There is no single cure time for every coated concrete floor. Use the current label and technical data sheet for the exact coating, then wait for the milestone that matches the planned use: light walking, ordinary foot traffic, heavy loads or furniture, vehicle tires, wheeled equipment, or washing. A floor that feels dry to the touch may still be unsuitable for traffic or cleaning.
Published schedules range from a few hours for specialized systems to 30 days before cleaning some residential coatings. Temperature, relative humidity, coating system, number of coats, and the difference between U.S. and European formulations all matter.

Quick answer: match the wait to the use
Plan from the most restrictive activity you will perform, not from the first moment the surface stops feeling tacky. The comparison below shows why a generic promise such as “ready tomorrow” can damage a floor.

Why “dry” does not mean “ready”
Touch-dry is only an early stage
Touch-dry describes the surface feel during the early drying stage. It does not establish that the coating has developed the resistance needed for shoes, furniture legs, casters, tires, or water. A recoat interval, if listed, answers when another layer may be applied; it is not automatically a return-to-service interval.
Traffic categories have different demands
Light foot traffic usually means occasional walking without dragging loads. Normal or heavy use includes repeated passage, furniture placement, carts, or other concentrated pressure. Vehicle tires add sustained weight, turning forces, and potential heat. Wheeled equipment can impose narrow contact points that are more demanding than ordinary walking. Cleaning adds water, detergent, and mechanical action, so it often has the longest waiting period.
When can people walk on the floor?
Light foot traffic
Use the light-foot-traffic milestone in the product sheet, not the time at which the coating merely looks dry. In the published examples, that milestone is as short as five hours for Concrete Saver 6200 under its stated conditions and six hours for the Resuflor Deco Quartz system. Other products specify 12–16, 16, or 24 hours. Those differences reflect the coating system and environment, not a contradiction in the concept of curing.

Wait for the separate normal- or heavy-use instruction before moving furniture back or allowing regular household traffic. Furniture can create a continuous load at small feet or casters even when people walking across the room would be acceptable. Lift items rather than dragging them once the manufacturer permits placement, and use the product’s stated heavy-use milestone as the controlling date.
When can a vehicle be parked on it?
Do not park as soon as the floor can be walked on. Vehicle traffic is commonly assigned a later milestone, often seven days in the residential examples. The older U.S. EPOXYShield instruction sheet states, “FOR FULL CURE AND VEHICLE TRAFFIC, ALLOW 7 DAYS.” The European EPOXYSHIELD sheet also specifies seven days at 20°C and 50% relative humidity. These statements are product-specific; a commercial system may publish a different wheeled-traffic interval.

Before bringing a car or powered equipment inside, confirm that the current instructions mention tires or wheeled traffic explicitly. If they do not, ask the coating manufacturer or installer rather than converting a foot-traffic time into a vehicle time.
When can the floor be washed?
Cleaning is a separate release milestone. The BEHR U.S. product page calls for at least 30 days before rinsing or cleaning, while the Concrete Saver 6200 sheet calls for five days before mopping or washing. Other cited timing tables do not state a cleaning interval. Use the exact wording for your product and do not infer a cleaning date from the vehicle or foot-traffic date.

Check the conditions behind the stated time
Temperature
Published times assume a temperature range. Concrete Saver 6200 gives its 48–72-hour full-use schedule at 70–80°F (21–27°C). The EPOXYSHIELD Europe sheet uses 20°C. The older U.S. EPOXYShield instructions warn that cooler temperatures increase drying time. A floor in an unheated garage or basement can therefore remain unsuitable after the nominal number of hours has elapsed.
Relative humidity
Humidity is part of the schedule, not a footnote. Concrete Saver 6200’s full-use figure assumes 50% relative humidity, and the European sheet also specifies 50% relative humidity. BEHR states that higher humidity lengthens drying. If your space is damper than the stated condition, plan additional time and follow any revised limits in the current technical data sheet.

Product, coat, and market
Identify the exact product name, system, market, and number of coats before calculating a release date. U.S. and European products carrying similar names can have different formulations and instructions. A fast-curing industrial system should not be used as a benchmark for a consumer garage coating, and an old instruction sheet should not override current packaging.

