For most Hoover SmartWash problems, start with the affected tank, nozzle, filter or brushroll—not an internal repair. Turn the cleaner off and unplug it before cleaning or inspecting parts. The steps below follow Hoover’s SmartWash+ manual; controls and parts can differ across SmartWash models, so check the complete model number on the back of your machine before using a manual or ordering a replacement.
Before troubleshooting: identify your model and work safely
Hoover lists SmartWash+ FH52000 and SmartWash PET Complete FH53000, along with variants such as FH52000V and FH53000V. Find the complete model number on the back of your cleaner, then use the matching Hoover product manual and parts listing. Do not assume a part or instruction for one variant fits every SmartWash.
Unplug the cleaner before cleaning or servicing it. Hoover’s SmartWash+ manual states, “THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS NO SERVICEABLE PARTS.” That makes accessible checks—such as reseating a tank, clearing a reachable blockage or cleaning the brushroll—the appropriate limit for owner troubleshooting, rather than opening the machine or attempting electrical repairs.
SmartWash will not turn on
Hoover’s manual lists several possible causes: the plug is loose, the outlet has no power, a household fuse or breaker has tripped, the cleaner’s internal fuse has failed, or the On/Off pedal has not been pressed.

- Push the plug firmly into the outlet.
- Check whether the outlet has power and whether a household fuse or breaker needs attention.
- Press the On/Off pedal.
If these checks do not resolve the problem, or you suspect an internal fuse issue, contact a Hoover service center. Do not open the cleaner to investigate.
Weak suction or poor water pickup
Weak pickup does not necessarily mean the motor has failed. Hoover lists a full dirty-water tank or automatic shutoff, an unsecured tank or lid, a clogged debris filter, a blocked nozzle or hose, and an incorrectly installed nozzle among the possible causes.

- Turn off and unplug the cleaner.
- Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank. Make sure its lid is secure and the tank is seated firmly in the cleaner.
- Inspect the accessible debris-filter and nozzle areas; clean them if clogged.
- Check the accessible hose and nozzle for a blockage and clear it if possible.
- Reinstall the nozzle correctly before using the cleaner again.
Hoover cautions that a clean filter is critical for suction and that the nozzle must be positioned correctly. If pickup remains poor after these checks, consult Hoover support rather than assuming a particular internal component has failed.
Clean water or solution will not dispense on the floor
For floor cleaning, Hoover’s manual identifies an empty clean-water or solution tank, or a tank that is not firmly in place, as possible causes. Refill the relevant tank and seat it securely. The cleaner also needs to move forward for floor solution to dispense; test while pushing it forward rather than holding it still.

The accessory hose will not spray
Hose spraying has different checks from dispensing on the floor. Confirm that both containers have liquid and that the solution-port connection is secure. If the hose still does not spray, trapped air may be preventing the accessory from priming.
- With the cleaner on, lower the hose to the floor.
- Hold the hose trigger for up to one minute to prime the pump.
- If it still does not spray, contact Hoover service.
The brushes will not rotate
The brushroll will not rotate while the handle is upright. Press the handle-release pedal to recline the cleaner for floor cleaning. Hoover also lists brushroll stall protection as a possible cause if the brushes stop turning.

- Turn the cleaner off, then turn it back on.
- Unplug it before inspecting or cleaning the brushroll. Hoover warns that the brushroll may suddenly restart.
- Remove accessible debris or a jam, following the matching model manual, then reinstall any parts you removed.
If a brushroll component appears damaged or missing, verify compatibility using the complete model number before ordering a replacement. Hoover lists model-specific options such as a SmartWash replacement brushroll, end cap and bearing; availability and fit depend on the exact model.

First check whether the clean-water, solution or dirty-water tank is firmly seated. Hoover lists an improperly seated tank as a possible cause, but residual moisture can also drip after use. The manual recommends letting the cleaner and brushes dry before storing it on a hard floor.

If reseating the tanks does not resolve persistent or unusual leaking, contact Hoover support. A listed replacement tank, cap or seal is not proof that any one of those parts is causing the leak; inspect the affected area and verify the exact model before replacing a component.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Hoover
Stop using the cleaner and contact Hoover customer service if it still does not work as it should after the manual-supported checks, or if it has been dropped or damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water. Hoover’s support library provides manual lookup, how-to videos and service-center lookup. Its support page displayed US residential support at +1 877-816-2058, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. EST, when accessed on October 8, 2026; confirm current hours with Hoover before calling.
