A mortiser drills square holes by rotating a round auger bit inside a four-sided hollow chisel. The auger removes the center and carries chips away, while the chisel’s stationary sharp edges pare the remaining wood into straight sides and square corners. Both tools plunge together, but only the auger rotates.

The result is a square or rectangular mortise made by two coordinated cutting actions, not by a square drill bit. Understanding that division of labor makes the machine’s setup, chip clearance, sharpening, and tooling compatibility much easier to diagnose.

Key takeaways

  • A mortiser drills a square hole with a round rotating auger bit inside a four-sided hollow chisel.
  • The auger bit removes the center waste, while the stationary chisel cuts the straight walls and four corners.
  • The bit rotates with the spindle, but the chisel is held against rotation and guided into the workpiece.
  • The auger bit should project only slightly below the chisel’s cutting edges so it clears waste before the chisel does the heavier paring work.
  • Chip clearance, chisel sharpness, and compatibility between the chisel, bit, collar, shank, and machine all affect the cut.

How does a mortiser drill a square hole?

A mortiser drills a square hole by combining two cutting tools: a round auger bit and a square or rectangular hollow chisel. The rotating auger bores out most of the center, carries chips upward, and leaves four strips of wood around the outside. The hollow chisel’s four sharp edges then cut those strips away and form the straight sides and corners.

The process is not the same as using a square drill bit. A round bit cannot cut a square outline because its cutting edges follow a circular path. The square profile comes from the four stationary cutting edges surrounding the bit. WOOD Magazine’s explanation of the mortising action describes the auger-and-chisel combination and its role in producing square corners.

What happens inside the mortising chisel?

The mortising chisel is a hollow, four-sided steel tube with sharpened edges at its lower end. The auger bit fits inside that tube. During a plunge, the two tools enter the timber together, but they do different jobs:

Part Movement Primary job What it produces
Auger bit Rotates Bores out the center and lifts chips through its spiral flutes A round opening inside the intended mortise
Hollow chisel Moves down but is restrained from rotating Pares away the wood left outside the round bore Straight walls and square corners
Mortiser feed mechanism Moves the bit and chisel downward together Controls the plunge and depth A consistent mortise when the setup is rigid and correctly adjusted

The auger removes the bulk of the waste before the chisel must cut the remaining material. The chisel edges cut four narrow sections between the round bore and the square perimeter. The four corners are therefore made by the chisel’s edges, not by the round bit. The basic arrangement is also described in the historical United States patent for a mortising and boring machine.

How can a round drill bit make a square hole?

A round drill bit alone cannot make a square hole. A mortiser makes the result square because the bit works inside a non-rotating hollow chisel whose four outside edges cut beyond the circular bore.

  1. The bit clears the center. The spiral auger rotates and cuts a circular cross-section. Its flutes help move the waste upward through the chisel.
  2. The chisel cuts the perimeter. The four outside edges cut the wood remaining along the four sides of the intended mortise.
  3. The corners are pared by the chisel. The chisel edges meet at four corners, producing the square profile.
  4. The assembly advances. As the bit and chisel plunge farther, the same two-part cutting action extends the hole to the selected depth.

For a longer mortise, a woodworker usually makes a sequence of overlapping plunges or advances the work relative to the machine. The individual cuts overlap to create the required length, while the chisel continues to establish the sides and corners.

Does the mortising chisel rotate?

No. The auger bit rotates, but the hollow mortising chisel is held and guided so that it does not rotate with the spindle. Keeping the chisel stationary is what lets its four edges maintain a fixed square orientation while they pare the wood.

The chisel holder, collar, and guide arrangement keep the chisel aligned with the bit. The bit must remain centered inside the chisel rather than rubbing heavily against one wall. A loose, misaligned, or incompatible assembly can increase friction, worsen chip evacuation, and produce rough or inaccurately shaped cuts.

Why is chip clearance important?

