Its ideas—creative planting, compact urban growing and experimentation—can help anyone rethink a balcony, indoor space or small yard. The available evidence does not show that Gen Z as a whole is driving these changes; it points instead to specific interests and practices reported by gardening organizations.
What hortifuturism means—and what it does not
Garden Media Group’s 2024 report places “HORTIFUTURISM” within its broader “Eco-Optimism” theme and lists seven trend personas: Digital, Bold, Enchanting, Eclectic, Elevated, Hopeful and Punchy. The accessible report material establishes the trend’s name and context, but not a precise definition. It is best understood here as a named design trend, not a settled gardening method or technical standard. Garden Media Group’s 2024 trends page
The title’s generational framing also needs qualification. RHS predictions say carnivorous plants have long been popular among younger gardeners, and its 2024 material describes new urban gardeners using pots, vertical approaches and terrariums. Those observations can illustrate ideas that may appeal to younger or digitally engaged gardeners; they do not establish that all Gen Z gardeners share the same tastes or that this generation caused a redesign of gardens.
How garden ideas are changing in practice
Growing in small urban spaces
A garden does not require a yard. A balcony, windowsill, patio or other small urban space can support plants in containers. The RHS has described urban gardeners growing in pots and making use of limited space. Choose plants and containers to suit the space’s sunlight, exposure and available room rather than assuming a compact garden can support every plant. RHS gardening trends for 2024

Growing up instead of out
Vertical arrangements can make use of wall or railing space where floor area is limited. Before adding a trellis, shelf or hanging container, consider its weight, secure fixing, access for watering and the amount of light plants will receive. These are practical checks for adapting vertical growing to a particular building and site, not a universal RHS specification.
Bringing growing indoors
Indoor plants and terrariums let people garden without a garden, but indoor conditions differ from outdoor ones. Match a plant to the light available, room conditions and the attention you can give it. A grow light may help where natural light is insufficient; it is an optional aid, not a defining feature of hortifuturism.

Making room for unusual plants
The RHS’s 2025 predictions note that carnivorous plants have long been popular among younger gardeners. Their appeal is one example of interest in distinctive plants, not evidence of a uniform generational preference. Check the care needs of any unusual plant before choosing it, especially its light, water and maintenance requirements. RHS gardening predictions for 2025

Beyond appearance: gardens with practical environmental roles
RHS trend material has also highlighted wildlife-conscious gardening, edible perennials, urban greening and resilient planting. These ideas connect personal creativity with practical purposes, but they are not all the same trend and do not suit every site. For example, a wildlife-supporting planting plan needs to be considered alongside the space, local conditions and the gardener’s ability to maintain it.

The scale of UK gardening is substantial: the RHS State of Gardening Report 2025 says around 41 million people in the UK garden at least once a month. The same report estimates that UK gardens cover 959,800 hectares and support more than 50 million trees. These are UK-wide figures, not evidence of a Gen Z effect. RHS State of Gardening Report 2025

Annual predictions should be read as forecasts for their stated year, not timeless findings or representative surveys of Gen Z. For 2025, RHS Chief Horticulturist Guy Barter said, “Gardens never stand still and 2025 is likely to see not only new, exciting planting choices but new ways of designing, growing and maintaining spaces.” RHS gardening predictions for 2025

The RHS’s 2026 release adds tabletop vegetables and moving plants between indoor and outdoor settings to its predicted interests. Those examples extend the range of ways people might grow; they should not be combined with earlier-year predictions as if they were one permanent trend or proof of a generational shift.
