Mix 1 quart (4 cups) of warm water with 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar for a simple homemade window cleaner. Spray a light amount on the glass and wipe it with a clean, soft lint-free cloth. Check your window maker’s care instructions first, and never mix vinegar with bleach or ammonia-containing cleaners.

Vinegar window-cleaner recipe and ratio

Oregon Metro’s general glass-cleaner recipe is 1 quart (4 cups) warm water to 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar. Add both ingredients to a clean spray bottle and label it clearly. Mix only what you need, and store the bottle out of children’s reach, as UF/IFAS advises.

There is no single dilution established for every window. Pella recommends a different ratio—1 cup white vinegar to 10 cups water—for its own windows. Follow the care instructions for your particular windows rather than assuming one mixture suits every product.

How to clean windows with the solution

  1. Remove loose grit. Dust the pane or brush away debris before applying liquid so you are less likely to drag particles across the glass.
  2. Spray lightly. Apply a light mist to the glass instead of soaking the pane, frame, or sill.
  3. Wipe or squeegee. Use a clean, soft lint-free microfiber cloth. On larger panes, a squeegee is an optional alternative; work methodically and keep its blade clean. Oregon Metro identifies a squeegee as a useful tool, and Pella recommends a lint-free microfiber cloth for its windows.
  4. Finish with a clean section. If marks remain, switch to a clean part of the cloth and dry the glass. A streak-free result is not guaranteed: residue, water, cloth condition, and window-care requirements can affect the finish.

Choose a cloth or a squeegee

Tool When it may suit you Practical consideration
Soft lint-free microfiber cloth For wiping panes of any size, especially when you want a simple option. Use a clean cloth and turn it to a dry section as needed.
Squeegee For larger panes where removing liquid in controlled passes is convenient. Keep the blade clean and work methodically to manage drips.

Neither tool needs to be a particular brand; choose the one that is available and comfortable to use.

Safety and window-surface compatibility

  • Do not mix this solution with bleach or ammonia-containing cleaners. Health Canada warns that mixing bleach with other chemicals—especially acids such as vinegar or products containing ammonia—can produce toxic gases. CCOHS also advises against mixing vinegar, bleach, or ammonia in homemade cleaners. Use the vinegar solution by itself, and never pour it into a bottle that may contain another product.
  • Check the window maker’s care instructions. Do not assume vinegar is suitable for every coating, frame, seal, stone sill, or specialty glass. Follow product-specific guidance.
  • Test an inconspicuous spot if compatibility is uncertain. UF/IFAS recommends trying a cleaner on a less visible area first to check for possible discoloration.
