Fill or relocate screw holes with a glued wood plug or a compatible repair plate. For a cup bore drilled in the wrong stile, a matching wood patch can make a less visible repair than simply plugging the large opening.
Identify the hole and the damage
Cabinet hinges use small screw holes to fasten the hinge or mounting plate, and some concealed European-style hinges also require a much larger cup-shaped bore in the door. These are different repairs: a screw-hole fix will not conceal or restore a misplaced cup bore.
Remove the hinge and inspect the surrounding wood. If the material is sound and only a screw hole is stripped or misplaced, a glued wood sliver or plug may be enough. More extensive damage may call for a dowel or a repair plate. If the cup bore is in the wrong stile, consider whether a visible patch is acceptable before choosing a repair.
Repair misplaced or stripped screw holes
Use a glued wood sliver or plug for a small hole
- Remove the hinge hardware and clear loose debris from the hole.
- Fit a small wood sliver or other snug piece of wood into the hole with wood glue. Toothpicks are another option described by This Old House.
- Allow the glue to cure as directed by its manufacturer. Then drill a suitable pilot hole and reinstall the hinge.
For a severely damaged screw hole, the This Old House guide also describes drilling out the hole and gluing in a dowel before drilling a new pilot hole. A longer screw or threaded insert may be alternatives in some situations, but the repair must suit the hinge and available material. Check that the screw head sits properly: a head that projects beyond the hinge leaf can bind when the door closes.

Use a repair plate when the mounting area is badly damaged
A cabinet hinge repair plate can provide a new fastening surface and screw positions when the original cabinet-side mounting area is no longer sound. The Model 931514600 repair-kit instructions list plates for face-frame and frameless cabinets, screws, and plastic dowels. They direct users to fill stripped original holes with the kit’s plastic dowels, select the plate that matches the cabinet style, and drill pilot holes where new screw holes are needed.
Before using a kit, check that its plate works with the cabinet construction and existing hinge. Measure and mark the plate position according to its instructions; do not assume that a plate or its hole pattern will fit every hinge.

Patch a European cup bore drilled in the wrong stile
A large cup bore is a different repair from a screw hole. For the wrong-stile situation described by Wood Magazine on August 27, 2020, the proposed approach is to remove a shallow strip across the stile and glue in matching stock. This is a careful woodworking repair intended to leave a less conspicuous patch; it requires suitable tools, accurate fitting, and clamping.
- Cut a rabbet across the full width of the stile at the misplaced bore. Wood Magazine specifies a 1/8-inch-deep rabbet for that described case.
- Fit a matching strip of stock, 1/8 inch thick in that method, and glue and clamp it in place.
- After the adhesive has cured, smooth the patch. Fill small voids with glue and wood dust, then smooth the surface again as needed.
- Lay out and drill the cup bore in the correct stile, using the hinge’s actual geometry to position it.
Those dimensions belong to Wood Magazine’s particular example; they are not universal measurements for every door or hinge. A simple plug may close the opening, but the matching strip method is the cited option when the patch needs to be less visible.

Position and drill replacement holes carefully
For any new screw holes, mark their position from the actual hinge or mounting plate rather than relying on the old holes. Use the plate’s instructions where applicable and drill pilot holes suited to the fasteners and material. Neither a universal screw size, cure time, nor hinge-template dimension is established by the cited sources, so follow the adhesive, hinge, and repair-kit instructions for the specific job.
