How Japan Prepares Trees for Relocation Before Construction

Nemawashi prepares a tree’s roots before relocation, but timelines vary and survival is never assured. Here’s how the process works and what the evidence shows.

When construction threatens an established tree, one alternative to felling it is to prepare its roots well before the move. In Japan, this advance root work is called nemawashi: roots are exposed and pruned in stages, then given time to grow before the tree is lifted and transplanted. It can improve a tree’s chance of coping with relocation, but it is specialized work—not a guarantee, and not proof that centuries-old trees can reliably be saved.

What is nemawashi?

Nemawashi means preparing the roots before a tree is moved. Rather than lifting an established tree with no advance work, a crew exposes or trenches around selected roots, prunes or treats them, and allows new roots to develop before removal. The approach aims to reduce the shock of losing roots during transplanting.

That preparation matters because a tree’s canopy depends on water supplied by its roots. Losing many water-absorbing roots can disrupt that supply. Advance pruning can encourage new fibrous roots closer to the trunk, while careful lifting, transport, planting and aftercare also influence whether the tree recovers.

How the preparation and move work

Prepare roots ahead of construction

Seibu Greenery Management describes exposing major lateral roots, treating them to encourage root formation, wrapping the treated area with sphagnum moss and backfilling. The roots are checked after five months. Depending on the tree’s form and species, the company says one to two years may be needed for root development. This is a contractor’s described method, not a universal timetable.

Prune in stages, then lift

In a study of commercial street-tree moves in Hong Kong, Mathew Pryor described root pruning in three stages: trenches were made on two sides, then the other sides, followed by undercutting and lifting. Crews shaped root balls by hand, wrapped and wired them, then used straps to lift the trees. The sequence illustrates how a move can be planned to preserve a workable root ball; the exact method depends on the tree and site.

Plant and monitor

Moving is only one part of the job. Hokkaido Forestry Research Institute guidance notes that fine roots are easily lost and that retaining as much of the root ball as feasible can help. It recommends early-spring transplanting before buds open, suitable soil drainage and avoiding excessive fertilizer immediately after planting. Those are regional recommendations, not rules that apply unchanged to every species or climate.

  • ERGONOMIC ADVANTAGE - Designed with a UV-resistant D-grip and forward-bent footrests, our shovel for digging gives you a better grip and lets the blade carry more soil with each scoop. With our D handle shovel, digging feels more comfortable and stable

How long does root preparation take?

There is no single standard duration. Seibu Greenery Management says its approach may require one to two years depending on tree form and species, and documents a five-month check for new roots. Pryor’s Hong Kong study reports root-pruning intervals ranging from less than one month to six months. These figures describe different methods and circumstances; they do not establish a universal schedule. The work must be planned around the individual tree and the construction timetable.

Can an ancient tree survive being transplanted?

It may, but the available examples do not establish that centuries-old trees reliably survive relocation. Outcomes vary with species, tree condition, timing, root handling, transport, destination and aftercare. The evidence below shows both why preparation can be useful and why survival claims need careful limits.

A Japanese project shows species differences

Japan’s Greenery Research and Development Center summarizes a 1991 Hachioji New Town project that relocated 1,122 root stocks. Reported establishment rates differed substantially: mountain azalea, 84%; Japanese snowbell, 64%; konara oak, 62%; chestnut, 58%; Japanese mountain cherry, 55%; and shide-type trees, 11%. The project also found a tendency toward lower establishment in larger trunk-diameter groups, and April was the highest-listed planting month. These results concern root-stock transplanting, not intact ancient trees.

Mature street trees offer relevant but limited evidence

Pryor’s 2016 conference paper examined 535 mature street trees across nine species, moved commercially in Hong Kong during 2010–2011. The trees ranged from 3 to 14 metres tall. After monitoring, about 77% were reported to have recovered fully, while 125 died or showed clear terminal decline. Fewer than 2% had no immediate sign of transplant shock—a different measure from full recovery. The study observed real-world commercial work rather than randomly assigned treatments, and its authors noted that species, season, operation details, transport damage and aftercare affected outcomes. It did not study centuries-old Japanese trees.

Sapling results cannot predict ancient-tree outcomes

A 2016 experiment summarized by Hindustan Times on October 6, 2026 tested abrupt root loss in Japanese larch and a birch species at the sapling stage. It found different outcomes by species. Saplings are not mature trees, so those findings do not show whether ancient trees survive a carefully prepared relocation.

When is moving a tree a practical alternative to felling?

Relocation is worth assessing when the tree is healthy enough to move, there is space to prepare and preserve a viable root ball, enough lead time exists before construction, and a suitable transport route and destination are available. It also requires specialist labor and follow-up care; Pryor describes mature-tree relocation as costly, but the sources provide no comparable cost figure.

Burgon & Ball Stainless Steel Transplanting Spade Shovel, Wood D-Grip Handle
  • TRANSPLANTING SPADE ideal for digging straight down and leveraging root ball out of the ground
  • Y-SHAPED HANDLE is double-riveted for extra durability
  • STRAPPED SOCKET introduces flex at key joint for added longevity
  • STEEL SOCKET is double-gauge for extra strength
  • MIRROR-POLISHED TOOL HEAD for minimum resistance in soil

Felling may be the more realistic option if the tree cannot tolerate the work, a viable root ball cannot be retained, the site leaves no time for preparation, or safe transport and replanting are impractical. A qualified arborist or mature-tree relocation specialist can assess the specific tree, site constraints and likely risks before construction plans are fixed.

One news report cites possible root loss of up to 95% in balled-and-burlapped moves, attributing that figure to prior research referenced by authors of a 2026 paper. It is contextual information, not a measurement of ancient-tree relocation or a prediction for a particular project.
