Christmas lights can contribute to fire or electrical hazards, especially if a strand is damaged, used somewhere it is not rated for, connected against its instructions, or left on while everyone is asleep or away. Inspect each set, use products listed by a qualified testing laboratory, follow the manufacturer’s connection limits, and switch lights off before bed or leaving home.
How much fire risk do Christmas lights pose?
Christmas lights are a possible ignition hazard, but available fire statistics do not establish the chance that a particular light string will start a fire or provide a reliable annual count of fires caused by light strings alone.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that U.S. home structure fires caused by Christmas trees averaged 155 per year during 2018–2022. Those fires averaged four civilian deaths, seven civilian injuries and $15 million in direct property damage annually. The figures describe fires caused by Christmas trees, not fires caused by Christmas lights. In 41% of home Christmas-tree fires, the equipment involved was categorized as electrical distribution or lighting equipment—a broad category that should not be read as Christmas light strings alone. NFPA’s 2024 report on Christmas-tree fires provides the underlying scope and figures.
For scale, the U.S. Fire Administration estimated 24,200 residential-building electrical fires in 2021, resulting in 295 deaths, 900 injuries and more than $1.2 billion in property loss. That is general electrical-fire context, not a Christmas-light statistic. USFA’s electrical fire safety guidance covers those broader risks.

What makes a string of lights hazardous?
- Damage: Frayed, pinched, cut or bare wires; broken sockets; loose bulb connections; and damaged plugs can make a strand unsafe. USFA, NFPA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advise discarding defective lights rather than using them.
- Wrong location: A string marked for indoor use is not automatically suitable outdoors. Use lights labeled for the location where they will be installed.
- Improper connections or power: Connecting more strands than the manufacturer permits, overloading outlets or power strips, or using a cord that is not rated for its purpose can create electrical hazards.
- Unsafe outdoor installation: Wind can damage decorations or wiring. Use outdoor-rated equipment, GFCI-protected receptacles as advised by CPSC, and suitable supports that do not damage the wires.
- Nearby combustible materials: A dry Christmas tree and heat sources nearby can increase the consequences if ignition occurs. Tree precautions reduce this surrounding hazard; they do not repair a faulty light string.
How to check Christmas lights before using them
- Inspect the whole set. Before each season and again before installation, check wires, sockets, bulb connections and plugs. Discard a strand if you find pinching, fraying, exposed or cut wire, a cracked or broken socket, a loose connection or a damaged plug. Do not put a defective strand back into service.
- Check the safety listing and location label. Choose lights bearing a mark from a qualified testing laboratory, and confirm the packaging or product label says they are suitable for indoor or outdoor use as intended. NFPA recommends listed products; CPSC advises checking outdoor certification.
- Read the connection instructions. Follow the manufacturer’s stated limit for how many strands can be connected. Do not assume one universal limit applies to every product. CPSC’s older holiday handout gave a limit of three standard-size sets on one extension cord, but NFPA’s 2025 advice is to follow the product instructions.
- Check the power setup. Avoid overloading outlets and power strips. For outdoor lights, use cords rated for the intended use and GFCI-protected receptacles. Keep cords away from pinch points; USFA advises replacing damaged extension cords and not routing them under rugs or where they can be pinched.
- Secure outdoor strings carefully. Use supports appropriate to the installation and attach the lights without piercing, crushing or otherwise damaging their wiring. CPSC warns that wind can damage holiday decorations.
Should you leave Christmas lights on overnight or when you go out?
No. Turn Christmas tree lights off before going to bed and before leaving home. USFA puts it plainly: “Always unplug Christmas tree lights before going to bed or leaving your home.” NFPA gives the same core advice in its 2025 Christmas Tree Safety tip sheet. Switching them off limits the time a possible electrical fault can go unnoticed.
Does an LED string eliminate the fire risk?
No type of string should be treated as incapable of causing a fire. The available evidence here does not establish a reliable comparative fire rate for LED versus incandescent strings, or show that either type is categorically safer. Choose based on safety listing, indoor or outdoor rating, intact construction and the manufacturer’s connection instructions—not bulb type alone.

What else matters if the lights are on a tree?
Tree care addresses hazards around the lights. USFA recommends keeping a Christmas tree at least three feet from heat sources, watering a live tree daily and removing it when it becomes dry. NFPA likewise notes that tree fires are uncommon but can be serious. These precautions do not make a damaged or incorrectly installed light string safe.
