How Diagonal Bracing Helps Keep Buildings From Collapsing

Diagonal bracing can help prevent a building collapse by stopping its frames from racking sideways under wind or earthquake forces. A brace is not a stand-alone safeguard, however. It must be designed with the floor and roof diaphragms, vertical frames, connections, columns, and foundation as one continuous lateral-force-resisting system. If any link is missing, weak, or discontinuous, the brace may not deliver its intended protection.

What diagonal bracing does

Most gravity framing is arranged as rectangles. A rectangle can deform into a parallelogram when a horizontal force pushes on it. Wind pressure, seismic shaking, uneven soil movement, equipment impact, and construction-stage loads can all create this kind of sideways demand.

A diagonal member divides the rectangular bay into triangles. Triangles do not change shape without changing the length of at least one side, so the diagonal takes axial force—tension, compression, or a designed combination of both—while the connected beams and columns transfer that force. The result is less frame racking and a clearer route for horizontal forces.

That explanation is conceptual, not a sizing rule. The actual force in a brace depends on the building’s geometry, the direction and magnitude of loading, the selected structural system, member stiffness, connection behavior, and how the rest of the building shares the demand. A visible diagonal therefore proves only that a member is present; it does not prove that the building has adequate capacity.

The complete load path matters more than the brace alone

Horizontal forces must travel through a connected sequence to reach the ground. FEMA’s seismic rehabilitation guidance describes braced frames as part of this load path and calls for continuity from the foundation to the roof. In a typical building, the sequence is:

  1. Roof or floor diaphragm: The deck, sheathing, slab, or other horizontal element gathers lateral forces from wind pressure, cladding, partitions, and inertia during an earthquake.
  2. Collectors and drag elements: Beams, chords, ledgers, or other designated members concentrate and redirect diaphragm forces toward the vertical resisting lines.
  3. Vertical lateral-force-resisting elements: Braced frames, moment-resisting frames, or shear walls carry the force down through the stories.
  4. Connections: Bolts, welds, anchors, plates, fasteners, and their surrounding material transfer force between diaphragms, braces, beams, columns, and walls.
  5. Foundation and soil: Base plates, anchor rods, footings, piles, and the supporting soil spread overturning, shear, and uplift forces safely into the ground.

A brace that stops at a flexible floor, is not anchored into the foundation, or is separated from the diaphragm by an unverified connection cannot complete this path. Openings, offsets, changes in framing direction, and discontinuities between stories can also create concentrated demands that must be addressed in design.

How wind and earthquake forces use a braced frame

Wind loading

Wind pushes on the building envelope and is transferred to roof and floor diaphragms. Those diaphragms distribute the force to the braced lines. Depending on wind direction, one diagonal may go into tension while another member or the surrounding frame takes compression. The design must account for both principal directions, torsion caused by an uneven layout, and the stiffness needed to limit drift and damage to cladding or interior finishes.

Earthquake loading

During an earthquake, the ground accelerates the foundation while the floors and roof develop inertia forces. The diaphragm sends those forces to the vertical resisting elements. A system can be strong enough to carry a peak force yet too flexible to control drift, or stiff enough to limit movement but unable to sustain repeated inelastic deformation. Seismic design therefore considers strength, stiffness, deformation, and how braces, beams, columns, and connections behave through cyclic loading.

Bracing and other lateral-resisting choices

There is no universally best system. The appropriate choice depends on hazard, building height and use, geometry, openings, materials, architectural constraints, and the locally adopted design requirements. The APA’s Diaphragms and Shear Walls Design and Construction Guide (L350), revised May 1, 2024, identifies several ways to create a lateral system.

System How it resists lateral force Important design questions
Braced frame Diagonal members form triangulated bays and carry axial forces through a vertical frame line. Are braces continuous between levels? Can the diaphragm, collectors, connections, columns, and foundation carry the resulting force?
Diagonal rods or X-bracing Crossed rods or braces provide a direct diagonal load path; the active member or members depend on the loading direction and detailing. Are tension, compression, slackness, connection eccentricity, corrosion, and inspection requirements addressed?
Rigid or moment frame Beam-column joints resist bending and shear, allowing open bays without diagonal members. Do the joints, beams, columns, and foundations have the required strength, stiffness, and deformation capacity?
Shear wall and diaphragm system Wall panels and horizontal diaphragms act as broad vertical and horizontal planes that transfer force to the foundation. Are panel boundaries, openings, collectors, hold-downs, anchorage, and wall-to-diaphragm connections continuous?

These categories can be combined in one building. A designer may use braced frames in one direction, moment frames in another, and walls around cores or stair towers. The governing code determines how the systems may share forces and how irregularities must be analyzed.

What concentrically braced frames add—and what they do not prove

NIST’s 2013 guide addresses special concentrically braced frame systems made for steel construction. In these frames, the braces meet the beam-column line so the vertical frame behaves like a concentric truss. NIST discusses their lateral strength and stiffness together with seismic response and the detailing needed for braces, connections, beams, and columns.

