How Contractors Plan Concrete Work Around Hot Weather

Hot-weather concrete planning means coordinating mixture, delivery, placement, curing and inspection for the combined effects of temperature, wind, humidity and sun—not relying on one temperature cutoff.

Successful hot-weather concrete placement depends on planning the entire operation—not on checking the air temperature or relying on one maximum temperature. Contractors should coordinate the mixture, delivery, site conditions, crew readiness, placement, curing and inspection against the project documents and the day’s combined exposure to heat, wind, humidity and sun. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) offers technical guidance, but the project requirements and qualified project professionals determine the limits and procedures for a specific job.

Why hot-weather planning is about more than temperature

Hot weather can affect concrete before, during and after placement. Air temperature matters, but so do concrete temperature, relative humidity, wind and direct sun. Together, these conditions influence moisture loss, hardening, the time available for handling and the risk of cracking. A windy, sunny day can call for more precautions than a calm, humid day at the same air temperature.

That is why a calendar label such as “summer,” or a single weather-app temperature, cannot determine by itself whether a placement needs hot-weather controls. Conditions can vary across a site and change during the work. The planning question is how the full set of conditions will affect the approved mixture and the planned sequence from batching through curing.

ACI’s PRC-305-20: Guide to Hot Weather Concreting addresses the factors and operations contractors need to consider. ACI’s guidance says there is no single maximum ambient or concrete temperature that resolves every placement. It describes approximately 75–100°F (24–38°C) as a generally favorable concrete-temperature range for best results; that is general guidance, not a universal project limit or permission to disregard the specifications.

What should contractors check before pouring concrete in hot weather?

Start with the contract documents, then coordinate the work with the concrete producer and the responsible project professionals. Establish what the job requires for mixture approval, concrete temperature, acceptance, evaporation monitoring, curing, protection and inspection. Resolve questions before the placement is underway, including at the preplacement conference where applicable.

Review requirements and exposure together

  • Project documents: Identify the applicable specification provisions, approved mixture and job-specific temperature, testing, acceptance and curing requirements. Do not substitute a general ACI temperature range for a project requirement.
  • Weather and site exposure: Review forecast air temperature, relative humidity, wind and solar exposure alongside the expected concrete temperature. Consider the exposure where the concrete will be placed, not just conditions at the batch plant.
  • Work sequence: Check that the planned delivery, site handling, placement pace, finishing and curing can be coordinated for the expected conditions.
  • Responsibilities and evidence: Confirm who will monitor conditions, conduct required tests and inspections, decide whether acceptance criteria are met, and document the results.

ACI’s hot-weather specification, ACI 305.1-14, was reapproved in 2020. Its subject areas include the preplacement conference, mixture and temperature requirements, evaporation monitoring and controls, acceptance, curing and protection. The applicable contract documents still determine what is required on a particular job.

Make the go/no-go decision with the right people

Use the combined forecast and the project’s requirements to decide whether the planned mixture, delivery sequence, crew and controls are suitable. If conditions or proposed procedures raise a question about compliance or performance, refer it to the responsible project professional and concrete producer before placement. The available ACI guidance does not establish one evaporation threshold, universal instrument setup or temperature ceiling that can replace that project-specific decision.

How should the mixture and concrete temperature be planned?

Coordinate the temperature plan with the concrete producer and the professionals responsible for the approved mixture. ACI’s guide identifies material selection and mixture proportions, precooling ingredients, batching, delivery length and concrete temperature at placement as relevant planning topics. These are levers to evaluate together—not a recipe that can be applied unchanged to every mix or project.

Discuss the available planning levers

  • Materials and proportions: Confirm that the proposed mixture is approved for the work and meets the project’s requirements. Do not alter proportions or specify an admixture dosage based on a general hot-weather rule.
  • Precooling: Ask the producer whether precooling ingredients is appropriate and compatible with the qualified mixture and project requirements.
  • Batching and delivery: Coordinate batching and the expected haul with the planned placement sequence. Delivery length affects how the team manages the operation, but the reviewed ACI material does not establish a universal allowable wait or truck interval.
  • Temperature at placement: Establish how the job’s required temperature will be evaluated and accepted. ACI’s general favorable range of approximately 75–100°F (24–38°C) is not a substitute for the project’s specified limit or an agreed acceptance procedure.

Record the agreed mixture, temperature requirements and responsibilities in the project’s normal coordination and quality-control process. If a proposed cooling measure or mixture adjustment changes the approved plan, obtain the required project review rather than assuming that a lower temperature or a particular additive is automatically better.

How do wind, humidity and sun affect the placement?

Wind, relative humidity and solar exposure help determine how quickly moisture can leave exposed concrete surfaces. Their combined effect matters: identical air temperatures can present different surface-drying conditions on a breezy, sunny site and a sheltered, humid one. The crew should therefore assess likely exposure as part of the placement plan, rather than treating temperature as the only trigger for precautions.

