The answer depends on which camera you mean. To view a separate smart security camera or video doorbell, connect it to Alexa through the manufacturer’s official skill, then say, “Alexa, show the [camera name].” To view the Echo Show’s own built-in camera remotely, use an authorized Drop In connection. These are different features with different setup and privacy controls.
View an external security camera on an Echo Show
Alexa can display live video from compatible cameras and doorbells on Echo devices with screens. Compatibility is not universal: it depends on the camera model, manufacturer’s Alexa skill, region, account, and supported features. See Amazon’s Alexa camera documentation for the capability framework.

What you need
- An Echo Show registered to the intended Amazon account.
- A camera that is installed and working in its manufacturer’s app.
- Reliable internet access for both devices. They do not necessarily need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
- The official Alexa skill for the camera brand, where required.
- The manufacturer account linked to Alexa.
- A unique, simple camera name such as “front door” or “driveway.”
- Current Echo Show software and camera firmware.
- An open camera shutter and disabled privacy mode, if the camera has either.
Setup steps
- Finish setup in the camera’s own app. Confirm that live video works there first.
- Open the Alexa app and search for the camera manufacturer’s official skill.
- Enable the skill and sign in with the same account used to configure the camera.
- Discover the device. Ask Alexa to discover devices, or use the device-discovery controls in the Alexa app. Labels can vary by app version.
- Check the camera name. Make it short, distinct, and easy to pronounce. Avoid duplicate names such as two devices called “front door.”
- Test the feed by saying, “Alexa, show the front door.”
Voice commands to try
| Goal | Example | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Open a live feed | “Alexa, show the front door.” | Replace the name with the camera’s Alexa device name. |
| Request a feed explicitly | “Alexa, show the front door camera.” | Supported by some integrations. |
| Use feed wording | “Alexa, show the front door feed.” | Documented by the Google Nest Alexa skill. |
| Close the feed | “Alexa, hide the front door.” | Supported by some skills. |
| Stop video | “Alexa, stop.” | A useful general fallback. |
| Answer a compatible doorbell | “Alexa, answer the front door.” | Requires a compatible doorbell integration. |
The Google Nest Alexa skill documents “show the [camera name] feed” and “hide the [camera name] feed.” The Ring Alexa skill documents live-view, hide, recent-activity, and compatible doorbell-answer commands. The Wyze Alexa skill gives examples such as “show my front door camera” and “show my kitchen.”

Use the Echo Show screen instead of your voice
Depending on the Echo Show generation and software version, open the device’s Smart Home, Devices, or camera-related controls, select the camera, and choose the live-view option. There is no single touch path that applies identically to every Echo Show interface.

View the Echo Show’s built-in camera
The Echo Show is not normally opened as a standard local camera viewer. Remote access to its built-in camera is generally handled through Alexa Drop In, an optional communication feature for authorized contacts and devices.
- Make sure the Echo Show is online and registered to the correct Amazon account.
- Confirm that Drop In is enabled for the relevant account and device.
- Give the person initiating the connection permission to use Drop In.
- Open the Echo Show’s physical camera shutter, if it has one.
- Disable any privacy mode that blocks video or communications.
- In the Alexa app, open the Conversation icon, choose Drop In, and select the permitted contact or device. Labels may differ by app release.
From an authorized Alexa device, you can also say something like, “Alexa, drop in on [device name].” Amazon describes Drop In and its Alexa app controls in its communication guidance.

Privacy matters
Drop In is permission-based. A connected Echo Show may display a visual indication when the connection is made, and its shutter or privacy settings can deliberately block video. Enable Drop In only for people you trust, protect the Amazon account, and remember that an Echo Show camera and an external security camera are separate privacy surfaces. This feature should never be treated as covert monitoring.
Can you talk through the camera?
Sometimes. Two-way audio depends on the camera model, Alexa skill, Echo Show model, region, account, and the way communication is initiated. Amazon lists live view, two-way communication, and recording playback as separate capabilities rather than universal features.
Ring documents two-way communication on compatible Echo devices, including “Alexa, answer the front door.” By contrast, the cited Wyze skill listing supports viewing and listening but says playback and speaking through Alexa devices are unavailable through that integration. Do not assume that a camera with a microphone automatically supports Alexa two-way talk.

