How Four-Hour Battery Storage Works With the Electric Grid

A four-hour battery rating is the ratio of energy capacity to power output—not a chemistry label or guarantee of availability. Here’s how grid batteries charge, discharge, and support the electric grid.

A four-hour grid battery is rated to deliver its stored energy over four hours at a specified power output. The phrase describes the relationship between energy capacity, measured in megawatt-hours (MWh), and power capacity, measured in megawatts (MW). It does not name a battery chemistry, promise four hours of output under every condition, or mean the battery is used only in one four-hour block.

What “four-hour battery” means

Grid batteries have two ratings that answer different questions. Power, in MW, is the rate at which a battery can charge or discharge. Energy, in MWh, is the amount it can store or deliver. Duration relates the two: divide energy capacity by power capacity to find how long the battery could discharge at that output.

For example, a battery rated at 100 MW and 400 MWh has a four-hour nameplate duration at 100 MW: 400 MWh ÷ 100 MW = 4 hours. The same battery could run longer if it discharged at a lower rate, though its actual output and usable energy depend on operating conditions and system limits. A lower output does not create more stored energy; it spreads delivery over more time.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) illustrates the same relationship with a 2 MWh battery rated at 1 MW, which has two hours of duration at rated output. In its Annual Energy Outlook 2022 modeling, EIA assumed four MWh of stored energy for every MW of rated battery capacity for a four-hour system. That was an assumption for that model, not a universal engineering rule.

So the answer to “Can it power the grid for four hours?” is: it can be rated to deliver a specified output for four hours, starting with sufficient charge and operating within its limits. That is not a guarantee that it will always be available, discharge at full rated power, or meet every local reliability need for four hours.

How a grid battery charges and discharges

A grid battery takes in electricity when it charges and stores energy chemically. When it discharges, power conversion equipment changes the battery’s direct-current output into alternating current compatible with the grid. Dispatch software and grid instructions govern when and how much it charges or discharges; the precise control arrangement depends on the project.

A battery may charge from the grid. In a co-located solar-plus-storage arrangement, it may also charge from on-site solar when that charging is allowed. Co-location means the solar facility and battery are together as a project; it does not, by itself, establish that the battery can charge only from solar or that every solar-generated unit will be stored.

For daily energy shifting, operators can charge when demand or electricity prices are lower and discharge in higher-demand or higher-value hours. In a solar-heavy region, that can mean absorbing some midday solar generation and delivering electricity later, as solar output falls while use remains high. Storage shifts energy in time; it does not produce energy. Some energy is lost during charging and discharging, and there is no single round-trip-efficiency figure that applies to all projects.

Charging and discharging schedules are decisions about how to use the available energy, not proof of a fixed daily cycle. A battery’s dispatch can change with system needs, market conditions, its state of charge, and the services it is assigned to provide.

What a four-hour battery can do for the grid

Shift energy across the day

Hour-scale discharge can move electricity from one part of the day to another. A battery charged during lower-value hours may discharge during a period of higher demand or value. Where solar generation is abundant around midday, storage can help shift some of that electricity toward evening hours. Whether a project follows this pattern depends on its charging source, operating decisions, and grid or market conditions.

Respond to fast grid changes

Duration is not the same as response speed. A four-hour energy rating says how long a battery could sustain a specified output; it does not say how quickly the controls can change output. Batteries can also provide services that call for rapid adjustments, subject to their capabilities, dispatch, and applicable market rules.

FERC describes frequency regulation as responding “within seconds” to help balance electricity generation and demand and maintain U.S. grid frequency near 60 cycles per second. A battery providing that service makes smaller, faster adjustments than a sustained full-power discharge. The service is therefore compatible with a four-hour rating: one describes potential sustained duration, the other concerns response to changing grid conditions.

