For a construction-focused watchlist, start with four different kinds of home-improvement exposure: The Home Depot and Lowe’s sell to DIY and professional customers; Builders FirstSource supplies residential builders and contractors; Floor & Decor specializes in hard-surface flooring. Recent company results show mixed operating conditions, not which stock is a good value. The figures below are from different reporting periods and should not be treated as a direct performance ranking.
How to read this home-improvement stock watchlist
“Home improvement stocks” cover distinct business models. Retailers are exposed to customer traffic, project spending and comparable sales. A building-products supplier is more directly exposed to construction activity, housing starts and materials economics. A flooring specialist adds category concentration and store-expansion considerations.
The figures here are operating disclosures, not a valuation screen. They do not establish current share prices, market capitalizations, valuation multiples, dividend yields, analyst expectations or total returns. Use them to identify companies and business drivers to investigate—not as a buy recommendation or a ranking of entry points.
Companies to follow
The Home Depot (NYSE: HD): broad retail exposure
The Home Depot is the broadest large-scale home-improvement retailer in this group. In fiscal 2025, it reported $164.7 billion in sales and $14.2 billion in net earnings. Total comparable sales increased 0.3%, while U.S. comparable sales rose 0.5%; adjusted diluted EPS declined 3.6% to $14.69. Management cited elevated interest rates, strained housing affordability and economic uncertainty as demand headwinds. These are fiscal 2025 results, not evidence of the stock’s current valuation. Lowe’s (NYSE: LOW): retail with Pro, online and services activity
Lowe’s Q2 FY2026 quarter ended July 31, 2026. Sales were $26.0 billion and comparable sales increased 0.2%. Diluted EPS was $4.27 and adjusted diluted EPS was $4.40. Both EPS figures included an $0.11 benefit from IEEPA tariff refunds; Lowe’s also recorded $96 million in pretax costs associated with its acquisitions of Foundation Building Materials and Artisan Design Group. Those items matter when assessing how much of reported quarterly earnings reflects continuing operations.
CEO Marvin R. Ellison said the quarter marked the company’s fifth consecutive quarter of positive comparable sales, with growth in Pro, Online and Home Services despite pressure in discretionary DIY spending. The company’s August 19, 2026 results release provides the quarterly detail; its strategy overview describes its stated priorities.

Builders FirstSource (NYSE: BLDR): contractor and residential-construction supply
Builders FirstSource supplies building products and services for professional residential construction and repair and remodeling, so its demand drivers differ from those of a consumer-facing retailer. For Q2 2026, the quarter ended June 30, net sales were $3.9 billion, down 8.8% year over year. Adjusted EBITDA fell 34.9% to $329.3 million, and the company reported a $3.9 million net loss. It attributed the decline primarily to a lower housing-starts environment, related headwinds and commodity deflation. Housing starts and the company’s conversion of sales into gross profit are therefore important operating measures to monitor. See the Q2 2026 results release and SEC filings.
Floor & Decor (NYSE: FND): hard-surface flooring specialist
Floor & Decor focuses on hard-surface flooring and related installation materials. As of June 25, 2026, it operated 281 warehouse-format stores and five design studios across 39 states. Its specialist assortment and store-expansion economics differ from the broad retail models of Home Depot and Lowe’s. The company’s investor-relations site lists Q2 FY2026 results, but the available overview does not support a direct valuation or performance ranking against the other companies.

The periods and business models differ, so this table is a set of company-specific signals rather than an apples-to-apples ranking. For example, Home Depot’s fiscal-year comparables should not be read as directly equivalent to Lowe’s or Builders FirstSource’s quarterly results.
Practical factors to track across the group
- Demand by customer and project: Separate Pro activity from discretionary DIY spending. For retailers, comparable sales help describe performance at existing stores; for suppliers, housing starts and construction activity are more direct demand context.
- Housing and financing conditions: Interest rates, housing affordability and home turnover can affect project timing and construction demand. A single quarter does not establish a durable trend.
- Margins and earnings conversion: Follow gross profit, operating performance, EPS and cash generation in the latest filings. A sales change alone does not show how much profit the business retained.
- Unusual or acquired-business effects: Read reported and adjusted measures together. Lowe’s disclosed both tariff-refund benefits and acquisition-related costs; Builders FirstSource cited commodity deflation and lower starts as factors in its results.
- Materials, labor and execution: For construction suppliers and retailers alike, commodity prices, labor availability and operating execution can alter the relationship between demand and earnings.
- Valuation and capital allocation: Before comparing potential investments, check dated share prices and current filings for valuation, debt, interest expense, dividends, repurchases and acquisition integration. Those comparisons are not established by the operating figures above.
A construction-focused comparison framework
Rather than asking which name is “best” based on one reported growth rate, match the company to the exposure you want to understand:

- Broad home-improvement retail: Compare Home Depot and Lowe’s on comparable sales, Pro customer trends, DIY demand, margins and earnings quality.
- Residential construction supply: For Builders FirstSource, follow housing starts, sales, commodity exposure and gross-profit conversion.
- Flooring specialty: For Floor & Decor, examine category demand, store productivity and expansion economics.
One external industry estimate cited secondarily in Builders FirstSource’s FY2025 Form 10-K is a Home Improvement Research Institute forecast of 2.9% growth in professional repair-and-remodel sales in 2026 versus 2025.
