A homemade SMT pick-and-place machine automates the placement of surface-mount components on a printed circuit board (PCB): it picks parts—usually with a vacuum nozzle—aligns them, and places them at programmed locations. Building one means integrating a frame, motion system, pickup hardware, vision, feeders, work holding, and control software—not simply assembling an XY gantry.

What a homemade SMT pick-and-place machine does

In this context, “pick and place” means PCB assembly, not general-purpose industrial material handling. Components are presented in feeders or another supply arrangement. A nozzle picks each part using vacuum, the machine aligns it, and the control software directs placement at the PCB coordinates.

OpenPnP describes an open-source software and hardware system that can operate a builder’s own machine design or compatible commercial machines. Its project page describes the project as stable and widely used while still under active development; that is maintainer-provided status, not independent reliability testing. OpenPnP’s project site and project page explain its scope.

What systems the build must integrate

The machine is a coordinated mechatronics system. OpenPnP’s hardware overview identifies the major subsystems below. The required details depend on the chosen design; the overview does not establish universal dimensions, tolerances, or component specifications.

Frame, bed, and PCB work holding

The frame supports the motion system and keeps the toolhead, feeders, camera, and board in a useful relationship. The bed and work-holding arrangement must locate the PCB for the machine’s workflow. OpenPnP’s overview says t-slot aluminum extrusion is the most common frame material in DIY machines; it does not prescribe a universal frame size or stiffness target.

Motion system and control

Axes need motors, drivers, a motion controller, and a mechanism to convert rotary motion into linear travel. Designs may use steppers or servos and different mechanical arrangements. Choose them as part of a documented design and confirm that its controller and configuration work with the intended software; a generic controller should not be assumed compatible.

Vacuum, nozzle, and pickup

Pickup hardware can include a vacuum pump, solenoid valve, tubing, sensors, and a blow-off function. The nozzle must suit the parts the machine is expected to handle. The cited project documentation does not establish a universally suitable pump or nozzle specification, so select these against the design’s current documentation and the components being placed.

Vision and alignment

Cameras, lenses, and lighting support the machine’s alignment workflow. A design may use cameras in different positions: PixiePlacer, for example, documents both up-facing and down-facing cameras. Camera placement, optics, lighting, and calibration are design-specific. The available documentation does not establish a universal accuracy figure or minimum component size.

Feeders and board fixtures

Feeders present components in a repeatable position for pickup. OpenPnP documents multiple feeder designs, including tape and strip approaches. PixiePlacer documents parametric strip and automatic feeder variants, as well as a PCB holder. Check that the feeder implementation suits the component packaging, tape format, and capacity you intend to use.

Software and machine configuration

Software connects the machine’s motion, camera, feeders, and placement jobs. OpenPnP is one documented open-source path, but hardware compatibility and configuration remain part of the build. Confirm support for the selected controller and peripherals, then follow the chosen project’s configuration and calibration instructions.

How to choose a documented build path

Use project documentation as a design-specific starting point, not as a universal recipe. For each candidate, check the frame and work area, motion architecture, feeder integration, vacuum and nozzle arrangement, vision workflow, software/controller fit, and the completeness and revision status of the BOM and build instructions.

PixiePlacer: a detailed OpenPnP-based example

PixiePlacer’s repository documents a particular DIY OpenPnP machine, including its BOM, frame and axis design, cameras, nozzle changing, solder-paste dispensing, electronics, pneumatics, software, and feeder sections. Its breadth makes it useful for understanding how the subsystems can fit together; its parts list applies to that design, not every homemade machine. Before buying parts, choose a revision and verify each item against that revision’s BOM.

OrionPnP: an explicitly unvalidated prototype

OrionPnP’s project page describes an open-source machine intended to integrate with OpenPnP. The maintainers say it is a prototype under active development, that testing and validation are pending, and that its BOM and schematic may change. Its stated goal of placing at least 0402 parts is a goal, not demonstrated capability.

  • SMT Aautomation Production Equipment Line SMT380 Manufactory Pick and Place Components Making Machine Desktop Assembly

The project estimates around 800 EUR for its proposed complete machine, excluding printed parts. That is a project-specific estimate from the maintainers; the page does not state a year, and the pending validation and changing design details matter when interpreting it.

Opulo LumenPnP: a bounded assembly-time reference

Opulo’s assembly documentation gives an estimate of about eight hours for a particular documented build number, assuming its printed parts are ready. The page does not state a year. Treat that as an estimate for that documented build and preparation state, not as a general DIY assembly-time prediction.

OpenPnP’s affordability goal is not a price quote

The OpenPnP project page states an “under $1,000” affordability goal. The page does not state a year, and the figure is a project goal rather than a verified current build price. Costs for an individual build depend on its design, included parts, and sourcing; the cited figure should not be read as a universal budget.

Plan the build around evidence, not headline claims

Project pages can help establish what a design documents, what it estimates, and what remains unvalidated. They do not provide a controlled comparison of these machines’ speed, placement accuracy, yield, or reliability. Do not rank builds on those performance measures without comparable test evidence.

Before committing to a design, check that its documentation covers the systems your workflow needs and clearly identifies its revision. Verify that the BOM, controller, software configuration, feeder approach, and mechanical parts agree with one another. Where a project labels a capability as a goal or a prototype as awaiting validation, keep that distinction intact in your expectations.