ACI’s hot-weather specification topics include measuring surface evaporation rate and taking evaporation-control measures. The reviewed guidance does not support a universal evaporation threshold or a single instrument setup for all projects. Follow the contract requirements and use the qualified personnel and procedures designated for monitoring and inspection.

Agree on monitoring and response before the pour

Before placement, confirm which project requirements govern evaporation monitoring, who will perform it, and how the team will respond if observed conditions require a change. Make sure the decision-makers can coordinate any needed adjustment to the sequence, site controls or protection plan. Do not assume that a particular wind speed, humidity reading or air temperature alone establishes whether the work is acceptable.

How should contractors plan delivery and site logistics?

Delivery and site handling are part of the hot-weather plan because delay can disrupt the intended sequence. ACI’s guide identifies haul length, site facilities, concrete temperature at placement and handling as relevant considerations. The objective is to have the crew and site ready to receive, place and handle the approved concrete without avoidable interruptions.

Coordinate the route from arrival to placement

  1. Match delivery to readiness. Coordinate the anticipated haul and arrival sequence with the actual ability of the site and crew to receive concrete and proceed with placement.
  2. Check facilities and access. Confirm that planned site handling facilities, access and work areas are ready for the operation. Resolve site constraints that could create unnecessary delays before ordering the placement.
  3. Align crew roles and pace. Make sure the people responsible for placing, finishing, monitoring and curing understand the sequence and their responsibilities before concrete arrives.
  4. Plan for changing conditions. Check the expected weather exposure across the work period and identify who can make project-authorized decisions if conditions or timing change.

Do not invent a standard truck interval or allowable waiting time: neither is established by the reviewed ACI sources. Determine scheduling and acceptance requirements through the project documents and coordination with the producer and responsible project professionals.

How can a crew keep concrete from drying too quickly?

Plan moisture retention and curing before the placement begins. The curing method, its timing and the required protection should be coordinated with the project requirements and the expected exposure. A plan that depends on finding materials or deciding on a method after the concrete is already placed leaves the crew without a prepared response when protection is needed.

ACI cautions that high evaporation during water curing may lead to cracking due to evaporative cooling. It notes that steps such as using a plastic cover sheet can reduce evaporation. That is a useful option to consider with the project team, not a blanket instruction to use the same covering method in every circumstance. Select and apply the required curing and protection method in accordance with the approved project procedure.

Prepare curing and protection as part of the placement sequence

  • Confirm the approved curing method and any required duration in the project documents.
  • Arrange the materials and crew responsibilities needed to implement that method when required.
  • Consider how wind, humidity and sun exposure may affect moisture retention, including during water curing.
  • Coordinate inspection and documentation of curing and protection with the project’s quality requirements.

A 2013 ACI educational module based on ACI 305R-10 includes an approved curing method for at least seven days among its learning objectives. That dated learning objective is not established as a universal current requirement for every mixture or project. Use the applicable project documents for the actual curing method and duration.

How should teams compare hot-weather control approaches?

There is no single method that the reviewed ACI sources rank as best for every placement. Compare proposed approaches against the conditions and requirements of the specific job. The aim is a coordinated plan that controls the relevant risks while remaining compatible with the approved mixture and the project’s acceptance criteria.

Planning factor Question for the project team
Delivered and placed concrete temperature How will the required temperatures be achieved, measured and accepted under the project documents?
Haul and placement time Can the expected delivery and site sequence proceed without avoidable delay?
Wind, humidity, sun and surface exposure What monitoring and evaporation controls do the project requirements call for under the expected conditions?
Mixture compatibility Does the proposed approach preserve the approved mixture and its qualification?
Crew and site readiness Are facilities, people and responsibilities in place before the concrete arrives?
Curing and protection Can the specified method be started and maintained as required?
Inspection and acceptance Who will perform the required checks, and what evidence must be recorded?

Evaluate the whole sequence rather than judging a cooling or evaporation-control measure in isolation. A change that addresses one exposure but conflicts with mixture approval, delivery timing, curing or acceptance requirements may not be a suitable project solution.

What should be confirmed at the preplacement conference?

Use the conference to close coordination gaps while there is still time to adjust the plan. The project team should be able to identify the governing requirements, the expected conditions, the selected mixture and the people responsible for each decision and inspection.

  • Which contract documents and approved procedures govern temperature, acceptance, curing and protection?
  • How will the combined weather and site exposure be assessed, including surface evaporation monitoring if required?
  • What mixture, precooling or batching arrangements have been approved, and who authorizes any change?
  • How will haul, site handling, crew readiness and placement pace be coordinated?
  • What curing materials and protection are planned, and who implements them?
  • Who performs testing and inspection, and how are results and any project-authorized adjustments documented?

ACI materials are technical guidance for planning and specification development; they do not replace the project’s governing documents or qualified decisions for the work. Keeping that distinction clear helps the team use general guidance without mistaking it for a job-specific acceptance criterion.
