Hongling Middle School Shixia Campus in Shenzhen expanded its teaching capacity without taking the existing western teaching building out of use. Tumushi Architects’ central move was to raise the main playground 7.2 metres above street level, freeing the ground and lower levels for sports, performance and community uses while opening a denser campus edge to the neighborhood.
Project overview
ArchDaily identifies the 2023 project as an elementary and middle school extension in Shenzhen, China, designed by Tumushi Architects. Its project profile, published April 14, 2026, lists a total floor area of 42,177 m² and names Futian District Education Bureau and Hongling Middle School (Hongling Education Group) as clients. Lead architects are Qili Yang, Wenhua Deng and Yan Bai; ArchDaily lists Shenzhen Vanke Development Co., Ltd. as construction agent and Chao Zhang as photographer. gooood reports a 22,041 m² site, 42,177 m² total floor area, 15,693 m² of original floor area before demolition, 1,516 m² demolished and 28,000 m² newly added. It identifies reinforced-concrete framing for the teaching buildings and cafeteria, and a steel structure for the gymnasium and auditorium. The area figures should be read with their source attached: ArchDaily describes growth from 15,000 m² to 43,000 m², while gooood reports 15,693 m² before demolition and 42,177 m² in total. These are differently stated figures, not a basis for silently combining or reconciling them.

How the expansion kept the school operating
The project replaced the eastern gymnasium and sports ground while the western teaching building remained operational during construction, according to ArchDaily. Rather than clear the campus and rebuild it as a single new complex, the design retained the original teaching building and extended from it with four new blocks. ArchDaily says the school’s capacity increased from 24 to 36 classes. The project description also notes that a twenty-year-old banyan tree was preserved at the entrance plaza. This construction and campus strategy makes the retained building part of the completed composition, not simply an isolated remnant. The available project accounts do not provide a construction schedule, phasing drawings or details of temporary access and safety arrangements, so the precise sequencing cannot be established from them.

Why raise the playground 7.2 metres?
The elevated natural-turf field is the project’s organizing section. Raising it 7.2 metres above grade lets the campus place other programs beneath and beside the sports surface instead of assigning the entire ground plane to an open field. Under and around the raised playground, the project description identifies a 700-seat auditorium, a semi-indoor gym, badminton courts and an elevated track. It says facilities are made available to residents through time-sharing. That arrangement presents the school’s sports and cultural infrastructure as a potential neighborhood resource; the published account does not set out access hours, management arrangements or the school’s formal operating rules.

How the campus meets the neighborhood
At street level, the design pairs the elevated field with a more permeable edge. ArchDaily reports that the sidewalk widened from 3 to 6 metres, with planters and benches forming a linear street park. A planted hill at the southeast corner links the neighborhood to the raised playground after hours, according to the project description. The description characterizes the sidewalk change as relieving pedestrian-bicycle congestion; no independent traffic or post-occupancy measurements are reported. Source: ArchDaily [c001].
The combination matters architecturally: community connection is addressed through both the public-facing ground plane and access to facilities above it. This differs from treating a school boundary solely as a fence, but it does not mean the entire campus is unrestricted. The source describes time-shared facilities and an after-hours connection, not unrestricted public entry.

Climate strategies in the sports spaces
ArchDaily’s project description highlights metal mesh and aluminum sunshade panels intended to admit breezes, a covered track, shaded courtyards and a sunken, column-free basketball court. These are design strategies for making outdoor and semi-outdoor sports areas more usable in Shenzhen’s hot climate. The project information does not provide energy consumption, temperature or humidity readings, airflow measurements, or post-occupancy comfort findings, so their performance should not be treated as independently measured.
What the project demonstrates—and what the sources do not establish
For a constrained urban school, Hongling Shixia shows how vertical organization can make one site accommodate teaching, sports, performance and neighborhood-facing space while retaining an operating teaching building. Its section—field above, shared and athletic programs below, and a widened, planted street edge—is the clearest way to understand the proposal.
