How AI Is Reshaping Advanced Video Analytics: Edge, Cloud and Practical Deployment Choices

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AI video analytics is automated interpretation of camera footage. Deep-learning models classify images, detect objects, segment scenes and flag events, turning a stream that once required continuous human attention into searchable, event-driven data. The processing can happen inside a camera, on a recorder or dedicated appliance, in a cloud service, or across a hybrid design.

For construction companies and other organizations, the important question is not whether AI is “infiltrating” every camera system. It is whether a proposed deployment has evidence for the exact task, fits the existing video and network architecture, protects people’s information and gives staff a reliable way to review and act on alerts.

What AI video analytics actually does

Traditional video surveillance records pixels for a person to watch later. AI video analytics adds software that interprets those pixels automatically. The core computer-vision workloads highlighted in the 2024 Complexities in the Global Security Market: 2024 through 2026 report from ASIS International and the Security Industry Association are already well understood and have pretrained models available.

Image classification

Classification assigns a label to an image or video region, such as “hard hat,” “vehicle” or “open flame.” It answers what is present, but not necessarily where every item is or what it is doing.

Object detection

Detection locates items with bounding boxes and labels. A system might identify people, forklifts, trucks or helmets and then apply a rule, such as creating an alert when a person enters a restricted zone.

Semantic segmentation

Segmentation labels pixels by category. It can distinguish roadway, floor, equipment or sky and is useful when the shape or exact area of a scene matters more than a simple box around an object.

Higher-level applications combine these capabilities with timestamps, zones, schedules and business rules. A “worker in a danger area” alert, for example, requires detection, location, a defined zone and a decision about when the event is important enough to notify someone. The model is only one part of the finished system.

How quickly is adoption moving?

Several recent industry reports show strong interest, but their figures describe forecasts, respondent priorities or expectations—not universal adoption or independently measured accuracy.

Measure Reported figure What it means
Embedded deep-learning analytics in network-camera and recorder revenue More than 60% forecast for 2027, compared with 44% in 2023 An Omdia forecast cited by ASIS International and the Security Industry Association in their 2024 report; 2027 is a projection, not a reported result.
Partners naming AI and generative AI as a major trend 62% Axis Communications’ 2025 report of its 2024 survey, based on roughly 4,900 sales-channel responses from 68 countries.
End customers naming AI and generative AI as a major trend 34% Axis’ 2025 report, based on around 900 end-customer responses from 64 countries plus 11 in-depth interviews.
End customers naming cybersecurity, risk and privacy as a major trend 61% The same Axis survey; it shows that governance concerns are moving alongside AI interest.
Expected cloud adoption in physical security 27% rising to 44% within two years An expectation reported by Axis Communications in 2026 from proprietary research, not a measured universal market share.
AI as a top project priority for 2026 Ranked alongside access control and video surveillance Genetec’s 2025 report announcement, based on a survey conducted from August 18 to September 15, 2025.

Mats Thulin, Director of AI and Analytics Solutions at Axis Communications, called AI “one of the most powerful and transformative technologies within the video surveillance industry today.” That is a vendor executive’s characterization, not an independent performance finding. Taken together, the numbers indicate momentum and investment priorities while leaving the outcome of any particular camera, site or model to be demonstrated.

Where the video is processed

Processing location determines how much video moves across the network, how quickly an alert can be produced, what happens during an internet outage and who controls stored footage. No single architecture is categorically best.

Architecture How it works Operational implications
Camera edge The camera runs the model and sends events, metadata or selected clips to a recorder or platform. Can reduce upstream bandwidth and support fast local decisions. Camera hardware, firmware support and power limits constrain model choice.
Recorder or on-premises appliance One recorder or dedicated device analyzes feeds from multiple cameras at the site. Centralizes model management and may reuse existing cameras, but requires local compute capacity, maintenance and physical protection.
Cloud Video or extracted streams are sent to a hosted service for inference, search and storage. Offers centralized scaling and remote access, while making connectivity, data-transfer costs, retention settings and provider security controls critical.
Hybrid edge/cloud Immediate detection runs locally; selected metadata, clips or recordings go to cloud systems for broader search, storage or fleet-wide analysis. Balances responsiveness and scale, but creates a more complex integration and policy boundary.

Axis has described hybrid edge/cloud designs as an emerging approach: local processing can provide responsiveness while cloud systems add scale and storage. A construction site with intermittent connectivity might therefore keep safety rules on the camera or local appliance and synchronize event clips when a connection is available.

How an AI analytics event is produced

  1. Capture: A camera records a scene at a chosen resolution, frame rate and field of view. Mounting height, lens selection, lighting and weather determine what the model can actually see.
  2. Pre-process: Software may resize frames, correct images or discard frames that are not needed for the selected rule.
  3. Infer: The model classifies, detects or segments objects. It returns labels, locations and confidence values rather than a human explanation.
  4. Apply context: Zones, schedules, direction of travel, dwell time and combinations of detections turn raw model output into an event rule.
  5. Filter and notify: Thresholds and suppression windows reduce repeated alerts. The system can send a message, create a video-management bookmark or trigger another workflow.
  6. Review and improve: A person checks representative events, records false alarms and missed events, and adjusts camera position, lighting, rules or model settings.

This pipeline explains why a model’s advertised capability cannot be treated as a guaranteed site result. A camera pointed into glare, dust, rain or a crowded work area can produce different results from a controlled demonstration.

