Smart-home devices could respond more quickly and use context better when they analyze sensor data locally instead of sending every decision to the cloud. That is the central case made in an EE Times interview published September 12, 2025, by Gregory Guez, Infineon’s senior director of IoT and Edge AI. For builders, the idea is less about making every device autonomous than about deciding which jobs belong on a device, across the home, or in the cloud.
What “the next level” means for a smart home
In the interview, Guez describes edge AI as a way for a device to interpret environmental data and user behavior, then act at the appropriate time. A doorbell, for example, could make an immediate decision locally rather than wait for a remote service. A thermostat could use readings from multiple points around a home to respond to conditions in context.
That approach may reduce the delay associated with sending data away and waiting for a response, and may reduce how much information leaves a device. Those are Guez’s stated advantages, not results from a performance test in the episode. The interview reports no measured latency, privacy, energy-saving, or accuracy figures.
Guez summed up the relationship between interoperability and device intelligence this way: “Matter is creating the communication pipeline, and Edge AI more like the personality of the device.” It is a metaphor from the conversation, not a formal definition of Matter.

Which decisions belong on-device, across the home, or in the cloud?
Edge AI does not require moving every computation into every device. The interview presents a hybrid design in which the location of a decision depends on its urgency, data needs, and energy cost.
| Where work runs | Example from the interview | What it can offer | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| On the device | A doorbell deciding whether to react to an event; an immediate thermostat response | A local response without waiting for a remote service; potentially less data sent off-device | Processing, memory, model size, cost, and power are constrained by the device |
| Across home devices or nodes | Thermostat sensing distributed around a home; security sensing that combines several inputs | Context from more than one location or sensor type | Devices still need to coordinate, and the episode supplies no measured performance or interoperability results |
| In the cloud | Longer-term energy analysis and software or model updates | Room for heavier or longer-horizon work than an individual device may handle | Cloud-dependent tasks require remote communication; the episode does not specify data-retention or service arrangements |
For a construction project, this is a useful planning distinction: identify which functions must work immediately, which benefit from information gathered around the home, and which can wait for cloud processing. The interview does not prescribe a building design or a particular device layout, so those choices still depend on the project and the selected products.

Why combine sensors in home security?
A single sensor can leave ambiguity about what is happening. Guez’s example combines video, audio, motion, and vibration so a system might distinguish a person at the door from a possible intrusion event. More context could help a system avoid treating every signal as the same kind of alert.
The episode gives no measured accuracy or false-alarm reduction, and it does not establish that a retail doorbell already performs this kind of fusion. Treat it as an architectural possibility, not a guarantee about a product. More sensors also mean more design questions: what each sensor captures, how the device combines signals, and what information is stored or transmitted.

Power and model design set practical limits
Local inference uses computing resources in the device. Guez argues that a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) and lightweight, optimized models can make AI more practical in battery-powered products. The discussion also connects inference speed with model size, memory, cost, and battery constraints.
No battery-life figure, power-consumption comparison, or test method appears in the episode. An NPU alone therefore cannot establish how long a particular camera, doorbell, or sensor will run. For a project team, the relevant evidence is device-specific: the maker’s stated power requirements and operating conditions, alongside what the proposed local features actually do.

Local processing can help privacy, but it is not a security guarantee
Keeping some sensitive data on a device can reduce the need to send it elsewhere. But local processing does not by itself secure stored information, communications, firmware, or the AI model. Guez raises several device-level protections as relevant design considerations:
- Secure boot and a root of trust: intended to help protect the device’s startup process and firmware from manipulation.
- Protected storage and tamper measures: relevant to safeguarding data and sensitive device material.
- Model protection: reverse engineering can matter when a model or its implementation is valuable.
- Data handling: check what the device sends off-device, what it keeps locally, and how updates are delivered.
These are topics raised in a vendor-sponsored interview, not a complete threat model or an independent security assessment. Guez also asserts that Infineon’s PSOC Edge has PSA Level 4 certification; that claim was not independently verified for this article. Certification and security claims should be checked against current product documentation before they guide a specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInteroperability is still a work in progress
Guez describes Matter as an effort to make commissioning and communication more standardized, while local intelligence could differentiate one device from another. He characterizes adoption as being at an early ramp and expects fragmentation to persist for some time. That is his view in the September 2025 episode, not a current independent measurement of market adoption.

For builders and integrators, a common standard may simplify parts of setup and communication, but it does not prove that every product, feature, or ecosystem will work together. Confirm compatibility for the specific devices and functions in a project rather than assuming that a shared standard removes all integration work.
What developers and project teams can take from the discussion
Guez says teams may simulate sensor signals, collect data in controlled environments, and adapt existing vision or audio models. He names Infineon’s Deepcraft Studio and PSOC Edge hardware as development offerings. These are vendor descriptions; the episode does not independently evaluate the tools, establish their current availability, or provide pricing or comparative specifications.
The conversation also touches on planning for post-quantum cryptography and names Infineon PSOC C3 Performance Line, OPTIGA TPM SLB 9672, and OPTIGA Authenticate. These product and timing statements are Guez’s, and the episode does not establish current standards status or independently verify product claims. They are not a substitute for a project-specific security review.

The interview is useful as a design discussion: it connects local inference, sensor fusion, power constraints, security, and interoperability, and it makes clear that edge and cloud processing can coexist. Infineon sponsored the episode, and the performance and roadmap assertions are the guest’s rather than independent test findings.
- It does not report measured smart-home adoption, edge-AI energy savings, inference latency, false-alarm reduction, Matter penetration, or carbon reduction.
- It does not compare consumer products or establish that a particular camera, doorbell, or thermostat implements the described capabilities.
- Its illustrative time horizons are not measured forecasts.
The practical point for a building project is to specify capabilities and data flows, not to rely on the label “AI.” Decide what must respond locally, what data should leave the home, how devices will be secured and updated, and which integrations must work before choosing equipment.
