Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor streak-free windows, the cleaner matters, but the method matters more. On our job sites, most streaking problems come from four things: hard tap water, too much soap, hot glass, and dirty towels. The right DIY mix costs pennies per batch, but it still needs clean microfiber, a sharp rubber squeegee, and a little discipline at the edges.
Here are the three homemade window cleaner recipes worth keeping: a simple vinegar-and-water spray for routine interior glass, an alcohol-vinegar spray for fast-drying mirrors and fingerprints, and a low-soap bucket wash for exterior windows. Used correctly, these cover nearly every normal household window-cleaning job.
For 2026 cost context, a quart of homemade cleaner usually costs well under $1 in ingredients. Professional residential window cleaning commonly runs about $150 to $400 for a typical home, with many services pricing around $4 to $15 per window or $8 to $20 per pane depending on height, access, screens, tracks, divided lites, and staining. DIY is the best value for accessible first-floor glass. Pros make more sense when ladders, hard-water deposits, construction debris, or many panes are involved.
The Three DIY Window Cleaner Recipes We Actually Use
Do not overcomplicate the chemistry. Household glass does not need a harsh cleaner most of the time. It needs a light solution that lifts soil, then disappears without residue.
#1 Best Overall
- 10-inch (25cm) Squeegee & Microfiber Window Washer
- Squeegee work great for any smooth surfaces
- Aluminum clip with durable natural rubber blade
- Thicker microfiber cover has a better water absorbing effect
- Light weight plastic handle can connect with our telescopic pole
Recipe 1: Everyday Vinegar Window Cleaner
Best for: interior windows, fingerprints, light mineral haze, patio doors, routine touch-ups, and glass that is not greasy.
Mix:
- 1 cup distilled white vinegar, 5% acidity
- 1 cup distilled water
Add both ingredients to a clean spray bottle, label it, and shake lightly. That is a 1:1 vinegar cleaner. If your windows are only dusty, spray lightly. If they have handprints or dog nose marks, spray the cloth first, wipe the area, then finish with a dry microfiber glass cloth.
This recipe is inexpensive. A gallon of distilled white vinegar commonly costs about $3 to $5, and distilled water often runs about $1 to $2 per gallon. A quart of this cleaner is usually around $0.50 to $0.90 in consumables, depending on local pricing.
Vinegar is not a magic degreaser. On kitchen windows with cooking film, it may smear unless you pre-wipe the greasy area or add a tiny amount of dish soap. Tiny means one or two drops per quart, not a visible squirt. Too much soap leaves surfactant residue, which is one of the main reasons windows streak after cleaning.

