Most 3D-printed homes are built by extruding a specially designed cementitious mixture through a computer-controlled printhead, layer by layer, to form walls. The printer does not complete the house: foundations, structural design, reinforcement, insulation, utilities, openings, roof, finishes, inspections and approvals must also be planned and built, often using conventional methods.

What “3D-printed home” means on a construction site

In cement-based additive construction, a digital building model guides a machine that deposits material along a programmed path. The nozzle lays down successive, usually continuous, beads that build up the wall geometry. This is extrusion-based construction: it is not a small consumer printer scaled up, nor is it a process in which a complete finished house emerges from one machine.

The printed portion is generally the wall system. A project still has to coordinate the building’s foundation, structural load paths, openings, reinforcement, insulation, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services, roof, windows and doors, finishes, and inspections. Which tasks are printed, placed during printing, or completed afterward depends on the design, printer and local requirements.

NIST’s 2018 research roadmap describes computer-controlled extrusion of cement-based material in layers. Its later work emphasizes that the material, printing process and structural response are connected: print speed, geometry and orientation can affect material properties and how the finished element performs. Consequently, a wall shape that a machine can print is not automatically a structurally approved wall.

How the building process works, step by step

1. Adapt the building design to the printer and structural system

The project team starts with a building design, then determines how it can be made by the selected system. The printer has a defined work area and movement capabilities; the walls, corners, openings and print paths have to fit within those limits. The model also needs to describe a buildable sequence, not merely a finished appearance.

Structural engineering must account for the printed geometry, material properties and construction process. A printed wall’s performance can be affected by how it was deposited, including layer timing and orientation. NIST’s additive-construction program identifies the relationship between material and process properties and structural response as a central issue for performance-based design. That is why engineering cannot be reduced to choosing a house plan and asking the printer to reproduce it.

2. Prepare the site and build a compatible foundation

Site preparation, layout and surveying establish where the building and printer will sit. The foundation must match the building design and local structural requirements, and the printing setup needs a suitable, controlled work area. Foundation work is not inherently printed. COBOD, for example, describes printing a foundation outline to check the fit while reinforcement placement and concrete casting are carried out conventionally. That is one manufacturer’s example, not a universal foundation method.

3. Set up the printer and plan the material supply

A gantry-style printer moves a printhead along programmed axes over the build area. Before printing, the crew must position and configure the printer, connect the material-delivery system, and coordinate its operation with the building model and site logistics. The material may be supplied by ready-mix truck, mixed by a volumetric truck, or batched on site. The appropriate arrangement depends on project scale, supply and the printing system.

A construction printer is part of a larger production chain. A project needs a dependable feed of the specified material, as well as mixing and pumping equipment that can deliver it to the printhead at a workable rate. The setup is project-scale equipment; a hobby printer or generic mixer is not a substitute for an engineered construction system.

4. Mix and pump a printable cementitious material

The mixture must do two jobs that can pull in different directions. It needs to move through the pump and hose and extrude through the nozzle, while also retaining enough shape to support subsequent layers. Once hardened, it must have properties appropriate to its intended structural use. The ingredients and proportions therefore have to be suited to the machine, print path and design, rather than assumed to be interchangeable with ordinary concrete.

NIST describes the relevant performance chain from mix design, through extrusion, to hardened properties. Fresh behavior, process settings and structural response are linked: changing the mix or printing conditions can affect the resulting element. Material qualification and process control are therefore part of the building system, not simply a matter of selecting a convenient concrete delivery option.

5. Print the wall courses

The printhead follows the digital path and extrudes the mixture in successive layers. The machine creates the planned wall geometry; the material has to remain workable during delivery and deposition, then retain its shape as the next courses are added. Geometry, layer timing and material behavior all matter. NIST’s work notes that the construction process can influence structural performance and failure modes, so print parameters are engineering considerations, not just machine settings.

The printer forms only what the design and print path specify. Openings, cavities, corners and transitions must be coordinated in advance, and the crew must know when printing stops for other work. A printed wall should not be treated as a complete building envelope or a complete structural system without the project-specific design showing how it works with the rest of the house.

6. Coordinate reinforcement, services and the rest of the house

Reinforcement or grout may be placed at designed locations, and plumbing and electrical routes need to be accommodated. Some penetrations can be planned into the print geometry; other components may be installed during or after printing. COBOD describes pre-placed MEP openings and insulated double-wall cavities as examples of possible design approaches. These are examples, not standard features of every printed house.

After the printed walls are complete, the project still needs to address insulation, doors, windows, roof, utilities and finishes. The sequence depends on the wall system and building design. The key coordination task is to ensure those elements fit the printed geometry and satisfy the project’s structural, building-envelope and service requirements.

7. Test, inspect and obtain project approval

Printed construction should be treated as an engineered building system. Conventional concrete test methods may not apply directly to additively constructed material, according to NIST. Its performance project describes companion printed walls that can be cut into specimens as a practice used by the code community; this can consume time and resources. NIST also describes a four-point bending method as a candidate being considered for an ASTM test method, not as a finalized universal requirement.

Inspection and approval depend on the design, construction system and authority having jurisdiction. The owner and project team should establish what evidence, tests, inspection points and documents will be required before construction begins, rather than assume that machine output alone demonstrates compliance.

Materials used in a 3D-printed home

The primary printed material is a printable cementitious mixture: a formulated material designed to be pumped, extruded, hold its shape in layers and develop suitable hardened properties. It is not accurate to assume that any generic concrete mix will work in any printer. Aggregate, binder, water and other components have to be compatible with the delivery equipment and the intended process, while meeting the project’s design needs.

