CERN is using heat from the Large Hadron Collider’s cooling system to supply a district-heating network in Ferney-Voltaire, France. The heat does not come directly from particle beams: hot water from equipment near LHC Point 8 transfers energy through heat exchangers into the town’s network. CERN says the system began supplying heat in mid-January 2026.
How does the LHC heat homes?
The LHC is a 27-kilometre particle accelerator with eight surface points. Near Ferney-Voltaire, cooling equipment at Point 8 produces hot water as it removes heat from accelerator installations. Ordinarily, that water would pass through cooling towers, which release the heat into the atmosphere before the cooled water returns to the equipment.
In the new arrangement, the hot water passes through two heat exchangers rated at 5 MW each. They transfer thermal energy to the town’s district-heating network without sending CERN’s cooling water into the homes’ heating system. The network was inaugurated on 12 December; CERN reported that heat supply began in mid-January 2026. CERN’s project report, published 28 January 2026, describes the installation.
How much heat does it provide?
CERN says Ferney-Voltaire is currently using up to 5 MW of recovered heat. With both exchangers available while the accelerators are fully operational, the theoretical capacity could be about twice that. Capacity is not the same as a constant supply: actual heat depends on the accelerator’s operating state and the town’s demand.

CERN describes the network’s output as equivalent to heating several thousand homes, but does not specify a home count or a standard household energy-use assumption. The figure should therefore be read as an approximate equivalent, not a guarantee that a fixed number of homes will be heated year-round.
What happens during the LHC shutdown?
The connection is expected to keep supplying heat through most of Long Shutdown 3, the accelerator’s multi-year maintenance period. CERN estimates a range of 1–5 MW during the shutdown, with five months spread across that period when the supply will not be available. Some Point 8 installations still need cooling while the accelerator is shut down, allowing heat recovery to continue. The exact output varies with operating conditions.

What does the project mean for energy use and emissions?
Recovering this heat puts energy that would otherwise be rejected through cooling towers to a local use, displacing traditional heating sources such as gas. CERN says the project will avoid thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions, without giving a specific total or time period in its report.
The Ferney-Voltaire connection is part of a wider CERN effort. Its Prévessin Data Centre, inaugurated in 2024, has a heat-recovery system intended to warm most buildings at that site from winter 2026/2027. CERN also describes a future project to recover heat from LHC Point 1 cooling towers for buildings on the Meyrin site. Taken together, the initiatives are expected by CERN to save 25–30 GWh per year from 2027; that estimate covers the combined projects, not the Ferney-Voltaire system alone.

Can waste heat from other industrial or research sites be reused?
Yes, when a suitable heat source can be connected to nearby demand and provide useful heat reliably. For projects such as this, the practical questions are the temperature and availability of the waste heat, how much can be recovered, how far it must travel to reach the network, and whether demand changes with the seasons. Planners also need to account for backup heat during outages or shutdowns and confirm that recovery does not interfere with the facility’s primary research or industrial purpose.