Where organizations are applying it

Security and site protection

Detection of people or vehicles can support perimeter monitoring, after-hours rules, intrusion investigation and faster video search. Analytics can prioritize a small set of events for a guard or site manager instead of requiring a continuous watch of every feed.

Worker safety

Rules can be designed around restricted zones, proximity to moving equipment, occupancy limits or personal protective equipment. Safety alerts should be treated as decision support: a supervisor still needs a defined response, a way to verify the scene and a procedure for cases the model cannot see.

Business intelligence and operational efficiency

Aggregated counts, dwell times, queue lengths and movement patterns can help organizations understand how spaces and equipment are used. These outputs are useful only when camera placement, sampling periods and definitions are documented; a count from an occluded camera is not automatically a reliable productivity measure.

Quality inspection

AI can compare products or work against visual criteria and flag items for human inspection. Axis’ 2026 report cites BMW Group’s AI-driven quality inspection as an industrial example. That example establishes a reported use case, not a promise that an inspection model will perform the same way on every construction material, fabrication line or lighting condition.

How to judge accuracy without being misled

There is no single accuracy number for “AI video surveillance.” Performance depends on the exact class being detected, camera angle, resolution, lighting, weather, occlusion, movement, threshold and the cost of a false alarm versus a missed event.

Ask a supplier or integrator for evidence from the intended environment, not just a product demonstration:

  • How were false positives and missed events measured, and over what time period?
  • Were tests performed at the planned mounting height, field of view and night-time lighting?
  • What happens when people overlap, wear unusual clothing, or partially leave the frame?
  • Can staff review the original clip and the model’s reason for creating an alert?
  • What threshold changes are available, and how do they affect alert volume?

The industry figures cited above do not provide independent, cross-vendor benchmarks for these metrics. Comparative claims should therefore be tied to a documented pilot or an independent evaluation of the exact use case.

A deployment plan for a construction site

1. Define the decision, not just the object

Write the action the system should support: for example, “notify the night supervisor when a person enters the excavation exclusion zone for more than 10 seconds.” This is more testable than “use AI to improve safety.” Define who receives the alert, during which hours and what evidence is required before action.

2. Survey the scene and existing equipment

Map camera views, blind spots, network links, power, recording capacity and lighting changes. Confirm whether current cameras expose the resolution, frame rate and software interfaces required by the proposed analytics. A generic IP camera does not automatically provide AI analytics.

3. Choose a processing location

Use edge processing when low latency, limited uplink capacity or local operation is important. Consider an on-premises appliance when several existing cameras need centralized analysis. Consider cloud processing when remote management, elastic capacity or centralized search outweigh connectivity and data-governance demands. A hybrid design can keep urgent rules local and move selected data to the cloud.

5. Set operating and retention rules

Document who can view live video, export clips, change thresholds and administer models. Set retention by purpose, restrict access by role and record administrative changes. Decide whether metadata can be retained longer than video and how a request to remove or disclose footage will be handled.

6. Measure after launch

Review alert counts, response times, missed incidents and system availability at agreed intervals. Recheck performance after camera moves, lighting changes, new machinery or a change in site layout. Treat model updates as operational changes that require a new validation sample.

Privacy, cybersecurity and accountability

Video can identify or reveal people, routines, vehicles and work practices. The legal obligations depend on the jurisdiction, the purpose of processing and the people captured; the industry reports cited here do not establish a universal compliance rule. Obtain advice for the countries and contracts involved rather than assuming that a security label removes privacy duties.

  • Purpose limitation: State whether footage is used for security, safety, operations or inspection, and avoid quietly expanding the purpose.
  • Access control: Use individual accounts, least-privilege roles and strong authentication for cameras, recorders, cloud consoles and exported clips.
  • Network security: Segment cameras, change default credentials, patch firmware and restrict outbound connections to those the design requires.
  • Retention and deletion: Keep only the video and metadata needed for the stated purpose, with documented deletion schedules and legal holds where applicable.
  • Human accountability: Assign an owner for thresholds, incident review, model changes and complaints. Do not let an automated score become an unchallengeable disciplinary decision.
  • Resilience: Plan for power loss, network outages, storage failure and vendor service interruption. Define which alerts continue locally and how unsent events are recovered.

Integration is the difference between a demo and a system

Analytics must fit the video-management platform, access-control system, incident process and workforce habits already in place. Check whether events use open interfaces, whether timestamps are synchronized, how clips are exported, and whether alarms can be acknowledged and escalated. Confirm licensing and update terms for cameras, recorders, analytics models and cloud storage before committing to a design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Integration also determines accountability. An event that appears in a dashboard but is not assigned to a person, recorded in an incident log or tied to a response procedure is merely another notification. Design the workflow first, then select the model and hardware that can support it.

What the trend means for buyers

The movement toward embedded analytics is real enough to influence product road maps: the Omdia forecast cited by ASIS and the Security Industry Association projects that more than 60% of network-camera and recorder revenue will come from devices with embedded deep-learning analytics in 2027, up from 44% in 2023. That forecast does not mean every camera on a project needs an AI feature, nor that buying an AI-capable device proves a business benefit.

For a construction organization, a defensible purchase decision connects four things: a clearly defined event, evidence from comparable site conditions, an architecture that fits bandwidth and operations, and controls for privacy, security and human review. If any one of those is missing, adding a more sophisticated model may increase cost and alert volume without improving safety or efficiency.