- Convenient Power – Easily power your device with the Quick Release Battery Pack.
- Speak to visitors on camera – Talk to guests anytime, from anywhere with Two-Way Talk.
Pan, tilt, zoom, and recorded video
- Digital zoom enlarges the displayed image and does not move the camera.
- Physical pan or tilt moves a compatible motorized camera.
- Playback accesses stored footage rather than the current live view.
Amazon has documented digital controls and physical pan/tilt for compatible third-party integrations on Echo Show and the Alexa app, but a motorized camera may not expose those controls through Alexa. Likewise, live view, recording history, alerts, and playback can have different subscription requirements. Check the specific brand and model before buying or assuming a feature.
Brand-specific considerations
Ring
Ring is a strong fit for Alexa-first households that want live doorbell viewing, compatible doorbell answering, and two-way communication from an Echo Show. Recording and history features may require a separate Ring plan, and those requirements should not be confused with live-view access. Visit Ring and its official Alexa skill for model-specific details.
Wyze
Wyze supports Alexa live view for supported models, but the cited skill listing documents limitations including no playback or speaking through Alexa devices. It also identifies Wyze Cam V1 as unsupported by that listing. Verify the exact model before relying on it. See Wyze and its Alexa skill.

- Versatile mounting options – Find the perfect angle on a table, or mount up high with the flexible swivel mount. Indoor Cam is plug-in, making it easy to move where you need it.
Google Nest
Existing Nest users can connect compatible cameras and doorbells to Alexa, but setup involves both Google Home and Alexa account linking. Some doorbell communication commands are limited to specified Nest Doorbell models. See the Google connected-home page and Google Nest Alexa skill.
Arlo
Arlo is an option for readers comparing camera hardware and cloud features. Amazon identifies Arlo among Alexa-connected camera examples, but capabilities and plan requirements vary by model and service tier. Check Arlo’s current model information.

Blink
Blink is a natural candidate for an Amazon-oriented setup. Live-view duration, local storage, recording access, and other capabilities vary by model and plan, so confirm the particular camera’s Alexa support at Blink.

Why the feed will not load: a prioritized fix
- Test the camera in its manufacturer’s app. If it fails there, check power, Wi-Fi, internet service, firmware, account login, and the manufacturer’s service status before troubleshooting Alexa.
- Check the Alexa skill and account link. Make sure the official skill is enabled and linked to the account that owns the camera. Relinking may be necessary.
- Rediscover devices. Run device discovery after adding, renaming, or moving a camera.
- Simplify the name. Use one short, unique name and try the exact name Alexa shows for the device.
- Use the brand’s documented command. Try “show the feed,” “show the camera,” or “answer the front door” according to the integration.
- Check privacy and permissions. For an external camera, inspect privacy mode and shared-user access. For the Echo Show camera, check Drop In permission, the shutter, and communication settings.
- Restart the system. Restart the camera, Echo Show, and—if other devices are offline—the router.
- Separate feature failure from integration failure. Live video may work even when playback, two-way talk, doorbell answering, motion control, or automatic alerts are unsupported.
What the Echo Show can—and cannot—guarantee
An Echo Show is a display and control endpoint, not a replacement for a dedicated security-camera system. A camera may appear in Alexa but fail to stream because of account authorization, firmware, cloud-service problems, or a temporary skill issue. Similarly, Matter compatibility alone does not prove that every Matter camera can provide live video on an Echo Show; Amazon’s Matter support information lists supported device categories and Echo models, but video capability still requires the relevant integration.
Some camera integrations can also expose detection events that trigger announcements, notifications, or automatic live feeds on supported Echo Show devices. That is an integration-specific capability, not a guaranteed behavior for every camera.
Quick decision guide
- Want to see a Ring, Wyze, Nest, Arlo, or Blink camera? Install it in its own app, link its official Alexa skill, discover it, and say, “Alexa, show the [camera name].”
- Want to see the Echo Show itself? Use authorized Drop In and check the shutter and privacy settings.
- Need talking, playback, or pan/tilt? Check the exact camera model’s Alexa capability list; live view does not imply every other feature.
- Still seeing a black screen or “camera not found” message? Test the manufacturer app first, then verify account linking, discovery, naming, permissions, updates, and restarts.