NIST’s cementitious-materials work stresses the need to understand the relationship between fresh material behavior, process conditions and hardened performance. The mix and printer settings are coupled. A material that can be pumped may still fail to retain the required shape, and a shape-retaining mix still has to be engineered and evaluated for the building’s intended use.

Other materials may be required for reinforcement, grout, insulation, openings, services, roof, doors, windows and finishes. Their type and placement are project-specific; the fact that a wall is printed does not specify how these other building components are supplied or installed.

Equipment involved in printing a house

Equipment or input Role in the process What varies by project
Digital building model and print path Defines the geometry and programmed route the printhead follows. Model details must fit the selected printer’s work area, movement and construction sequence.
Printer frame and controls Moves the printhead along programmed axes to deposit successive layers. Printer configuration and build envelope differ by system.
Material supply and batching Provides the specified cementitious material for printing. Supply may use ready-mix trucks, volumetric mixing or an on-site batch plant, depending on the system, scale and local supply.
Pump and hose Moves mixed material from its supply or batching point to the printhead. Must be compatible with the mix and delivery requirements of the selected system.
Printhead and nozzle Extrudes material along the programmed path to form wall layers. Nozzle and process configuration are system-specific.

COBOD describes its production chain as including a silo, batch plant, pump and printhead, and lists ready-mix, volumetric-truck and on-site batching supply options. Those descriptions illustrate one manufacturer’s equipment path; they do not establish that every system uses the same components or layout.

For a specific project, useful comparison questions include the system’s material supply and mix requirements, printable envelope and geometry, reinforcement and testing approach, crew and site logistics, and local code acceptance and service support. These factors can determine whether the machine can be used effectively on that project; a printer’s headline capability alone does not settle the question.

Strength figures and what they do—and do not—tell you

COBOD’s current BOD2 product page lists a typical strength of 30–35 MPa, approximately 4,400–5,100 psi, for that system. This is a manufacturer-stated specification for the BOD2, accessed October 10, 2026. It is not a general strength value for all 3D-printed concrete, nor does it by itself establish the structural capacity or code approval of a particular house. Project design and verification remain necessary.

NIST’s 2018 roadmap and its program pages focus on the broader challenge: understanding how material properties and printing conditions translate into performance under designed loading. A single strength number cannot describe every relevant behavior of a printed wall or replace the engineering and testing appropriate to a given application.

Building codes, testing and approval: what is established

NIST describes cement-based additive construction as an emerging, rapidly evolving field. Its cementitious-materials page, updated May 14, 2025, states that there are no building codes or standards yet for 3D-printed concrete. That statement describes the standards landscape; it should not be read to mean that no 3D-printed house can be permitted anywhere.

NIST’s September 4, 2024, review of acceptance criteria describes efforts developing in the United States. ICON announced acceptance criteria for its own printed walls in 2023. Together, these show that criteria can be system- and jurisdiction-specific; they do not demonstrate universal approval for all printers, wall designs or locations. Local authorities determine what applies to a proposed project.

Testing is also an active area of standards work. NIST says conventional tests may not directly apply, describes companion walls cut into specimens as a practice used by the code community, and identifies a candidate four-point bending approach under consideration for an ASTM test method. A candidate method is not a final rule. The project team should confirm the applicable testing and acceptance pathway with the relevant authority and design professionals.

NIST’s January 16, 2025, workshop report on standardization and its project work on long-term performance reflect continuing efforts to address performance and acceptance. For a homeowner, the practical point is to verify the proposed system and design with the local building authority before relying on a general claim about code compliance.

What to confirm before choosing a printed-wall system

  • Design fit: Confirm that the building geometry and planned openings can be produced within the printer’s work area and movement limits.
  • Engineering basis: Ask how the material and print process are accounted for in the structural design, including reinforcement and the intended loading conditions.
  • Material logistics: Establish the specified mixture, how it will be supplied and batched, and how the pump and printhead will be supported on site.
  • Construction interfaces: Determine how foundations, reinforcement, insulation, utilities, windows, doors, roof and finishes will be sequenced with wall printing.
  • Testing and inspection: Confirm the evidence, test methods and inspection points required for the actual design and jurisdiction.
  • Permit acceptance: Get the local authority’s requirements for the proposed printed system and project rather than relying on broad statements that 3D-printed homes are or are not permitted.

Costs and construction time: why a single figure can mislead

There is no independently verified cross-industry home-printing time, cost or savings statistic established here. COBOD publishes residential time and price estimates, but those are vendor claims tied to project assumptions, not a universal benchmark. A comparison is meaningful only when its scope is clear: whether the figure covers printed walls alone or the finished home, and what design, site, foundation, labor, material, equipment and approval work is included.

Printing the walls does not eliminate the remaining construction scope. The overall project still needs foundations, engineering, reinforcement where designed, building services, insulation, openings, roof, finishes and inspection. A wall-printing duration or price should not be treated as the time or cost to deliver an approved, complete home unless its stated scope includes those items.

Why the process is still evolving

Research and standards work continue because the performance of additively constructed concrete depends on more than the hardened material’s nominal strength. NIST identifies the need to understand how mix design and extrusion conditions affect properties and structural response, and whether conventional standards suit additively fabricated structures. Its performance project notes that existing methods may not apply directly and that specimen preparation can be resource-intensive.

The 2023 HUD USER article, “3D Concrete Printed Houses: Barriers to Adoption and Construction Practices,” addresses construction practices and adoption barriers. Its existence is a reminder that a printer is only one part of deployment: engineering, site operations, material supply and acceptance all have to work together. Practical experience with one system or project does not establish a universal recipe for every house.