Do not confuse concrete curing with coating curing
Fresh concrete must gain sufficient age before any coating is applied. That substrate requirement occurs before the coating’s own clock starts. Concrete Saver 6200’s 2017 U.S. technical data sheet requires new concrete to cure for 30 days before coating. That is a requirement for that product, not a universal rule for every coating or every concrete mix.
For an existing slab, determine whether you are dealing with newly placed concrete, a repair, or an old surface being recoated. Follow the coating manufacturer’s substrate-age, moisture, and preparation requirements first; only then count the post-application cure period.
A practical procedure for setting the return-to-use date
- Record the exact coating. Write down the product name, component or kit number, market, and batch information. Similar names can conceal different systems.
- Open the current label and technical data sheet. Look for separate entries for light foot traffic, normal or heavy traffic, furniture, tires, wheeled traffic, water resistance, and cleaning.
- Match the entry to the planned use. If the room will hold furniture and a vehicle, use the later applicable milestone rather than the earliest walk-on time.
- Check the assumed conditions. Compare the sheet’s temperature and relative-humidity conditions with the actual space. Cooler or more humid conditions require a longer wait when the manufacturer says so.
- Start the clock after the final coat. A multi-coat system may have separate recoat instructions; the final-coat timing governs return to service unless the sheet says otherwise.
- Keep the area protected during the interval. Restrict people, pets, furniture, tires, and water according to the strictest milestone you identified.
- Verify before release. If the surface remains soft, tacky, easily marked, or otherwise outside the product’s stated condition, do not use it. Contact the manufacturer or installer for a product-specific decision instead of guessing.
What happens if the floor is used too soon?
Early traffic can mark or damage a coating before it has reached the resistance specified for that use. BEHR specifically warns that premature heavy traffic can cause paint failure. Tire turning, dragged furniture, concentrated wheel loads, and washing are particularly difficult to reverse once the surface has been damaged.
If people have already walked on it
Stop additional traffic, keep the area dry, and allow the full product-specific interval to elapse under suitable conditions. Inspect for tackiness, imprints, loss of gloss, or visible lifting. Document the product and environmental conditions, then ask the manufacturer or installer whether the affected area can continue curing or requires a repair plan.

If a vehicle or water reached it early
Do not assume that a firm-looking surface is unaffected. Remove the source of traffic or moisture, avoid aggressive cleaning, and seek technical advice using the exact product and application details. Remediation depends on whether the issue is only a surface mark or an adhesion or cure failure; the data sheet and manufacturer should determine the next step.
How to read conflicting dates
When a label, technical data sheet, and installer schedule differ, check their publication dates and the exact product identification. The 2005 U.S. EPOXYShield instruction sheet is useful as a historical product-specific reference, but current packaging should control a present installation. A regional sheet may describe a different formulation from the one sold in your country. If no document clearly covers your intended traffic or cleaning method, obtain written clarification before releasing the floor.
Planning examples
Residential garage
Suppose a coating sheet allows light walking first, heavy use later, vehicle tires after a still later interval, and cleaning last. Schedule the garage so people can enter only at the light-traffic milestone, furniture and storage move in at the heavy-use milestone, the car parks at the tire milestone, and washing waits for the cleaning milestone. The latest date controls the complete project, even if the floor looks finished earlier.
Commercial or industrial area
A specified system such as Resuflor Deco Quartz may publish water resistance, foot traffic, and wheeled-traffic times that are much shorter than residential products. Use those figures only for that system, its application thickness and conditions, and its approved use. Do not transfer the schedule to another epoxy, paint, or garage kit.
Bottom line
Wait for the exact manufacturer milestone that matches the next activity. Dry-to-touch is not a clearance for traffic, vehicle tires, or cleaning. Check temperature and humidity, keep substrate curing separate from coating curing, and use the current product documentation for the precise coating and market. When the instructions are unclear, the safer choice is to delay use and obtain product-specific technical guidance.
