How and When to Deadhead Mum Flowers for Weeks of Extra Color

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deadhead chrysanthemums, or mums, as soon as individual flowers begin to fade. Remove the spent bloom or finished flower cluster by tracing its stem down to the next healthy leaf set, side shoot, or unopened bud, then make a clean cut just above it. Repeat the inspection every few days or about once a week while the plant is blooming.

This keeps the plant looking fresh and can encourage additional buds, sometimes extending the display by weeks. It is not a guarantee of a second full flush or a fixed number of extra weeks: cultivar, weather, temperature, moisture, disease, artificial light, and frost all affect how long mums flower.

What deadheading does for mums

Deadheading is the removal of flowers that have finished blooming. On mums, the faded blooms may turn brown, shrivel, lose their color, or simply look less fresh than the surrounding flowers and buds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing those flowers improves the plant’s appearance and prevents the display from being dominated by declining blooms. Regular deadheading can also encourage new buds and extend the overall period of color. The effect is most useful when fresh flowers and unopened buds are still developing on the plant.

Deadheading does not change every factor that controls mum flowering. Chrysanthemums are short-day—or, more precisely, long-night—plants. Their flowering response depends partly on cultivar and day length. Bright artificial light near the plant can delay or disrupt flowering, and cool weather or frost can end the display regardless of how carefully you remove spent flowers.

When to deadhead mum flowers

Start when individual blooms begin to fade

Do not wait until the entire plant looks tired. Begin when petals are browning, shriveling, losing their original color, or no longer look fresh. Leave nearby flowers that are still attractive and protect unopened buds.

Check the plant regularly during bloom

Inspect flowering mums every few days when the weather is warm, rainy, or windy, or about once a week under slower conditions. The best interval depends on the cultivar and how quickly its flowers decline. A brief, regular inspection is safer than a single heavy pruning session because you can remove only what has finished.

Continue deadheading while the mum is actively flowering and there are worthwhile buds or flowers remaining. Once the plant has finished its seasonal display, stop treating it as a continuously flowering plant and move on to frost and winter care.

How to deadhead mums without removing healthy buds

  1. Find a clearly fading flower. Do not remove a bloom merely because it is older than its neighbors. Look for browning, shriveling, faded color, or a visibly declining cluster.
  2. Look closely for concealed buds. Unopened mum buds can be hidden among spent flowers. This is why indiscriminate shearing is risky.
  3. Trace the flower stem downward. Follow the individual stem until you reach the next healthy leaf set, lateral bud, or side shoot.
  4. Remove the spent flower. Pinch off a soft, tender flower with your fingers, or use a sharp bypass pruner when the stem is firm.
  5. Make the cut just above healthy growth. Leave the healthy leaf, bud, or side shoot in place. Avoid cutting far down into green stems or removing more foliage than necessary.
  6. Handle clusters in stages. For spray-type mums, remove individual faded flowers when practical. When the whole cluster or its flower stem has finished, cut that stem back to just above a healthy leaf or bud.
  7. Remove unhealthy material appropriately. Put diseased or visibly infected plant material in the trash or other appropriate waste rather than adding it to home compost, where it may contribute to future disease problems.

What the correct cut looks like

The aim is a small, selective cut—not a flat-topped plant. The cut should remove the spent flower and its unnecessary stem while preserving green foliage and developing buds below it.

If you cannot clearly distinguish a faded flower from a developing bud, wait and inspect it again rather than cutting. A healthy unopened bud is more valuable to the display than a perfectly uniform outline.

Why you should not shear a flowering mum

Shearing means cutting the whole top of the plant to a similar height. That may be appropriate for some other maintenance tasks at specific times, but it is a poor substitute for deadheading a mum that is currently displaying flowers.

Unopened buds may be concealed among faded flowers. A shearing cut can remove those buds along with the spent blooms, shorten the display, and strip away healthy foliage that the plant still needs. Follow individual stems instead, especially when the plant contains a mixture of fresh flowers, faded flowers, and buds.

Deadheading, pinching, and winter cutback are different

Operation When it happens Purpose
Deadheading During flowering, as blooms fade Improves appearance and may encourage additional buds
Pinching Spring and early summer, before flowering Encourages branching, a stockier shape, and more flowering stems
Post-frost cutback After flowering and according to local winter practice Seasonal cleanup and preparation for dormancy

Pinching young mums

Pinching is not the removal of a faded flower. It means removing the growing tip of a young shoot before the plant flowers. This encourages side branching and can produce a fuller, more compact mum.

Guidance varies slightly by source and region. One common approach is to begin when young plants reach about 20 cm (8 inches), then pinch developing side shoots until around mid-summer. Other extension guidance begins at approximately 6 inches and recommends a final pinch by late June or early July. The important principle is timing: stop well before flower initiation so the plant has time to develop buds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not apply a spring pinching schedule automatically to a mum purchased already covered with flowers. A greenhouse-forced florist mum may not have received the same training schedule as a garden-planted perennial, and pinching a flowering plant can remove the display you bought it for.

