Plywood, roofing flashing, C9 lights, salvaged pallets and a modified store-bought prop gave the display its handmade character. Make: documented the project in 2011 and updated the feature in 2015; it is a build account, not a complete set of plans or a tested construction guide.
How was the creepy homemade funhouse made?
Corcoran built the display as several linked scenes rather than a single structure. The centerpiece was a giant clown head designed to look as if it were gobbling people, paired with a glowing funhouse sign. Other yard elements extended the carnival theme with a cotton-candy cauldron, a ticket booth and a clown operating a Jack-in-the-Box.
Make:’s feature on Corcoran’s funhouse, originally published November 3, 2011 and updated October 16, 2015, records the materials and broad methods, but does not provide a complete plan, bill of materials or engineering validation.
What went into the centerpiece sign and clown head?
The 18-by-5-foot sign
The sign measured 18 feet wide by 5 feet tall. Corcoran made its letters by hand from plywood and roofing flashing, then mounted C9 lights inside them. The combination of sheet materials and visible illumination helped establish the carnival look at yard scale.

The oversized face
For the large face sections, Corcoran printed designs on transparency and projected them overhead onto plywood. He traced and cut out the shapes, painted them, and assembled the sections into the giant clown head. The feature describes the process, not dimensioned templates or a cutting plan.
How did the other scenes create a carnival story?
Pallet-built set pieces
Shipping pallets became the framework for a cotton-candy cauldron and a spooky ticket booth. Reused material was part of the construction approach as well as the visual effect; the source does not establish how the pieces were finished for weather exposure or how long they lasted.

The rocking-chair clown
Corcoran modified a store-bought skull prop for the clown’s head, adding ping-pong balls for prominent cheeks and newspaper and paper towels for rough skin texture. A hacked 12V vehicle wiper motor supplied the rocking motion to the chair.
That description is not enough to reproduce the powered prop safely. The feature gives no wiring diagram, detailed mechanism or safety test, so treat the motorized element as a documented design choice rather than a set of instructions.

What can a homeowner borrow for a smaller yard display?
The funhouse materials suit its particular large sign and themed scenes; a separate, smaller cemetery project can use a different approach. In a 2025 San Antonio Express-News guide to homemade Halloween displays, homeowner Michael Lane recommends foam board insulation or project panels for tombstones. The guide describes scoring the panels with a crafting knife or blade, painting them, adding lettering, and supporting them with a wooden dowel or stake.

The sources do not compare cost, durability or weather resistance, so choose materials for the scale and role of the piece and assess outdoor exposure and support needs for your own site. The 2025 guide also describes scrap plywood and reused curbside objects in other home haunts; reuse can contribute to a handmade look, but those examples are not a tested recipe.

Scope affects both the time involved and how visitors move through a display. The 2025 Express-News guide says a few lights and skeletons may take a few hours, while more ambitious home haunts can occupy evenings and weekends. It recommends keeping nighttime routes well lit and pedestrian friendly and securing props.

Permits and occupancy limits depend on location. In the guide’s specific Alamo Heights example, the fire marshal allowed the De La Cruz home attraction only below 120 square feet and with fewer than five occupants at a time. Those figures describe that local attraction; they are not general requirements. Check with your own jurisdiction about permits and occupancy, and do not treat general display suggestions as a substitute for applicable codes or professional review of structures and electrical work.