Best for: mirrors, bathroom glass, interior panes, light fingerprints, and times when you want a faster dry with less buffing.
Mix:
- 1 cup distilled water
- 1 cup 70% isopropyl alcohol
- 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
Pour the water into the spray bottle first, then add the alcohol and vinegar. Label the bottle clearly. Use this one with ventilation: open a nearby window or run a bath fan if you are cleaning several panes indoors.
The alcohol speeds evaporation, which helps reduce streaks on mirrors and indoor glass. It also cuts light oily fingerprints better than vinegar alone. In 2026, a 32-ounce bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol commonly costs about $3 to $5, so this mixture still lands well under $1 per quart in most homes.
Do not use this as an all-purpose cleaner on every surrounding surface. Alcohol can affect some finishes, painted trim, plastics, and aftermarket films. Spray the cloth instead of the window if you are working near stained wood, painted casing, natural stone, or unknown materials.
Recipe 3: Exterior Squeegee Wash
Best for: exterior windows, larger panes, sliding doors, sunroom glass, and any job where paper towels would take too long.
Mix:
- 1 gallon cool water
- 1 teaspoon mild dish soap
- Optional: 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
This is closer to professional technique than spray-and-wipe cleaning. Fill a bucket with cool water, add only 1 teaspoon of dish soap, and stir gently. Use a window scrubber sleeve or clean microfiber cloth to wet the entire pane. Scrub the edges and corners where grime builds up. Then remove the solution with a rubber squeegee using overlapping passes.
The soap is there for slip and soil release, not foam. If the bucket looks like dishwater, you used too much. On exterior windows, too much soap can dry into drag marks and milky streaks, especially in sun or wind.
Rank #2
- 11" squeegee and microfiber window brush. (NOT include extension pole!)
- 180° can be freely rotated to the angle you want, just press and release the swivel button on top to meet the exact angle needed.
- High quality machine washable and removable chenille microfiber duster.
- Easy to install extension pole with standard US 3/4 inch threading Poles.(when combined with the Hicavar extension Pole).
- Used for cleaning furniture, window, blinds, in cabinets, ceilings, car window, etc.
The optional vinegar helps with light mineral haze and water spotting, but it will not remove heavy hard-water stains, mortar residue, paint overspray, silicone smears, or grinder-spark damage. Those are different problems, and some require specialty pads, manufacturer-approved methods, or replacement glass.
Recipe Comparison and 2026 Cost Breakdown
Most homeowners already own part of this kit. If you are starting from scratch, the basic setup is still modest: microfiber cloths at about $8 to $20 per pack, a spray bottle at $2 to $8, a 10- to 12-inch squeegee at $8 to $20, a bucket at $5 to $15, a scrubber sleeve at $10 to $25, and an extension pole at roughly $20 to $60.
| Cleaner | Best Use | Basic Mix | Approx. Consumable Cost | Best Tool |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vinegar and distilled water | Routine interior glass | 1 part vinegar, 1 part distilled water | Usually under $1 per quart | Microfiber glass cloth |
| Alcohol-vinegar spray | Fast-dry mirrors and fingerprints | 1 cup water, 1 cup 70% alcohol, 1 tbsp vinegar | Usually under $1 per quart | Two-cloth wipe and buff |
| Exterior squeegee wash | Outdoor panes and large glass | 1 gallon water, 1 tsp dish soap, optional 1/2 cup vinegar | Pennies per gallon batch | Scrubber and rubber squeegee |
If your home has hard water, use distilled water or deionized water in the mix. Minerals in tap water can leave spots even when the cleaner is correct. Pros often rely on purified-water systems for spot-free exterior rinsing; a homeowner version is simply starting with mineral-free water for spray bottles and final detailing.
The Streak-Free Method: What Matters More Than the Recipe
We clean glass on job sites after trim work, painting, siding, and dust-producing trades have come through. The biggest lesson is simple: never turn loose dirt into wet mud on the pane. Dry grit, screen dust, and sill debris must be handled before the final glass pass.
Step 1: Clean Screens, Sills, and Tracks First
Remove loose dirt from screens with a soft brush or vacuum. Wipe the sill and lower track before cleaning the pane. If you clean the glass first and then disturb a dirty screen, the next breeze or rain can redeposit grime onto the window.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For sliding window tracks, use a vacuum crevice tool first. Then wipe with a damp microfiber cloth. Avoid flooding tracks with water. Many windows have weep holes designed to drain incidental water, not a bucket of cleaning solution.
Step 2: Work on Cool Glass
Clean early in the morning, on an overcast day, or on the shaded side of the house. Direct sun heats the glass and dries the cleaner before you can remove it. That premature drying leaves arcs, haze, and edge marks.
For a two-story house, work by elevation: shaded east-facing glass later in the day, west-facing glass in the morning, and south-facing glass only when it is not hot to the touch. If a pane feels warm under your palm, wait.
Step 3: Use Light Product Load
More cleaner does not mean cleaner glass. For interior windows, two or three light sprays are enough for a normal double-hung sash. For a large patio door, use four to six sprays and spread evenly. If liquid is running down the frame, you are using too much.
On exterior glass, the pane should be wet enough for the squeegee to glide, but not so soaked that dirty water pours into the sill and onto siding or unfinished surfaces. Keep vinegar-based solutions away from natural stone, unsealed concrete, raw wood, and delicate metal finishes.

- 14-inch (35cm) Squeegee & Microfiber Window Washer
- Squeegee work great for any smooth surfaces
- Aluminum clip with durable natural rubber blade
- Thicker microfiber cover has a better water absorbing effect
- Light weight plastic handle can connect with our telescopic pole
Step 4: Squeegee With Overlapping Passes
Use a clean rubber blade with a sharp edge. A nicked or hardened blade leaves lines no matter what cleaner you use. Pull from top to bottom or side to side, overlapping each pass by about 1 inch. Wipe the squeegee rubber after every pass with a clean towel. That one habit prevents most drag marks.
For small divided panes or French lites, a full-size squeegee may be awkward. Use a smaller squeegee, lint-free huck towel, or microfiber glass cloth. Work pane by pane, and keep the cloth dry enough to absorb instead of smear.
Step 5: Detail the Perimeter
Late-appearing streaks often come from the edges. After squeegeeing, run a dry microfiber cloth around the perimeter of the glass where water collects against the frame. Use a separate cloth for final buffing. Once microfiber is damp or loaded with residue, flip it or replace it.
Do not wash glass cloths with fabric softener or dryer sheets. They leave residues that transfer to glass and create the exact haze you are trying to remove.
What Not to Mix or Use on Windows
Never mix bleach with ammonia-based glass cleaner, vinegar, alcohol, or other household chemicals. Mixing bleach with other cleaners can create dangerous gases. For window work, bleach is unnecessary anyway. If mildew is present on surrounding trim or sills, handle that as a separate cleaning task with the right product, ventilation, gloves, and rinsing method.
Avoid abrasive pads, powdered cleansers, and scraper blades unless the window manufacturer allows them for that specific glass. Scrapers can permanently scratch tempered glass, coated glass, tinted glass, or glass contaminated with construction grit. The risk is higher after remodeling because the pane may have paint overspray, stucco, mortar, drywall dust, silicone, adhesive, or metal fragments on it.
Low-E coatings are usually protected inside insulated glass units, but specialty coatings and aftermarket films can have strict cleaning rules. If the glass has tint, security film, decorative film, privacy coating, or an unknown finish, test a small corner first and follow the film or window manufacturer’s instructions.

