Orientation, glazing, exterior and interior shading, room finishes, and occupant controls all affect how comfortable and useful an office façade will be. The right combination depends on the building’s climate, site, and workspaces.
Why daylight, views, glare, and solar heat must be designed together
These are related but distinct results of a façade. A window can admit daylight and provide a view while also letting in direct sun that causes glare or adds unwanted heat. More glass does not automatically mean a brighter, more comfortable, or more energy-efficient office.
The design aim is useful, controlled light: enough daylight for work, without harsh sun patches or strong visual contrast, while preserving views where they matter. In its zero-energy-building guidance, the U.S. Department of Energy says good daylighting should provide at least 300 lux for at least 50% of operating hours while limiting direct sunlight in regularly occupied spaces. This is contextual DOE guidance, not a universal code requirement. DOE: ZEB Technologies—Lighting & Daylighting.
Start with the site, orientation, and office layout
Before setting window sizes or choosing shades, architects assess which directions the main façades face, how nearby buildings or landscape features affect sunlight, and which tasks will take place near windows. Climate, ceiling height, fenestration, shading, and view requirements all influence the façade strategy.

East- and west-facing glass can be difficult to shade and may produce uneven daylight, according to DOE guidance. The sun’s lower angle at those exposures makes project-specific sun-path and energy analysis especially useful. These are planning considerations, not a substitute for analysis of the actual site and building. DOE: ZEB Technologies—Building Envelope & Architectural Considerations.
Admit and distribute useful daylight
Window area and placement affect both daylight availability and solar gain. The goal is not simply to make the perimeter bright; it is to distribute light into occupied parts of the office without creating glare or excessive heat. Room finishes help: lighter ceilings and walls can reflect daylight farther into a space, as DOE notes in its daylighting guidance.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Daylight does not guarantee energy savings. The result depends on window performance, heating and cooling loads, electric-light controls, and how occupants operate shades. Daylight harvesting—adjusting electric lighting in response to available daylight—can be part of an efficient lighting strategy, but it must work with the façade and actual room use. DOE: ZEB Technologies—Lighting & Daylighting.
Preserve views while controlling direct sun
A window can provide an outdoor view, admit daylight, support natural ventilation, and contribute passive solar heating in cold conditions. Those functions can compete: a shade that blocks glare may also obstruct the view and reduce daylight, while clear glazing can leave occupants exposed to direct sun or bright reflected surfaces.

Some shading approaches can retain more of the view than a fully closed blind. DOE’s sustainable-design guide describes fine-mesh roll screens that reduce illumination and glare while maintaining visual contact with the outdoors. Sill-up screens or louvers can shade the lower portion of a window while leaving upper glazing available for daylight. The appropriate arrangement depends on façade geometry and the view occupants need. DOE/Los Alamos National Laboratory: Sustainable Design Guide, Chapter 4—The Building Architectural Design.
Choose shading for exposure and everyday operation
Exterior shading intercepts sunlight before it reaches the glass. Depending on the orientation and design, options include overhangs, fins, louvers, and screens. Interior shades can help manage glare, but the older DOE sustainable-design guide characterizes their solar-control potential as limited compared with exterior shading. Interior shades also depend on occupants or control systems being adjusted as conditions change.

That reliance is a design risk, not a prediction about every occupant: if adjustable blinds are closed and left in place, they can reduce later daylight and views. Designers should account for realistic operation when specifying controls and deciding how much the building depends on manual adjustment. DOE: ZEB Technologies—Building Envelope & Architectural Considerations.
How common options differ
| Option | Typical role | Trade-offs to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed exterior shading | Blocks or reduces direct sun before it reaches the glass. | Performance depends on orientation and geometry; assess daylight distribution, view access, and seasonal sun exposure. |
| Interior shades | Give occupants or controls a way to manage glare at the window. | Can obstruct views and reduce daylight when closed; the older DOE guide describes their solar-control potential as limited. |
| Exterior screens or louvers | Can reduce direct sun and glare while retaining some view or upper-window daylight, depending on placement and design. | Assess view quality, privacy, daylight, solar control, and project-specific installation and maintenance needs. |
| Dynamic glazing or automated shading | Changes solar control as conditions vary during the day or year. | Requires decisions about controls and integration; DOE identifies these as research and design areas but does not establish universal payback, savings, or project thresholds. |
DOE discusses dynamic solar control and research on electrochromic windows and dynamic shading in its window overview. DOE: Windows.

Compare façade choices with project-specific analysis
Evaluate alternatives against the same project conditions rather than choosing by appearance or a single performance measure. A useful comparison considers:
- Orientation and seasonal sun exposure.
- Useful daylight distribution and glare risk.
- Heat gain and likely cooling implications.
- View quality, privacy, and the needs of work areas near windows.
- How occupants will adjust or rely on controls.
- Installation, maintenance, and cost.
Building energy modeling can help evaluate architectural decisions, including daylight harvesting and static or dynamic shading. DOE’s architectural-design use case describes modeling as a way to examine design choices. Use analysis early enough to inform massing and façade decisions, then check the proposal against local codes and climate-specific requirements. DOE: Building Energy Modeling 101—Architectural Design Use Case.
What research says about views, daylight, and productivity
Daylight and views are often presented as ways to improve productivity, but the available reviews do not support a dependable, general productivity claim. A 2022 critical review selected 76 studies on occupant responses to window views, daylighting, and lighting; its authors report that variation in methods and measurements produced inconclusive findings or results limited to particular studies. A 2021 systematic review of office and educational buildings also identified gaps in how research was distributed across study types and lighting conditions.
These reviews support treating daylight and views as design considerations, not promising a specific productivity increase. Vasquez et al., “Occupants’ responses to window views, daylighting and lighting in buildings: A critical review,” Building and Environment, 2022; Vasquez et al., “Effects of indoor lighting conditions and window views on occupants’ well-being and behavior: a systematic review,” 2021.
