Landscape Forms’ Profile is a coordinated outdoor lighting family for shaping how people read and move through exterior spaces. The family described by Buildings includes area, accent, and column lights, plus performance, wayfinding, and unlit perimeter bollards. Those types let a project address broad open areas, narrow paths, planted beds, entrances, and boundaries with one related visual language rather than a collection of unrelated fixtures.
Profile’s description identifies four height choices and four color-temperature choices for its area, accent, and column lights. It does not publish the actual dimensions, color-temperature values, lumen outputs, optics, controls, installation requirements, pricing, or regional availability. Treat Profile as a family to coordinate during design, then obtain current manufacturer documentation and project-specific calculations before approving a specification.

What Profile is—and what it is not
Profile is a Landscape Forms outdoor lighting family developed in collaboration with Linnaea Tillett and Tillett Lighting Design Associates. The family is presented as a set of related fixture types rather than a single luminaire. Its described components are:

| Unlit perimeter bollards | Physical edge or boundary elements without a light source | Site perimeters and transitions |
The product description says the family “can effectively illuminate a wide array of spaces, from large, open areas and narrow pathways to landscape beds and building entrances.” That is a vendor-attributed statement reproduced by Buildings, published March 30, 2025; it is not an independent photometric test. It supports using Profile as a coordinated design vocabulary, not a guarantee that any particular layout will meet a target illuminance, glare limit, safety requirement, or code.

Match each fixture type to the space you are defining
Large, open areas: start with area lighting
Open plazas, courtyards, forecourts, and other broad spaces usually need a legible field of light rather than isolated bright points. Profile’s area lights are the family element explicitly associated with that condition. During layout, mark the boundaries of the usable area, primary destinations, seating or gathering zones, service access, and any surfaces that must remain clear of poles or foundations. Use those constraints to establish a preliminary fixture grid, then have the final spacing and output confirmed by a qualified lighting designer using current photometric files.
Column lights may also help express the scale of an open area or reinforce an arrival sequence. Do not assume that a column fixture can replace area lighting: the correct choice depends on mounting height, optical distribution, target levels, and local requirements that are not supplied in the product description.
Narrow pathways: distinguish movement from destination lighting
Paths are read as linear routes. Performance and wayfinding bollards are the Profile elements named for this use. A wayfinding layout should make the route, turns, crossings, stairs, and changes in grade easy to identify without placing fixtures where they obstruct the clear walking zone. A performance-bollard layout should be evaluated for the actual walking surface, adjacent planting, drainage, and maintenance access.

The product description does not establish a bollard height, spacing rule, beam pattern, glare rating, or compliance result; those items must come from current technical documents and the project’s lighting calculations.
Landscape beds: use accent lighting selectively
Accent fixtures can establish a visual hierarchy in planting beds by drawing attention to a specimen, texture, tree canopy, sculpture, or a change in grade. Profile’s accent lights are the family type associated with landscape beds. Make the target and viewing direction explicit on the plan, and coordinate aiming with mature plant dimensions rather than only with the planting shown at installation.

Keep serviceability in the design. Provide access for re-aiming, cleaning, and replacing equipment without trampling planted areas. Building entrances: layer arrival cues
Entrances combine movement, identification, and a transition between exterior and interior. The Profile description names area, accent, and column lights in connection with building entrances, so a design team can coordinate general approach lighting with emphasis at doors, signs, canopies, or architectural features. Draw the route from the property edge to the door, identify the point at which visitors should recognize the entrance, and avoid placing a fixture where it competes with signage or creates a direct view of a bright source.
Entrance lighting must be checked against the building’s electrical, accessibility, security, and life-safety requirements. Profile’s family description alone does not establish an entrance illuminance, uniformity ratio, emergency-lighting function, or code approval.
Edges and boundaries: decide whether light is needed
Profile includes unlit perimeter bollards as well as performance and wayfinding bollards. An unlit bollard can mark an edge, protect a planting bed, or reinforce a route without adding another luminous point. Use it where the boundary itself needs to be visible or physically defined, and reserve illuminated bollards for locations where the lighting calculation shows a need. This separation can keep a perimeter legible without assuming that every boundary requires electrical equipment.
A practical workflow for defining an outdoor space with Profile
- Map the site by function. Divide the plan into open areas, paths, landscape beds, entrances, service zones, and perimeters. Record grades, trees, utilities, drainage, walls, canopies, and property lines before placing symbols for fixtures.
- Mark movement and stopping points. Draw accessible routes, stairs, crossings, doors, gathering areas, and destinations. A fixture that works for a stopping point may be poorly placed for a moving route, so keep those functions separate on the plan.
- Assign a Profile type to each condition. Begin with area lights for broad zones, accent lights for selected features, column lights for vertical arrival or organizational cues, performance or wayfinding bollards for routes, and unlit perimeter bollards for non-luminous edges. This is a planning framework, not a performance guarantee.
- Choose among the available heights. The product description states that area, accent, and column lights are offered in four heights. The actual heights are not given, so request the current schedule before drawing foundations, conduit exits, or mounting details. Compare each option against sightlines, tree growth, vandal-resistance concerns, maintenance access, and the scale of nearby architecture.
- Choose a color-temperature strategy. The same three fixture categories are described as available in four color temperatures, but the values are not published in the available material. Obtain the exact Kelvin options and color-rendering information, then decide whether one temperature should run throughout the site or whether a documented transition is appropriate at entrances, planting, and paths.
- Coordinate the visual language. Keep fixture families, mounting logic, and aiming principles consistent where people see multiple zones at once. A single family does not automatically produce a coherent result; alignment, spacing, shielding, and viewing angles still require design decisions.
- Run the technical checks. Ask for current photometric files, dimensions, electrical load, controls compatibility, environmental ratings, mounting details, and maintenance instructions. Use those files in a project-specific calculation that covers average and minimum levels, uniformity, glare, spill light, and any local limits.
- Review a physical or digital mock-up. Test a representative path, entrance, open-area bay, and landscape feature. Confirm that the selected height and color temperature support the intended hierarchy from real viewing positions, including adjacent properties and upper-floor windows.
- Document the approved configuration. Put the exact fixture type, height, color temperature, finish, optics, controls, mounting, circuit, and location on the luminaire schedule. Record substitutions as formal submittals; do not approve a visually similar fixture without checking the calculation and details again.
Using the four heights and four color temperatures responsibly
Four choices in each category create flexibility, but the count alone does not tell a designer which option is right. Height affects where a source is seen, how far light can be distributed, the relationship to pedestrians and planting, and the practical reach of maintenance equipment. Color temperature affects the visual relationship between the fixture, paving, foliage, façade materials, and nearby lighting. Those are design considerations; they are not published Profile performance results.