Those observations apply to the specific steel system covered by the guide, not automatically to every diagonal brace, timber frame, masonry wall, or light-gauge assembly. A brace can be strong while its gusset plate, weld, bolt group, beam, column, or anchor fails first. Seismic detailing must also account for repeated reversals and the intended sequence of yielding or other deformation. The engineer must verify the complete assembly rather than select a brace from a catalog.

Why a braced building can still collapse

Broken or incomplete continuity

Removing a brace at one floor, stopping it above a transfer beam, changing its alignment, or omitting a collector can force the load into members that were not designed for it. FEMA’s guidance emphasizes a continuous path from roof to foundation and adequate connections at each transition.

Diaphragm and opening problems

A roof or floor with large openings, weak sheathing, unblocked panel edges, poor nailing, or inadequate attachment may not deliver the calculated force to the braces. Openings can also change the effective enclosure and the pressure applied by wind. The design must identify where force enters and leaves the diaphragm instead of treating the deck as an automatically rigid plate.

Connection or foundation failure

Brace capacity is irrelevant if bolts tear through a plate, a weld fractures, a column buckles, an anchor pulls out, or the footing overturns. Connections frequently experience concentrated forces and must be designed, detailed, installed, and inspected as structural components.

Unanticipated redistribution and progressive failure

Buildings often have redundancy, but a small number of failed members can redistribute load to adjacent members. NIST’s investigation of the Dallas Cowboys practice-facility collapse recommended examining bracing assumptions, building openings, and possible propagation after failure of a limited number of members. The facility collapsed under wind loads significantly below those required by the applicable design standards, illustrating why the real load path and enclosure behavior must be checked rather than inferred from a drawing symbol.

Loads outside the design assumptions

Changes in use, added equipment, heavier roofing, altered cladding, corrosion, fire damage, construction sequencing, or unusual weather can invalidate original assumptions. A fabric enclosure or other covering may contribute stiffness or wind area differently from what the engineer modeled. Existing buildings require a condition survey and a new analysis when their loads or configuration change.

How engineers decide whether bracing is appropriate

A project-specific design normally proceeds through the following decisions. The sequence is a framework for understanding the work, not a do-it-yourself retrofit method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define hazards and performance goals. Establish the site’s wind, seismic, snow, flood, soil, and other applicable demands, along with the building’s occupancy and required performance level.
  2. Map the geometry and materials. Document story heights, spans, mass, openings, irregularities, existing damage, corrosion, and the properties of steel, timber, concrete, masonry, fasteners, and foundations.
  3. Select a compatible lateral system. Compare braced frames, rigid frames, diagonal rods, shear walls, diaphragms, or combinations by strength, stiffness, drift, deformation behavior, constructability, fire protection, access, and architectural impact.
  4. Trace every load path. Follow force from cladding and floor areas through diaphragms, collectors, braces or walls, beams and columns, connections, anchors, foundations, and soil in both principal directions.
  5. Design members and connections together. Check tension, compression, buckling, yielding, fracture, shear, bending, interaction, anchorage, and the expected deformation sequence. A connection must be compatible with the brace’s movement and force direction.
  6. Check continuity and redundancy. Review story-to-story alignment, transfers, openings, torsion, accidental damage scenarios, and whether alternate members can carry redistributed force.
  7. Review against the adopted code. The engineer applies the jurisdiction’s current wind, seismic, material, foundation, fire, and existing-building provisions. FEMA manuals and NIST guides provide technical context but do not replace the locally adopted code.
  8. Control construction and maintenance. Require approved shop drawings, qualified installation, inspection of welds and bolts, protection from corrosion and fire, and periodic checks after impact, alteration, or severe weather.

What owners should check in an existing building

Do not install a generic diagonal, cable, or “X” kit because a bay appears flexible. A brace changes the force distribution and can overload a diaphragm, collector, column, connection, or foundation. Only a qualified structural engineer with access to the building’s drawings and site conditions can determine whether a retrofit is safe.

  • Ask whether the evaluation covers the entire roof-to-foundation load path, not just the proposed brace.
  • Request the assumed wind and earthquake hazards, building openings, enclosure classification, and any changes since original construction.
  • Confirm that floor and roof diaphragms, collectors, connections, columns, and foundations are included in the checks.
  • Require details for temporary stability during construction; removing cladding or existing braces can create a short-term collapse hazard.
  • Arrange inspection after major alterations, vehicle impact, fire, flooding, corrosion, or an earthquake, even when a brace looks undamaged.

What “prevents collapse” means in practice

Diagonal bracing is best understood as one component of a designed lateral-force-resisting system. Properly proportioned and connected braces can limit racking, carry calculated horizontal forces, and help a building maintain a stable load path. They cannot make a building earthquake-proof, guarantee survival under every wind event, or compensate for inadequate diaphragms, connections, foundations, detailing, construction, or maintenance.

The practical question is therefore not “Does this building have diagonal braces?” It is “Can the complete, continuous system transfer the specified forces and sustain the required deformations with the intended failure sequence?” That answer belongs to a project-specific structural analysis and the current requirements of the building’s jurisdiction.