Also avoid leaning out of windows to reach exterior glass. It is slower to move equipment, but faster than recovering from a fall. For upper-story exterior windows, use an extension pole from the ground when possible.
DIY vs. Hiring a Professional Window Cleaner
DIY window cleaning is economical when the glass is accessible, the soil is normal, and the work can be done from the ground or from inside the home. A homeowner with a $15 squeegee, a $12 microfiber pack, a $5 spray bottle, and a few dollars of ingredients can maintain first-floor windows for a fraction of a service visit.
Professional cleaning starts to make financial and practical sense when access gets complicated. In 2026, typical whole-home residential window cleaning often falls around $150 to $400, but the actual price depends heavily on the house. A single-story ranch with 15 easy windows is not the same job as a three-story home with divided lites, skylights, storm windows, screens, tracks, and hard-water staining.

| Situation | DIY Makes Sense | Hire a Pro |
|---|---|---|
| First-floor interior glass | Yes, usually simple and low cost | Only if time is the issue |
| Second- or third-story exterior glass | Only with a safe pole setup from the ground | Often the better choice |
| Hard-water deposits | Light haze only | Yes for bonded mineral stains |
| Post-construction debris | Only loose dust and washable dirt | Yes for paint, mortar, stucco, silicone, or overspray |
| Fog between panes | No cleaner will fix it | Call a window or glass professional |
Hard-water stain removal, paint overspray removal, and post-construction cleanup can cost extra because they require more labor and specialized materials than standard washing. If the glass is scratched, etched, or fogged between panes, cleaning will not restore it. Fogging inside a double-pane insulated glass unit usually points to seal failure.

Ladder, Access, and Permit Notes
Cleaning windows does not usually require a building permit. Replacing windows may. Permit rules vary by jurisdiction, but replacement can trigger code requirements for safety glazing, emergency escape and rescue openings, fall protection, energy performance, tempered glass near doors or tubs, and structural changes. If the work changes the opening size, header, egress dimensions, or exterior envelope, check with the local building department before starting.
For cleaning, the main safety concern is access. Ladder injuries are serious and common enough that they should change how you plan the job. Use an extension pole from the ground for high exterior glass whenever possible. If a ladder is unavoidable, place it on a firm, level surface, maintain three points of contact, keep your belt buckle between the rails, and climb down to reposition instead of overreaching.
Do not place ladders on boxes, buckets, wet decking, loose soil, or sloped landscaping. Do not work near overhead electrical lines. Do not carry a full bucket up a ladder. A low-cost DIY cleaning job is not low-cost if it creates a fall hazard.

Smears that move around usually mean grease, smoke film, or loaded towels. Use the alcohol-vinegar spray indoors, change cloths, and use one cloth for wet wiping and a separate dry cloth for final buffing.
Fog that will not wipe away may be between panes. If a double-pane window looks cloudy inside the glass unit, the insulated glass seal may have failed. Surface cleaner will not reach that cavity.
A Practical Cleaning Schedule
For most homes, clean interior glass every 2 to 3 months in high-touch areas and every 6 months in lower-use rooms. Exterior glass usually benefits from cleaning 1 to 2 times per year, more often if the home is near sprinklers, trees, salt air, heavy pollen, construction activity, or dusty roads.
After remodeling, clean carefully. Start with dry dust removal using a vacuum and soft brush. Do not drag drywall dust, tile grit, mortar crumbs, or paint flecks across glass. Identify contaminants before using blades or strong chemicals. On our job sites, we treat finished glass as a surface that can be permanently damaged by the wrong shortcut.
