maturity method works

The maturity method relates accumulated time-temperature increments in the field to strength results from cylinders made with the same concrete mixture. Once an appropriate relationship has been established and validated, maturity readings can help estimate strength development. The method does not turn temperature into strength by itself: without the mixture-specific relationship, a temperature record is not proof that concrete has reached a required strength. The estimate also depends on adequate moisture for strength-related reactions to continue.

Keep curing and protection in place when work resumes

Permission to perform one operation does not automatically mean curing is finished. A form may be removable while the specification still requires curing and protection to continue. ACI SPEC-308.1-23, its external-curing specification for cast-in-place concrete, distinguishes initial, final, and termination stages of curing. Follow the project’s stated curing requirements through the specified termination point rather than treating a construction release as an instruction to stop curing.

This distinction matters because construction readiness and curing completion answer different questions. Readiness concerns whether the concrete can safely support the next operation under the approved criteria. Curing concerns maintaining the conditions needed for the concrete to develop its properties. One does not automatically settle the other.

What 3, 7, and 28 days actually tell you

Testing ages are often mistaken for mandatory waiting periods. ACI’s FAQ on strength test results explains that, under the cited ACI 318-19 provisions, specified compressive strength is based on 28-day test results unless the construction documents say otherwise. Three- or seven-day tests are often used to monitor early strength gain, particularly for high-early-strength concrete, and are not commonly used for acceptance. These ages describe testing practice; they do not tell every crew when it may resume work.

For the FAQ’s discussion and its stated ACI 318-19 context, see ACI’s explanation of 7-day and 28-day strength test results. The applicable code edition and requirements depend on the project’s jurisdiction and adopted documents, so check the requirements that govern the work rather than assuming the cited edition applies everywhere.

A practical release check before work resumes

  1. Name the operation. Specify whether the crew plans to load the member, remove forms or shores, stress tendons, place more concrete, or perform another task. “Continue construction” is too broad to define a strength requirement.
  2. Identify the demand and support condition. Determine what loads the operation will introduce and whether the member remains temporarily supported. Include the planned sequence, not just the final condition.
  3. Find the project criterion. Check the drawings, specifications, and approved construction procedures for the required in-place strength and release conditions. For structural work, ask the licensed design professional or engineer of record to establish or approve any unclear requirement.
  4. Gather approved evidence. Use field-cured specimens or another method accepted for the project. For a correlated method such as maturity, confirm that the relationship applies to the actual mixture and that the required validation has been completed.
  5. Obtain the required release. Compare the evidence with the specified criterion and follow the project’s approval process before changing support or applying the construction load.
  6. Continue curing and protection as specified. Keep the required moisture and temperature measures in place until the project’s curing requirements are complete, even if the next operation is allowed to begin.

If the project has no clear criterion, no accepted way to estimate strength, or conflicting direction about loading and support removal, do not substitute a rule of thumb. Resolve the issue with the responsible design professional before the operation proceeds.

Common mistakes that make a day count misleading

  • Assuming 7 days means ready: A seven-day test may monitor strength gain, but it is not a universal construction-release age.
  • Assuming 28 days means every operation is safe: The age associated with specified-strength testing is not, by itself, evidence that a member can carry a particular construction load.
  • Using a percentage from another project: ACI’s 75% slab-formwork example is specific to its case, not a general rule to apply elsewhere.
  • Using temperature alone as proof: Maturity estimates require an established relationship for the same mixture; a temperature log without that relationship does not verify strength.
  • Stopping curing when forms come off: Form removal and termination of curing are separate decisions under project requirements.
  • Ignoring support and weather conditions: The operation’s loads, temporary supports, and temperature history can affect the decision. Cold-weather form and shore removal and reshoring should follow project design and specifications.

Which guidance applies to your project?

The cited material comes from the American Concrete Institute and includes U.S.-oriented provisions and guidance. ACI lists ACI PRC-308-26 as its 2026 curing guide, while ACI SPEC-308.1-23 is its 2023 external-curing specification. These references help explain curing and strength assessment, but the project’s jurisdiction, adopted code edition, specifications, and design instructions control the construction decision. Use the editions and requirements applicable to the work, and have the responsible design professional resolve any conflict.