Request a current matrix that names every height and color-temperature value. Ask whether the four temperatures are available for every optical package and finish, or only for selected configurations. Confirm whether changing height changes the optical distribution, output, mounting hardware, or control options. If the manufacturer has separate photometric files for each combination, use the file that exactly matches the scheduled configuration rather than a representative file.

For a multi-zone site, write the color-temperature decision into the design narrative. A consistent value can help visually connect a campus, while a deliberate change can mark a threshold. Either approach should be checked from the public realm and against neighboring sources; avoid making a claim about comfort, safety, or energy use without project evidence.
What the available description does not establish
The March 30, 2025 product description identifies the family and broad applications, but it does not provide the technical information needed for final specification. Before issuing a construction package or purchase order, verify:
- Actual fixture dimensions, mounting heights, weights, and foundation requirements.
- Lumen output, wattage, efficacy, optical distributions, and photometric files.
- Color-temperature values, color-rendering data, and consistency across fixture types.
- Shielding, glare control, cutoff classification, and spill-light performance.
- Ingress, impact, corrosion, wind, and environmental ratings.
- Control protocols, dimming behavior, photocell or sensor compatibility, and emergency operation.
- Conduit, wiring, grounding, aiming, and installation instructions.
- Finish options, replacement parts, warranty terms, lead times, price, current stock, and geography-specific availability.
- Whether any configuration has been tested or certified for the codes and standards governing your site.
Do not fill those gaps with assumptions based on the fixture name or on another Landscape Forms product. Obtain the current manufacturer submittal and have the project’s architect, electrical engineer, lighting designer, and authority having jurisdiction review the portions that apply to their responsibilities.

During design development
Keep a single fixture schedule tied to the site plan and the lighting calculation. Identify which Profile elements are illuminated and which perimeter bollards are intentionally unlit. Coordinate bases with civil, structural, landscape, and irrigation drawings. If the site includes phased construction, note which circuits and controls are installed in each phase so later additions do not create mismatched color temperatures or incompatible control zones.

During submittals
Require the supplier to submit the exact catalog configuration, not only a family brochure. Compare the submitted height, color temperature, optics, finish, electrical characteristics, and mounting hardware with the approved schedule. Re-run calculations whenever one of those attributes changes. A substitution that appears equivalent in elevation can alter the illuminated area, glare, or maintenance access.
During installation and commissioning
Protect conduit and foundations from conflicts with paving and planting. Set aiming points from the approved plan, then inspect after adjacent construction is complete. Verify controls, schedules, dimming scenes, and photocells under the operating conditions specified by the design team. Record final locations and settings for the owner’s maintenance file.
How to decide whether Profile fits your project
Profile is a logical candidate when a project needs several outdoor-lighting roles—broad-area, feature, vertical, path, and boundary elements—and wants those roles coordinated as one family. The available description supports that use across large open areas, narrow pathways, landscape beds, and building entrances. It does not, by itself, prove that Profile meets a particular light level, energy target, environmental condition, budget, or jurisdictional requirement.
Make the decision with a documented comparison of the actual site requirements and the current Profile submittal. If the required height, color temperature, output, controls, or mounting detail is unavailable for a needed zone, identify that conflict early and evaluate another specified product rather than weakening the design intent. The strongest outcome is a complete, verified schedule in which every illuminated route and destination has a stated purpose, every unlit boundary is intentional, and every technical claim is backed by current manufacturer data.