Post-frost cutback

Cutting back old stems after flowering or after a hard frost is winter cleanup, not deadheading. There is no single rule that suits every mum, climate, or site.

Some guidance recommends leaving dormant top growth in place through winter and removing it in spring. The old stems can provide some physical protection while the plant is dormant. Other regional recommendations cut stems after flowering or after frost. Consider the mum’s hardiness, drainage, exposure, local winter temperatures, and whether it is a reliably hardy garden type before choosing.

Do not treat a florist mum in a decorative pot as automatically equivalent to a hardy garden mum. Greenhouse-forced pot mums may survive outdoors in some situations, but deadheading alone cannot make one reliably perennial. Winter survival depends on the plant’s genetics, acclimation, planting time, drainage, and local conditions.

Why some mums produce more color after deadheading

When a fading flower is removed, the plant is no longer spending energy maintaining that finished flower and seed-producing structure. In suitable conditions, it may redirect resources toward existing buds or additional flowers. Removing declining blooms also allows developing flowers to receive more light and prevents the plant from looking finished before the remaining buds open.

Results vary. A healthy garden mum with many unopened buds may give a noticeably longer display. A mature florist mum near the end of its programmed bloom period may produce little additional color. Heat, heavy rain, drought stress, disease, shade, and an approaching frost can all limit the benefit.

Artificial light is another easily overlooked factor. Because mums respond to long nights, a porch light, security lamp, or other nearby illumination can interfere with normal flower initiation or timing. Deadheading will not correct that underlying problem.

Tool choice and hygiene

Use clean, sharp bypass pruners for small, firm flower stems. Bypass blades pass one another and generally make a cleaner cut than anvil-style tools that compress the stem. Keep the blades sharp; dull pruners can crush tissue and make grooming unnecessarily difficult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For routine removal of healthy blooms from one healthy plant, basic clean tools are usually sufficient. If you cut diseased tissue or move between visibly unhealthy plants, first remove dirt and plant residue, then disinfect the blades between cuts or plants. A 70% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol product is commonly used for this purpose. Follow the product label and handle alcohol safely because it is flammable and may irritate skin or eyes.

For gardeners who maintain pruners over many seasons, a pruner sharpener or replacement blade can help keep cuts clean. Replace damaged tools rather than forcing a blade that is bent, loose, or crushing stems.

Common mum-deadheading mistakes

  • Cutting healthy buds: Inspect the stem and surrounding flowers before making the cut.
  • Shearing the whole plant: Remove individual faded flowers or finished stems instead of flattening the top.
  • Removing green foliage: During flowering, preserve healthy leaves unless they are diseased or damaged.
  • Pinching at the wrong time: Spring and early-summer pinching is a shaping technique; it is not a late-season substitute for deadheading.
  • Pruning aggressively after flowering: Once the display is over, allow the plant to enter dormancy and follow a winter-care approach suited to the local climate.
  • Expecting a guaranteed rebloom: Deadheading can encourage more flowers, but it cannot guarantee a second flush, a particular number of weeks, or winter survival.
  • Assuming every potted mum is hardy: Florist mums and hardy garden mums differ in breeding, production, and overwintering performance.

A simple mum-deadheading checklist

  • Wait until the flower is clearly fading.
  • Check for unopened buds hidden nearby.
  • Trace the flower stem to the next healthy leaf, bud, or side shoot.
  • Pinch or make a clean bypass-pruner cut just above that growth.
  • Remove finished clusters rather than shearing the entire plant.
  • Inspect every few days or weekly while the mum is blooming.
  • Disinfect tools when cutting diseased tissue or moving between unhealthy plants.
  • After the final flowers, switch from display maintenance to climate-appropriate winter care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I deadhead mums with my fingers?

Yes. Fingers work well for soft, tender flower stems. Use clean bypass pruners when stems are firmer or when pinching would tear the plant.

How often should mums be deadheaded?

Inspect them every few days during warm or wet weather, or about once a week under slower conditions. Remove flowers as they clearly fade rather than waiting for the entire plant to finish.

Will deadheading make mums bloom again next year?

No. Deadheading may extend the current display, but it does not guarantee reblooming or winter survival. Hardy garden mums and greenhouse-forced florist mums also differ significantly in their ability to overwinter.

Should I cut mums back after they flower?

It depends on the mum, climate, and local winter practice. Some gardeners leave dormant stems until spring; others cut them after flowering or after a hard frost. Make this decision separately from in-season deadheading.

The Bottom Line

Deadhead mums selectively: remove each clearly faded flower or finished cluster just above healthy foliage or an unopened bud. Repeat throughout the bloom period, protect developing flowers, and avoid shearing the plant. When flowering ends, stop deadheading and use a winter-care strategy suited to the mum and your climate.