Chip clearance is part of the mortiser’s cutting design. The auger removes most of the interior material, and the hollow space in the chisel provides a route for chips to leave the cutting area. If chips cannot escape, they can pack between the bit and chisel, increasing friction, heat, cutting resistance, and stress on the machine.

The spiral bit helps lift waste, while openings and the interior of the hollow chisel allow the waste to move away from the cut. The relationship between the bit and chisel must leave enough room for this flow. A United States patent describing hollow-chisel sharpening and cutting geometry explains the distinction between the bit’s circular cut and the chisel’s rectangular or polygonal cut, including the problems caused by inadequate clearance.

Chip clogging is more likely when the bit is too deeply buried inside the chisel, the cutting edges are dull, the chisel is not aligned, or the operator forces the plunge faster than the bit can clear waste. Clearing chips safely and reducing the feed pressure are preferable to forcing a stalled or overloaded cut.

How do you set the bit inside a hollow chisel?

Set the auger bit so its tip projects only slightly below the chisel’s cutting edge. The bit should begin clearing the interior waste before the chisel has to force all four walls through solid wood, but the bit should not project so far that it dominates the cut or interferes with proper chip clearance.

  1. Loosen the chisel holder and insert the auger bit through the hollow chisel.
  2. Position the bit so its tip is slightly below the chisel’s lower cutting edge.
  3. Secure the bit in the chuck while keeping it centered inside the chisel.
  4. Secure the chisel in its holder, leaving the manufacturer’s required clearance for chip escape.
  5. Rotate or check the assembly by hand with the machine disconnected from power, confirming that the bit does not bind against the chisel.
  6. Make a shallow test cut in scrap wood before cutting the workpiece.

The exact adjustment depends on the machine and tooling. The Grizzly G3183 owner’s manual instructs users to set the bit tip slightly below the chisel edge and notes that a bit shank may need shortening if the bit cannot be positioned correctly. Do not shorten a bit unless the machine or bit documentation specifically supports that adjustment and the resulting assembly can still be secured safely.

What does a mortiser need to cut clean square holes?

A clean square mortise depends on more than the basic bit-and-chisel principle. The following checks address the most common setup problems:

Check Correct condition Likely result if incorrect
Chisel sharpness Four cutting edges are sharp, square, and free of damage More force, rough walls, heat, and poor corner definition
Auger projection Bit tip extends only slightly below the chisel edge Poor chip removal, excess load, or an improperly sequenced cut
Bit centering Bit runs centrally inside the chisel Rubbing, binding, uneven walls, and accelerated wear
Chip openings and interior clearance Waste has a clear path out of the chisel Chip packing, friction, and increased spindle or feed resistance
Fence and workholding Workpiece is firmly supported and cannot shift Mislocated or enlarged mortises
Depth setting Depth stop is set for the required mortise depth Overcutting, incomplete joints, or damage to the workpiece or machine

Sharpening affects both cutting effort and chip flow because the hollow chisel performs the wall-forming and corner-cutting work. A dedicated sharpening system may use internal tools for the inside edges and an external stone for the outside edges. Grizzly describes those functions for its mortising chisel sharpening kit, but a sharpening kit is not automatically suitable for every chisel. Match the sharpening tool to the chisel’s internal geometry and size, and follow the tooling manufacturer’s instructions.

For replacement tooling, a hollow chisel mortising bit set combines the hollow chisel and its matching auger bit. Match the chisel size, collar or shank diameter, bit length, and mortiser model before buying. For example, Grizzly states that its H8237 four-piece set fits mortising attachments with 3/4-inch collars; that manufacturer statement is specific to the listed set and should not be generalized to every attachment or machine. Grizzly’s set specifications provide the relevant compatibility information for that product.

What is the difference between a standalone mortiser and a drill-press attachment?

A standalone mortiser is a purpose-built machine with its own work table, fence, spindle, chuck, depth control, and chisel holder. A drill-press mortising attachment uses the same hollow-chisel cutting principle but adds a holder and related hardware to a compatible drill press.

