If you are traveling, check your airport’s current construction information and airline instructions before you leave, then follow designated routes and ask airport staff for help if a path is unclear or inaccessible.
Why airport construction needs more than a fence
Airport construction can affect two different environments. Airside work takes place near aircraft operations, taxiways or other restricted areas, where a work zone can create hazards for pilots, vehicles and airport operations. Terminal and curbside projects affect passengers more directly: they can close familiar doors, corridors, elevators, escalators, ticket counters, crosswalks or vehicle lanes.

The safety challenge is not simply to keep people away from tools and machinery. Construction changes how people move through a place they may already know. A usual entrance may be closed, a curbside lane may be narrowed, or a route that once had an elevator may require a different accessible path. Controls have to make the boundary visible and give people a usable route around it.
Details vary by airport and by project phase. An entrance, curb or elevator listed as available today may change as work progresses, so a prior trip or an old map is not a reliable guide to current access.

How airports plan construction around ongoing operations
For U.S. airports, the Federal Aviation Administration’s Advisory Circular (AC) 150/5370-2G, issued December 13, 2017, addresses operational safety during airport construction. The FAA’s listing identifies it as active. It is guidance for airport construction operations, not a universal law for every airport and not a passenger checklist.
The planning framework is to coordinate construction with airport activity before work begins and to manage hazards as the job changes. FAA construction resources include material on closures and opening or reopening areas, taxiway checklists, construction notices, NOTAMs and hazard mitigation. These tools are relevant to airport operators and project teams coordinating airside work; passengers do not need to interpret them to find a terminal detour.
Phasing keeps work and operations coordinated
A project may be divided into phases so that particular areas can close while other routes or facilities remain in use. The specific sequence depends on the project. For travelers, phasing can mean that a route changes more than once: a temporary entrance or crossing may be available during one stage and then move as work advances.

Airside hazards require airport-specific controls
FAA guidance addresses construction signs and barricades for airport environments, as well as airfield hazards such as excavations in taxiway safety areas subject to restrictions. Airside signs and barricades have aviation-specific requirements. Ordinary consumer or retail equipment should not be assumed suitable for those areas; selection and use belong to airport operators and project teams working under applicable airport requirements.
For passengers, the practical takeaway is simpler: respect restricted-area boundaries and never treat an airside work zone as a shortcut. The controls used on an airfield are not interchangeable with the temporary barriers around a public terminal corridor.
How work areas are separated from passenger routes
Physical barriers help show where a public path ends and construction begins. Eindhoven Airport’s passenger construction guidance says work areas are fenced off with barriers or walls and directs travelers to designated routes. A clear boundary makes it easier to recognize that a passage is closed, rather than assume that an opening in a fence or a gap beside equipment is an invitation to pass through.
Separation works best when it is paired with a route that is visible and understandable. A barrier without clear directions can leave travelers unsure where to go; directions that lead toward an unprotected work area are not useful. Airports therefore need to coordinate the boundary, the temporary path and the information that tells passengers how to reach it.

- Stay on the signed public route and outside barriers, walls and closed areas.
- Do not cross through a work zone, even if it appears quiet or offers a shorter path.
- If a route ends at a closure or the signs conflict, ask airport staff rather than guessing.
How airports communicate changing routes
Construction can alter the way to the terminal as well as the way through it. Depending on the phase, travelers may encounter a relocated entrance, a closed bridge or escalator, an alternate elevator, a moved airline counter, a changed drop-off point or a partial lane closure. Airports may communicate these changes through posted wayfinding, construction pages, interactive maps and staff assistance.
Denver International Airport’s construction page illustrates the variety of terminal changes a project can involve: it describes a south bridge and escalator closure, elevator alternatives and relocated airline ticket counters, and directs passengers to signs, an interactive map and airport staff for help. These are project-specific details, not a universal layout or set of closures.
For curbside work, the route may involve both pedestrians and vehicles. In a notice dated March 26, 2026, Denver International Airport described phased crosswalk work, partial lane closures and redirection between terminal sides. It said wayfinding signs would be in place inside and outside the terminal and staff would be available to answer questions. This example shows why a traveler should check both terminal directions and the latest instructions for vehicle access.

A detour is not usable by everyone simply because it is open. A route that depends on stairs may not work for someone using a wheelchair, and a closed elevator can change how a person reaches a terminal level or aircraft boarding point. Accessibility needs to be considered while construction is active, not just in the permanent design of the airport.

Eindhoven Airport describes an alternative route and staff assistance for passengers with reduced mobility when a temporary staircase may be used. Its guidance also invites travelers who did not arrange assistance in advance to tell staff. The example is airport-specific, but it demonstrates two useful features of a construction plan: a defined alternative route and a way to ask for help if arrangements have not been made.
In the Canadian context, Canadian Transportation Agency guidance says temporary hazards should be identifiable, colour contrasted and cane detectable, and that a path under repair should remain wide enough for wheelchair travel. These points are jurisdiction-specific guidance, not a global legal standard. Requirements and available assistance depend on location and project.
If you need a step-free route or other assistance, check the airport’s current construction and accessibility information before traveling when possible. At the airport, tell staff what route or help you need if the signed detour does not work for you. Do not assume a nearby staircase has an elevator alternative unless airport information or staff confirm the route.
What passengers should do before and during a trip
Before leaving for the airport
- Check the airport’s current construction page for closures, alternate entrances, elevator or escalator changes and curbside directions.
- Check your airline’s current instructions for the correct terminal door, ticket-counter location, drop-off area or pickup point.
- If you require an accessible route or assistance, look for the airport’s current instructions and contact or speak to staff if the information does not explain a workable route.
Once you arrive
- Follow the signs for the designated entrance, corridor, crossing or elevator route, even if it differs from the way you usually travel.
- Stay outside barriers and closed areas; do not use a construction passage as a shortcut.
- Ask airport staff for directions if signs are hard to follow, a route appears blocked, or you need an accessible alternative.
Allow for the possibility that access may differ from your last visit. Checking updated instructions is particularly useful when your plan depends on a particular terminal entrance, curbside location, elevator or crossing.

What airport signage studies do—and do not—show
A 2015 Federal Aviation Administration William J. Hughes Technical Center study involved 131 vehicle operators and pilots evaluating temporary safety-orange airport construction sign concepts. The FAA research page reports that participants found the messages, character heights and colors comprehensible, conspicuous and adequate to alert them to existing construction.
The finding concerns airfield sign concepts and the people who evaluated them. It is not a passenger injury statistic, does not establish how many injuries airport construction controls prevent, and does not demonstrate a measured reduction in injuries. No reliable airport-wide figure quantifying passenger injuries prevented by construction-zone controls is established here.
Airport examples are snapshots, not permanent directions
Eindhoven Airport’s passenger guidance describes temporarily relocated terminal entrance and exit points, signed designated routes, and work areas fenced with barriers or walls. It also describes an alternative route and staff assistance for passengers with reduced mobility when a temporary staircase affects access to aircraft. The airport says its wider terminal expansion is expected to finish in 2027; that is a project estimate and may change.

Denver International Airport’s terminal construction information describes particular closures and alternatives, while its March 26, 2026 curbside notice describes a separate phased crosswalk project. These examples show how airports can communicate route changes, but neither should be treated as a current direction for a different airport—or as a guarantee that a specific route remains open today. Always use the airport’s latest project information for your own trip.
