How Devin Bowman Frames Safer, Sustainable School Glazing Design

School glazing works best when it is designed as part of a complete security, fire, daylight, acoustic and energy strategy—not selected as a single “security glass” product. In the June 24, 2026 Building Enclosure episode, Technical Glass Products General Manager Devin Bowman discusses how architects can preserve daylight and visual connection while making school openings harder to penetrate, safer in a fire and better suited to long-term resilience.

What Bowman’s school-glazing discussion covers

Bowman’s episode, “Glazing’s Contribution to Safer School Design,” is listed at 19 minutes, 7 seconds and was published June 24, 2026. The discussion treats glazing as one part of a larger design problem: schools need controlled access and delayed forced entry, but they also need daylight, views, acoustic comfort, thermal performance and durable materials. The episode listing is available from Building Enclosure.

That framing matters because a pane can be strong in one respect and unsuitable in another. A product selected for impact resistance may not provide a required fire rating. A fire-rated lite may depend on a particular frame, seal, bead, door or hardware set. A large transparent opening can improve supervision and daylight yet create acoustic, solar-gain or privacy problems if the complete assembly is not engineered for the room.

Why school glazing has to solve several problems at once

Security and time

Security glazing is not a universal rating. The design team must identify the threat, the expected method of forced entry and the amount of delay required. A window beside a classroom, a sidel lite at a controlled entrance and an interior vision panel may have different exposure and response needs. “Security” can mean resisting impact, slowing penetration, retaining broken fragments or keeping an opening closed long enough for occupants and responders to act; those outcomes are not interchangeable.

The National Glass Association’s school-security paper describes delayed forced-entry options and summarizes standards for both glass-only and complete glazing-system testing. Its February 22, 2021 announcement identifies standards and guidance from ASTM International, ANSI Z97.1, CPSC 16 CFR 1201, CAN/CGSB, UL and FEMA. The announcement is a technical-resource overview, not a determination of the code adopted in a particular state or municipality. Teams should confirm the governing edition, test method and acceptance criteria with the authority having jurisdiction. Read the resource at the National Glass Association.

Fire and life safety

Educational buildings often require rated openings at corridors, stair enclosures, fire barriers and other designated locations. Fire-protection and fire-resistance requirements apply to the tested opening, not automatically to every piece of glass that appears in it. The glass, framing, glazing materials, door leaf, hinges, closer, latching device and adjacent construction may all be part of the listing or test evidence.

Technical Glass Products’ educational-settings guidance says daylight and visibility between spaces can support academic success, while fire and life safety remain critical in designated areas. It recommends proven, compatible components and advises involving a security expert when the project requires security performance as well as fire-rated materials. This is manufacturer guidance, so the architect and code consultant still need to verify the listing and jurisdictional requirements. The guidance is at Technical Glass Products.

Daylight, views and supervision

Transparent sidelites, interior windows and borrowed-light panels can make circulation areas easier to supervise and reduce dependence on electric lighting. They can also preserve a visual connection between classrooms and shared spaces. The security objective should not be achieved by making every opening opaque: sightlines can help staff understand what is happening outside a room and can support wayfinding.

Placement is as important as the glass specification. A vision panel that faces a public approach may need privacy control or a carefully considered line of sight. A low panel in a high-traffic corridor may face impact from carts and equipment. A high-level clerestory may provide daylight with less exposure to tampering. These are layout decisions that should be made before the glazing schedule is finalized.

How to compare glazing approaches

Bowman’s broader discussion of glazing trends includes security-rated glass, acoustic performance, timber curtain walls and hurricane-rated systems. Those categories are not substitutes for one another. Compare each option against the project requirements below rather than asking which “type” is best in the abstract.

Decision factor Question for the project team Why it changes the specification
Forced-entry resistance What threat, impact or entry method must be delayed, and for how long? Determines the relevant test method, glass construction and retention details.
Fire performance Is the opening required to provide fire protection or fire resistance? Sets the listing, glazing thickness, frame and compatible materials.
Assembly scope Was the complete window, curtain wall or door tested, or only the glass? A component rating does not automatically transfer to the whole opening.
Daylight and sightlines Where are visibility, supervision and glare control most valuable? Influences opening size, location, tint, coatings and interior layout.
Acoustics What separation is needed from gyms, cafeterias, traffic or mechanical rooms? May require laminated constructions, thicker units, airspace changes or a different frame.
Thermal and carbon performance What are the climate, orientation, solar-gain and operational targets? Coatings, insulating-glass configurations, shading and frame choices affect energy use.
Resilience Is the site exposed to hurricanes, severe storms or other extreme loads? Wind-borne-debris and pressure requirements can govern the system independently of security.
Compatibility and maintenance Can the specified glass, gaskets, sealants, stops, doors and hardware be installed and serviced together? Incompatible components can invalidate tested performance or create premature failures.

Glass types discussed in K–12 security conversations

An Allegion podcast listing from November 2025 identifies annealed, tempered, wired, laminated and acrylic glass as types discussed by Bowman. It notes that tempered and laminated glass are more commonly used in schools today, while emphasizing the need to coordinate codes, standards and the work of architects, administrators, first responders and the glass industry. The listing is at Allegion.

Annealed glass

Annealed glass is the basic float-glass form. When it breaks, it generally produces larger, sharper shards than safety-glazing products. Its use in a school opening therefore depends on location, impact risk and the applicable safety-glazing rules. It should not be treated as a security solution merely because it is installed in a thick pane.

