A pot of oil left on a stove was reported as the believed trigger of a house fire on The Strand in Dianella on Thursday afternoon, 26 March 2015. Four fire crews brought the blaze under control within an hour.
What happened on The Strand
PerthNow reported that firefighters were called to the house at about noon. The fire had started in a cupboard and spread into the roof. Four crews attended and controlled it within an hour, according to the report published by Claire Bickers on 26 March 2015.
The report said it was believed a woman and child were home at the time. It did not establish their condition, whether anyone was injured, the extent of the property damage or the outcome of any later investigation.

PerthNow identified a pot of oil left on the stove as the believed trigger. That is the cause reported at the time, not a detailed later investigation finding.

Kitchen fire safety: current DFES guidance
The following is general guidance from Western Australia’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), not a finding about what happened in the 2015 fire.
- Stay with cooking, switch off the stove before leaving the room and keep flammable materials away from heat.
- Keep ovens, rangehoods and grills clean; accumulated grease can ignite.
- Never pour water on a fat or oil fire. DFES warns that water can make the fat explode and spread the fire.
If a small pan fire starts
- Turn off the stove if you can do so safely.
- A fire blanket is DFES’s safest method for a contained pan fire. Use one only in the first seconds of ignition and only if you know how to use it safely. Follow the blanket’s instructions.
- If the fire is not immediately and safely controllable, get everyone out, close the door and call 000.
Kitchen fire blanket and extinguisher guidance
DFES recommends a fire blanket bearing the Australian Standards Mark AS 3504, stored in or next to the kitchen—not beside or above the stove. Blankets are single-use. DFES also identifies a BE dry chemical powder extinguisher as a kitchen option for small cooking-oil fires. Extinguishers are not interchangeable: select and use one according to its instructions, and prioritise evacuation if the fire is beyond immediate safe control.