Support other grid services

FERC identifies operating reserves, voltage support, black start capability, and reactive power among ancillary services. A grid battery’s ability to provide a particular service depends on the project and how it is operated; a four-hour rating alone does not establish that capability. Compensation methods for ancillary services also differ among regions, so the possibility of providing a service should not be confused with a universal revenue source.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s “short-duration” dispatch category covers zero to ten hours. That classification includes uses such as intra-day energy shifting and frequency regulation; it is a broad duration category, not a statement that all batteries within it have the same role or operating pattern.

Why four hours is not a reliability guarantee

A battery’s stated duration is a rating under specified conditions, not a promise of firm output whenever the grid needs it. If the battery has discharged earlier, it may not have enough stored energy for a later peak. The length and timing of the system’s highest net-demand period matter too: a four-hour resource cannot sustain its rated output beyond its available energy, and a longer peak can extend past its rated duration.

EIA’s Annual Energy Outlook 2022 analysis explains that a battery’s capacity credit falls as the net peak—the demand remaining after variable generation such as solar and wind—is longer than the storage duration. The analysis also notes that regions use different approaches to value capacity. NREL describes firm capacity as a four-plus-hour service, but that description does not mean any four-hour battery automatically supplies firm capacity in every system. What it can contribute depends on when it is needed and how much energy remains available.

How to compare two grid batteries

Duration alone is not enough to compare projects. Two batteries can both be described as four-hour systems while having very different power scales, energy capacities, operating duties, and reliability contributions. Start with the ratings, then consider the job and conditions under which each system is expected to operate.

Comparison point What to check Why it matters
Power Rated charge and discharge capability in MW Indicates the rate at which the system can take in or deliver electricity.
Energy Stored or deliverable energy in MWh Indicates the amount of energy available, subject to operating conditions and limits.
Duration MWh divided by MW, with the output rate stated Shows the rated discharge period at that output; the ratio alone does not describe every operating condition.
Dispatch role Fast grid services, daily shifting, capacity support, or a combination Different roles place different demands on timing, response, and available energy.
Operating context Charging source, state of charge, net-peak timing and length, reliability rules, and market design These conditions affect when the battery can operate and what contribution it can make.

For instance, a 100 MW / 400 MWh system and a 10 MW / 40 MWh system both have four-hour nameplate duration at rated output. The first is rated for ten times the power and ten times the energy of the second. Neither duration label alone explains its intended dispatch, availability at peak, or local capacity value.

What the duration label does not tell you

  • Battery chemistry: Four hours is an energy-to-power description, not a chemistry name.
  • Full-time availability: The rating does not ensure the battery is charged and ready whenever needed.
  • A single daily operating block: A four-hour system is not necessarily used for exactly four consecutive hours or cycled once every day.
  • Its charging source: A grid-connected battery may charge from the grid; a co-located solar project may charge from on-site solar when allowed.
  • Project economics or environmental results: The rating alone establishes no universal cost, revenue, efficiency, lifespan, or emissions reduction.

Those outcomes require project-specific evidence. EIA’s modeling assumption for a four-hour system should not be read as a current market total or a complete design specification. Nor should older deployment statistics be treated as current without a clearly dated source.

How to read a four-hour rating in practice

When a project description says “four-hour battery,” treat it as a starting point and ask what output the duration refers to. The basic check is MWh ÷ MW. Then distinguish the rated relationship from the expected operating contribution: confirm the stated power and energy, the role the battery is meant to play, and whether its available charge and the local peak period line up with that role.

  1. Find the MW rating. This is the stated power level at which duration is being described.
  2. Find the MWh rating. This is the system’s stated energy capacity or delivery amount; do not substitute MW for MWh.
  3. Divide energy by power. For example, 400 MWh ÷ 100 MW = four hours at 100 MW.
  4. Check the operating context. Consider when charging occurs, what services use the battery, when it is expected to be available, and how long the relevant net peak lasts.
  5. Read reliability claims regionally. Capacity credit or accreditation depends on local methods and system conditions, not duration alone.

This reading separates the useful engineering shorthand from the larger questions of dispatch and reliability. A four-hour label tells you the rated energy-to-power relationship; system context tells you when and how that stored energy can help the grid.
