HomeKit in iOS 18 Lets You Select Your Preferred Home Hub

iOS 18 adds manual preferred-home-hub selection to Apple Home. Here is how to choose an Apple TV or HomePod, understand failover, and fix missing or unreliable settings.

Yes. iOS 18 introduced a manual preferred-home-hub setting in Apple’s Home app. If your home includes multiple HomePods and/or Apple TVs, open Home → More (…) → Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges, turn off Automatic Selection, and choose the Apple TV or HomePod you want Apple to prefer.

This is a preference, not a permanent lock. Other compatible hubs remain available for automatic failover if the selected hub is offline, unavailable, outdated, or unable to serve the home.

What changed in iOS 18?

Before iOS 18, Apple generally selected the active hub automatically from the available Apple TVs and HomePods in your home. Users had little direct control over which device handled home-hub duties.

With the iOS 18 and tvOS 18 Home updates, Apple added a Preferred Home Hub control. The iPhone or iPad is used to configure the setting, but it does not become the hub. Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and compatible Apple TV models as the relevant home-hub devices.

What a Home Hub does

A home hub helps Apple Home provide remote access when you are away, automations, notifications, shared-home control, and related home processing. Apple also requires a home hub for adding Matter accessories to Apple Home and for some Matter and Thread functionality.

“HomeKit” remains the familiar name many people use for Apple’s smart-home platform, but Apple’s current terminology is Apple Home.

An iPad should not be purchased or configured as a new hub: Apple’s current documentation says that iPad is not supported as a home hub on the latest version of Apple Home.

Before choosing a preferred hub

  • Update the iPhone or iPad used to manage the home.
  • Update every Apple TV, HomePod, and HomePod mini that may act as a hub.
  • Keep each hub powered on and connected to the home network.
  • Make sure you are the home owner if a hub needs to be added or configured.
  • If you use Matter accessories, check whether any of them require a Thread-enabled hub.

Updating only the iPhone is not always enough. An outdated Apple TV or HomePod may not appear as an eligible choice or may cause inconsistent hub behavior.

How to select your preferred Home Hub

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  2. On iPhone or iPad, tap the More (…) button. On Mac, click it.
  3. Select Home Settings.
  4. Select Home Hubs & Bridges.
  5. Check the list. The currently active hub appears at the top.
  6. Turn off Automatic Selection.
  7. Choose the Apple TV or HomePod you want Apple to prefer.

Reopen Home Hubs & Bridges after a short wait and confirm that the selected device is shown as preferred or active. Menu presentation can vary slightly by software version, device, region, and the number of eligible hubs in the home.

What “preferred” actually means

The setting tells Apple which eligible hub to use first when automatic selection is disabled. It does not:

  • turn off your other hubs;
  • prevent automatic failover;
  • route every accessory’s radio traffic through one device;
  • repair weak Wi-Fi, router isolation, or poor Thread coverage;
  • add Thread capability to an Apple TV model that does not have it; or
  • make an outdated or unsupported device eligible.

If the preferred hub becomes unavailable, Apple may use another hub. Therefore, “preferred” means use this one when possible, not force every Home operation through this device forever.

Which hub should you choose?

Hub Best fit Important considerations
Apple TV A stationary, continuously powered hub; especially appealing if it has a stable Ethernet connection. Choose a model with the capabilities your accessories need. Some Apple TV models do not support Thread. A wired connection can provide a predictable network path, but Ethernet alone does not guarantee better Apple Home performance.
HomePod mini Compact placement, Siri, room audio, and homes using Thread-based Matter accessories. Thread capability depends on the model and overall setup. Its location and Wi-Fi quality still matter.
HomePod Someone who also wants higher-quality, room-filling audio. It performs the hub role, but its audio benefits—not hub selection alone—should justify the higher cost.

Choose based on compatibility, software parity, power availability, network reliability, physical location, Thread requirements, and whether the Apple TV is routinely unplugged or switched off. If you already have two supported, updated hubs, there is no need to buy another device merely to access this setting.

Matter and Thread: an important distinction

Matter accessories require a home hub for relevant Apple Home functions. Thread-based Matter accessories additionally need an appropriate Thread-enabled Apple Home hub or another supported Thread border-router arrangement.

Not every Apple TV has Thread capability. A HomePod mini or a Thread-capable Apple TV may be more suitable for a home that depends on Thread accessories, but selecting one device does not by itself redesign the home’s Thread network. Accessory placement, border-router coverage, and the specific hardware model still matter. See Apple’s Matter and Thread compatibility guidance.

Why the preferred-hub option may be missing

  1. There is only one eligible hub. Manual selection has little purpose when Apple has no meaningful choice to offer.
  2. Some hubs are outdated. Update all Apple TVs and HomePods, not just the managing iPhone.
  3. The home is still synchronizing. Newly updated devices may take time to appear correctly.
  4. You are not the home owner. Apple says only the owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV to Apple Home as a hub.
  5. A device is not assigned correctly. An Apple TV must be added to a room in Apple Home, and Apple advises checking its default user when setup fails.
  6. A hub is offline. Check power, network access, Apple Account status, and whether the device appears in the hub list.
  7. The home uses incompatible software generations or configuration.
  8. The Home app is showing stale information. Force-quit and reopen Home, then restart the affected hub.

If the selection does not stick

  1. Update the managing iPhone or iPad and every Apple TV and HomePod.
  2. Open Home → More (…) → Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges and confirm that the desired hub is visible and online.
  3. Temporarily enable Automatic Selection, wait for the list to refresh, then disable it and select the preferred hub again.
  4. Restart the Home app.
  5. Restart the selected Apple TV or HomePod.
  6. If several hubs or accessories show intermittent “No Response” messages, restart the router.
  7. Confirm that the hub uses the same Apple Account associated with the home.
  8. Check that iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication are enabled, both of which Apple lists among home-hub requirements and troubleshooting checks.
  9. If an Ethernet-connected Apple TV is associated with a specific connectivity error, test Apple’s documented workaround: connect it to Wi-Fi on the same network as the iPhone or iPad. This is an error-specific troubleshooting step, not a general recommendation that Wi-Fi is better than Ethernet.

When changing hubs will not fix “No Response”

Manual hub selection can help when the wrong hub is genuinely causing the problem. It cannot compensate for a poorly configured network. If accessories remain unreliable, investigate Wi-Fi coverage and interference, router placement, VLAN or multicast and Bonjour handling, Thread border-router placement, accessory firmware, Matter commissioning, VPNs, and third-party security software.

Apple specifically identifies Wi-Fi connectivity, interference, VPNs, and third-party security software as possible causes of Home errors. If selecting another hub changes nothing, the network or accessory—not the hub preference—may be the real fault.

Buying a new hub

Buy a HomePod mini if you want a compact Apple hub with Siri and audio, or if its Thread capability and placement suit a Thread-based setup. Choose an Apple TV 4K if you also need television streaming and can keep it permanently powered and well connected; a wired-capable model may suit a planned network layout. Choose the full-size HomePod only when its audio quality justifies the premium.

Prices and configurations vary by country and change over time, so check Apple’s current HomePod mini, HomePod, and Apple TV 4K pages before buying. Do not purchase an iPad as a new Apple Home hub.