Decision factor Standalone benchtop mortiser Drill-press mortising attachment
What it is Complete machine designed for hollow-chisel mortising Attachment and hardware used with a suitable drill press
Best fit Frequent mortising and repeatable dedicated setup Occasional mortising when a compatible, sufficiently rigid drill press is already available
Workholding and controls Purpose-built table, fence, depth control, spindle, and chisel holder Depends partly on the drill press and attachment
Compatibility concern Chisel and holder must match the machine Collar, shank, bushing, spindle travel, and holder compatibility are especially important
Reach and capacity Limited by the machine’s table, throat, travel, and rated chisel size Limited by both the attachment and the drill press
Published example Grizzly’s T33127 lists a 1/2 HP motor, 1,725 RPM spindle speed, 3-inch maximum mortising depth, and 1/2-inch maximum chisel size Grizzly presents an attachment as a way to convert a heavy-duty drill press into a hollow-chisel mortising machine

The T33127 figures are specifications for that particular Grizzly model, not universal limits for mortisers. The manufacturer’s current T33127 product page lists those specifications and describes the machine as “A benchtop mortising machine for cutting square holes.” An older G3183 manual lists different model-specific capacities, including 2-inch maximum depth for some smaller chisels and 3-inch maximum depth for 1/2- and 5/8-inch chisels.

A drill-press attachment is not automatically compatible with every drill press. Check the attachment’s collar and shank requirements, the drill press’s spindle travel and throat depth, the available rigidity, and the thickness and size of the workpiece. Grizzly’s drill-press conversion material illustrates the intended attachment approach, but the compatibility decision still belongs to the specific attachment and drill-press documentation.

Why do mortising chisels need sharpening?

Mortising chisels need sharpening because their four edges perform the final wall and corner cuts. A sharp chisel requires less feed force, leaves cleaner walls, and is less likely to crush or tear the wood at the corners. The internal edges and external edges require different sharpening access, so use a method designed for the particular hollow chisel.

Inspect the chisel when cutting effort rises, corners become ragged, the machine begins to strain, or chips stop clearing normally. Remove burrs carefully and preserve the chisel’s square geometry. Do not assume that a generic drill-bit sharpener or any mortising kit will fit; internal diameter, edge geometry, and chisel size must match.

How does a mortiser make a longer mortise?

A mortiser makes a longer mortise through a series of overlapping square plunges or by moving the workpiece relative to the machine between cuts. Each plunge clears its own center and has its walls and corners formed by the hollow chisel. Overlapping the cuts removes the bridges of wood between individual holes.

For clean results, support the workpiece securely, establish the fence position, set the depth stop, and plan the plunge sequence before starting. Avoid taking an unnecessarily deep cut in one forced pass. The appropriate depth and feed depend on the machine, chisel size, wood, sharpness, and manufacturer’s limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can a round drill bit make a square hole?

A mortiser drills square holes by using a round rotating auger bit inside a non-rotating four-sided hollow chisel. The bit removes the center waste, and the chisel cuts the remaining wood into four straight sides and corners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the mortising chisel rotate?

The mortising chisel does not rotate. The auger bit rotates inside it, while the chisel is held and guided so its four cutting edges maintain the square profile.

How do you set the bit inside a hollow chisel?

Set the auger bit so its tip projects only slightly below the chisel’s cutting edge, then secure both parts while keeping the bit centered and allowing chips to escape. Follow the specific mortiser manual because required clearances vary by design.

Can I turn my drill press into a mortiser?

A drill-press mortising attachment can convert a compatible, sufficiently rigid drill press into a hollow-chisel mortiser. Compatibility depends on the attachment’s collar and shank requirements, spindle travel, workpiece reach, and the drill press’s rigidity.

The Bottom Line

A mortiser does not drill a square hole with a square bit. The rotating auger bit removes the center, while the non-rotating four-sided hollow chisel cuts the remaining wood into straight sides and square corners. Correct bit projection, chip clearance, sharp edges, and tooling compatibility are what make the mechanism work safely and cleanly.