Tempered glass

Tempered glass is heat-treated for greater resistance to thermal and mechanical stress than annealed glass. When it fails, it breaks into many smaller pieces rather than long sharp shards. Tempering improves safety in many locations, but it does not by itself provide a delayed forced-entry rating, a fire rating or a retained barrier after breakage.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass bonds two or more lites with an interlayer. After breakage, the interlayer can hold fragments together and may help maintain a barrier, depending on the construction and test. Different interlayers and thicknesses change acoustic, optical, structural and security performance. The project must use the construction covered by the applicable test or listing.

Wired glass

Wired glass has historically been used in some fire-rated locations, but the wire does not make an opening a complete fire or security assembly. Current code, safety-glazing rules and the particular listing govern where it may be used. Substituting it for another rated product without approval can create a compliance problem.

Acrylic and other plastics

Acrylic can be useful where low weight, fabrication flexibility or impact considerations are important. It has different fire, smoke, scratch, weathering and optical characteristics from glass. It should be evaluated against the same assembly, code and maintenance requirements rather than assumed to be equivalent to laminated or tempered glass.

Can one opening be both fire-rated and security-rated?

Sometimes, but only when the complete assembly has evidence for both requirements. A security-rated lite inserted into a fire-rated frame is not automatically a dual-rated opening, and a fire-rated pane does not automatically resist the forced-entry test needed for a school entrance.

  1. Define the opening’s role. Record whether it is in a fire barrier, smoke partition, exit route, secure vestibule, classroom, corridor or exterior wall.
  2. Identify each required performance. List the fire-protection or fire-resistance duration, forced-entry or impact objective, safety-glazing requirement, acoustic target, thermal criteria and wind or hurricane loads.
  3. Ask for assembly-level evidence. Obtain the listing or test report for the exact glass construction, framing, glazing materials, stops, seals, doors and hardware—not a brochure claim for one component.
  4. Coordinate substitutions before procurement. Changes in thickness, interlayer, frame depth, gasket, fastener or hardware can move the installation outside the tested configuration.
  5. Review with the authority having jurisdiction and specialists. The architect, fire-protection professional, security consultant, glazing contractor and code official should agree on the interpretation before the schedule is issued.

A practical workflow for safer, lower-impact school glazing

1. Map people, threats and operations

Start with entry sequencing, visitor screening, after-hours use, classroom occupancy, evacuation routes and first-responder access. A secure vestibule may need different glazing from an interior classroom panel. Include maintenance staff and administrators: a system that cannot be inspected, cleaned or repaired safely will not perform as intended over its service life.

2. Place daylight where it does the most work

Use orientation, clerestories, borrowed light and controlled interior vision panels to bring daylight into occupied spaces without creating unnecessary exposure. Pair transparent areas with shading, glare control and privacy measures where needed. The objective is useful light and supervision, not maximum glass area.

3. Set measurable performance requirements

Write the required standard, rating, duration, size range, edge condition and assembly in the specification. “Security glass” or “fire-rated glass” is too vague to coordinate procurement. Include the required documentation, approved manufacturers or systems where appropriate, and the process for reviewing substitutions.

4. Coordinate enclosure performance

Evaluate glazing with the wall, roof, shading and mechanical strategy. Low-emissivity coatings, insulating-glass units, thermally improved frames and exterior shading can reduce heat flow and solar load, but their effect depends on climate, orientation and operation. Acoustic laminates and thicker units may alter weight, hardware loads and frame requirements.

5. Verify installation and handover

Inspect setting blocks, edge clearances, gaskets, sealants, fasteners and door hardware against the approved assembly. Preserve labels, listings and maintenance information for facilities staff. Record the exact installed construction so a future replacement does not silently remove a required rating.

Where sustainability and resilience fit

Bowman’s 2024 Glass Magazine article links occupant experience with developments such as hurricane-rated systems, acoustic glazing and timber curtain walls. These are trend examples, not quantified performance guarantees. Their value depends on the building’s climate, structure, detailing and operation. The article also attributes an estimate to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that Americans spend 70% to 90% of their time indoors; the underlying EPA page was not available with the article, so the range should be treated as an attributed estimate rather than independently verified here. Read the article at Glass Magazine.

For an existing school, replacement decisions also have a carbon dimension. Bowman’s September 17, 2026 article reports, citing a 2024 National Center for Education Statistics report, that the average main instructional school building is 49 years old. Because the original NCES report was not retrieved for independent checking, treat that figure as an attributed statistic and verify it before using it in a capital plan. The article is at Glass Magazine.

In practice, retaining a sound frame and upgrading the infill may reduce demolition and disruption, while a failed or incompatible frame may justify a complete replacement. The right answer comes from an enclosure assessment, energy model, code review and life-cycle comparison—not from age alone.

Common specification failures and fixes

  • Failure: treating “security-rated” as a universal label. Fix: name the threat, test method, retention objective and assembly scope.
  • Failure: assuming fire-rated glass makes the opening fire-rated. Fix: verify the complete listed frame, glazing materials, doors and hardware.
  • Failure: selecting a product before locating the opening. Fix: map sightlines, impacts, egress, privacy, acoustics and solar exposure first.
  • Failure: changing an interlayer, gasket or frame during value engineering. Fix: require written confirmation that the revised configuration remains within the tested assembly.
  • Failure: optimizing daylight without glare, heat or acoustic analysis. Fix: coordinate glazing with shading, HVAC, room use and façade orientation.
  • Failure: leaving facilities staff without records. Fix: hand over listings, labels, cleaning limits, replacement details and inspection requirements.

What the Bowman perspective means for project teams

The useful takeaway is a design method, not a single product recommendation. Begin with the school’s threat model and code obligations, then preserve daylight and visual connection where they improve learning and supervision. Select a tested assembly whose glass, frame and hardware work together; add acoustic, thermal and storm requirements; and document the installed configuration for the next maintenance cycle. That sequence lets safety, sustainability and occupant well-being reinforce one another instead of competing at the last minute.
