She started in the accounting department at age 16. Instead of remaining in an office role, she took on practical work: loading trucks, assembling equipment and managing projects. That progression gave her direct exposure to how roofing crews handled asphalt, coal tar pitch, insulation and waterproofing details. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1946 with a Bachelor of Arts and a chemistry minor, she moved decisively toward product development.

What roofing products did Dorothy Lawrence develop?
Glasfab woven glass fabric
The profiles credit Lawrence with developing Glasfab in 1946. It was a woven glass fabric intended for roofing and waterproofing and made with resin, asphalt and coal tar pitch. The Roofing Contractor account says the material complied with ASTM D 1668 and Federal Specification HH-C-466 a and b. Those compliance statements are presented here as the publication reported them; the underlying standards and product records were not independently reviewed for this biography.
Glasfab technology later became significant enough to be sold to Koppers in 1966. That transaction ended one phase of Lawrence’s work and preceded the creation of Laurent Corporation.
The original Lexsuco insulation clip
In 1948, while working for Lexington Supply Company, Lawrence developed the design for the original Lexsuco insulation clip. An insulation clip is a small component, but its performance affects how insulation is held in place and how a roof assembly is built. The profiles identify this as Lawrence’s design; they do not provide a patent number, drawing or independent archive record.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHot-bitumen tankers and handling systems
Both trade profiles attribute to Lawrence the development of tankers and systems for pumping and handling hot asphalt and coal tar pitch. No separate year is supplied. The work addressed a central hazard and logistics problem in built-up roofing: moving hot, viscous binders from transport equipment to the point of application while keeping the material usable and the operation controlled.
Early rubber-utilizing roofing sheets
The profiles date Lawrence’s rubber-utilizing roofing and waterproofing sheets to 1953 and describe them as early modified-bituminous systems. In 1957, they report that she developed an asphalt and synthetic-rubber formulation intended to duplicate coal tar pitch. These milestones are historical claims attributed to the profiles, not a complete list of every formulation produced by her companies.
From TWIN-MILL to Laurent Corporation
Lawrence and Jack C. Lawrence formed Twinsburg-Miller Corporation in 1950. The company was also known as TWIN-MILL. Its work grew from the Glasfab technology and related roofing and waterproofing materials.

After Glasfab was sold to Koppers in 1966, Lawrence formed Laurent Corporation. The profiles associate Laurent with Laurenco roofing and waterproofing systems and with private-label fabrics, felts, coatings and adhesives. They do not establish the current ownership, product catalog, distribution channels or availability of those systems. Anyone seeking a present-day specification would need current manufacturer documentation rather than relying on the historical descriptions.

When Jack Lawrence died in 1971, Dorothy continued to run the company. That continuity matters because her role was not limited to inventing a material; she also managed manufacturing, product decisions and the business that brought systems to contractors.
Her role in ASTM and the American Concrete Institute
ASTM Committee D08
The profiles state that Lawrence became the first woman member of ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing, Waterproofing and Bituminous Materials in 1972. They also report that she chaired Subcommittee D08.19, served as secretary for several D08 subcommittees, and received ASTM’s Award of Merit and Fellow recognition.
Committee service is different from selling a product. ASTM work involves reviewing test methods, material definitions and performance requirements with other specialists. Lawrence’s participation placed a manufacturer and field-experienced woman in a forum that helped define how roofing and waterproofing materials were evaluated.
ACI Committee 515 on Coatings
The Building Enclosure retrospective says Lawrence joined the American Concrete Institute in 1976 and chaired Committee 515 on Coatings from March 1986 through March 1990. That work connected her roofing background with coatings used to protect concrete and other building elements.

These are reported project associations, not independently audited specifications. A project name alone does not establish which Laurent or TWIN-MILL product was used, the exact assembly, the installer, the date of installation or its present condition. Those details would have to be confirmed through construction specifications, archives or owner records.

Develop materials from observed performance
Lawrence’s most direct statement of method, reproduced by Roofing Contractor, was: “The key to proper material development is that the developer must know what the materials do.” Her career followed that principle. She handled equipment and projects before developing formulations, so product decisions were tied to installation behavior rather than laboratory descriptions alone.
She added, “It does no good to solve one problem and create five others.” In practical terms, a binder, sheet or coating has to work as part of an assembly. Improving one property while creating adhesion, handling, compatibility or durability problems elsewhere is not a successful roof-system solution.
Respect supervision and crew skill
Lawrence observed, “Superintendents that work in the field are now rare birds.” The comment reflects her view that experienced supervision is a technical resource. A specification can identify materials, but trained people still have to prepare surfaces, control temperatures, sequence work and recognize defects.
Her advice should not be treated as a substitute for current safety rules, manufacturer instructions or project-specific engineering. It is a historical account of the priorities she believed produced reliable work.
Keep equipment ready
Another quoted instruction was, “Always fix all broken equipment before it leaves the yard.” For hot-bitumen work in particular, pumps, hoses, tanks and controls affect both production and safety. The statement captures a maintenance discipline: equipment should be inspected and repaired before a crew reaches the project, not after a failure interrupts installation.

Learn from failures in the assembly
One profile recounts a below-grade project in which scuppers clogged with debris. The eventual decision was to fill the scuppers and waterproof the slab. The anecdote is attributed to the profile and should be understood as a project-specific example, not a universal design recommendation. Drainage, relief and waterproofing decisions must follow the actual structure, water conditions, code requirements and engineer’s details.
Recognize changing construction workplaces
Lawrence also said, “It is much nicer now and generally women are more accepted on construction sites.” Her observation places her own career in a changing industry. Entering field and manufacturing work as a young woman, then becoming a committee chair and company owner, made her visibility part of her professional legacy as well as a personal achievement.
Why she is called the “First Lady of Roofing and Waterproofing”
The title combines several distinctions rather than naming one invention. Lawrence was a woman who learned roofing from the field, developed materials after studying chemistry, led companies that manufactured systems, participated in ASTM standards and chaired an ACI coatings committee. The profiles also connect her work with prominent buildings and infrastructure.
Her career is therefore useful as a history of how roofing technology advances: installers identify recurring problems, developers translate those problems into materials or equipment, manufacturers turn them into repeatable systems, and standards organizations establish ways to describe and test performance.
What the historical record establishes—and what it does not
The two profiles provide a coherent chronology, product descriptions, professional roles, quotations and project leads. They do not independently establish patent ownership, complete product formulas, test data, warranty records, current company status or the exact specifications used at each named building. They also do not provide a current source for purchasing Laurenco materials.

For a restoration, replacement or new roof, use current project documents, applicable codes, a qualified designer and the present manufacturer’s technical literature. Lawrence’s historical milestones can explain where certain ideas came from, but they cannot by themselves select a modern membrane, coating, insulation attachment or waterproofing detail.
Lawrence’s lasting significance
Dorothy Lawrence’s importance lies in the full chain of work she represented. She knew the job site because she had loaded trucks, assembled equipment and managed projects. She understood formulation because she had chemistry training and developed resin-, asphalt-, coal-tar- and rubber-based materials. She understood production because she built and ran companies. And she influenced professional practice through ASTM and ACI service.
That combination explains why trade publications remember her as the First Lady of Roofing and Waterproofing: not simply as an inventor, but as a field-informed engineer of materials, equipment, standards and organizations.
