Home Assistant launched the Voice Preview Edition on December 19, 2024: its first official dedicated voice device. Listed at $69 in the United States and €59 in Europe, it is a voice satellite for Home Assistant’s Assist platform—not a standalone smart speaker or smart-home hub.
The device gives Home Assistant users a purpose-built microphone, speaker, controls, and physical microphone cutoff. Where speech is processed—locally, through Home Assistant Cloud, or through another configured service—depends on the user’s setup.

What Home Assistant actually launched
Home Assistant is the open-source smart-home platform. Assist is its built-in voice assistant, used to control compatible devices and entities. The Voice Preview Edition is dedicated hardware that connects to an existing Home Assistant installation and provides a convenient room-based voice interface.

That distinction matters: buying the Voice Preview Edition does not give someone a complete smart-home system. Most of the intelligence and device-control capability comes from Home Assistant running on a separate host.
Why Home Assistant made dedicated hardware
Assist was already available through the Home Assistant mobile app, custom ESPHome devices, and other compatible hardware. The Voice Preview Edition provides a consistent, purpose-built target for the platform, with microphones and audio processing designed for voice interaction.
It also gives developers and the community a common device on which to improve voice recognition, wake-word handling, local processing, and other Assist features. Home Assistant described the launch as part of building an open and privacy-oriented alternative to proprietary voice assistants, rather than simply releasing another music speaker.

The built-in speaker is intended primarily for voice responses, not premium music playback. The 3.5 mm output allows users to connect external audio equipment when better sound is required.
What the physical mute switch does
The physical switch cuts power to the microphones. That makes it a stronger privacy control than a software-only mute setting because the microphone hardware cannot capture audio while power is cut.

It does not turn off the entire device or prove that every other form of network communication has stopped. The verified function is specifically the removal of power from the microphones.
Local, cloud, and AI processing
“Local” is not an automatic property of the hardware. The Voice Preview Edition is mainly the room endpoint: it captures audio, plays responses, handles physical controls, and communicates over the network. The configured Assist pipeline determines where recognition and response generation happen.
| Processing mode | What it means | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Focused local processing | A limited set of common home-control phrases is processed locally and offline on relatively modest Home Assistant hardware. | Higher privacy, but a narrower command set. |
| Fully local processing | Speech-to-text, intent handling, and text-to-speech remain on the user’s Home Assistant system. | Greater privacy, but more setup and stronger CPU and memory requirements. |
| Home Assistant Cloud | Speech processing is handled through Nabu Casa’s cloud service. | Easier setup and potentially better performance on less powerful hardware, but it requires connectivity and a cloud service. |
| LLM-assisted Assist | Assist can be connected to supported large language models for more conversational interactions. | Capabilities, privacy, cost, and performance depend on the selected provider and configuration. |
Users seeking an entirely offline system need to configure local speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and wake-word components, and provide sufficient processing power. Buying the Voice Preview Edition alone does not guarantee zero cloud exposure.
What buyers need before setup
- A running Home Assistant installation and a compatible version.
- A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and USB-C power.
- A configured Assist voice pipeline.
- Home Assistant entities exposed to Assist with clear, unambiguous names.
- Optional local speech components or Home Assistant Cloud, depending on the chosen processing model.
- A sufficiently capable Home Assistant host for fully local speech or LLM features.
Setup is therefore closer to adding a networked endpoint to an existing smart-home system than plugging in an independent consumer speaker. A reader who does not already run Home Assistant may need a host such as Home Assistant Green or another compatible computer before the voice device becomes useful.
What it can control
Assist can control devices and entities already available in Home Assistant, including lights, switches, fans, thermostats, scenes, scripts, media devices, and other supported equipment. Typical requests might include turning off downstairs lights, activating a scene, adjusting a thermostat, or changing a fan setting.

The result depends on the relevant integration, entity exposure, naming, language support, and voice pipeline. A well-equipped microphone does not compensate for an entity that has not been exposed to Assist or has an ambiguous name.
General knowledge, open-ended conversations, and multi-turn AI responses are not guaranteed built-in functions. They depend on optional integrations, including supported LLM configurations.
Preview status and post-launch development
The “Preview Edition” label is important. Home Assistant launched the hardware while voice support was still developing across languages, recognition quality, response speed, and use cases. The device was intended partly to help the community develop the wider Assist ecosystem.
Home Assistant later reported improvements involving Speech-to-Phrase, fully local and offline voice control, firmware, LLM integration, and language support. Those updates mean launch-era limitations should not automatically be treated as unchanged in 2026, but they do not turn the device into an independent Alexa-style speaker. Its capabilities remain tied to Home Assistant and the selected pipeline.
Home Assistant said the first production run sold out 23 minutes after the announcement in a February 2025 development update. That indicates strong early interest, but it is not independent evidence of mainstream adoption or a measure of product quality.

Price and value
The original launch announcement listed a recommended price of $59. The current official product page lists a recommended MSRP of $69 in the United States and €59 in Europe, with regional pricing potentially varying. The current price should be used when budgeting rather than the original launch figure. See the official product page for current availability and pricing.
The device’s value is strongest for an existing Home Assistant user who wants a consistent voice endpoint, a physical microphone cutoff, open firmware and hardware, and the option of local processing. It is less compelling for someone who must first build a Home Assistant server or wants a high-quality standalone music speaker.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limitations to consider
- It is not a hub: a separate Home Assistant system is required.
- It is not automatically local: local processing requires the right software configuration and adequate host hardware.
- Setup is more technical: users may need to configure integrations, exposed entities, pipelines, languages, wake words, and speech components.
- It remains a preview product: support and performance can vary by language and configuration.
- It is not a premium music speaker: external audio equipment may be preferable for music.
- Cloud dependence varies: cloud pipelines need connectivity, while fully local pipelines demand more hardware and maintenance.
Alternatives to the official device
Home Assistant companion app
The official mobile app is the lowest-cost way to try Assist. It avoids dedicated hardware, although it is less convenient for always-available, room-to-room hands-free control.
DIY ESPHome voice satellite
Users can build a voice endpoint from compatible boards and audio components using ESPHome. This can offer lower cost and more customization, but requires sourcing parts, assembling hardware, flashing firmware, and troubleshooting microphone and speaker performance.
Third-party voice hardware
ESPHome-compatible products, including development hardware from vendors such as Seeed Studio, can offer different form factors or component choices. Support, enclosure quality, firmware compatibility, and audio performance may be less standardized than with the official device.
Best Value
- Designed for Home Assistant Voice & Music Workflows: Preloaded with Home Assistant Voice Assistant and Music Assistant. Functions as both a voice input terminal and an audio playback endpoint.
- Dual Microphones for Voice Capture: Built with dual digital microphones for wake word or button-activated voice capture. Audio is streamed to the Home Assistant voice pipeline.
- Integrated 3W Speaker for Direct Playback: The built-in 3W/4Ω speaker supports TTS playback, Music Assistant streaming, and system audio without external speakers.
- Linux-Based Local Operation: Runs a lightweight Linux system on a quad-core ARM A53 CPU with 256MB RAM and 512MB flash for local audio processing.
- Development & Debugging Capabilities: Supports firmware flashing, and also provides access to live logs, on-device editing—suitable for routine development or issue diagnosis.
Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home
Mainstream platforms are generally easier to set up and often stronger for general questions, broad consumer services, and turnkey audio. Home Assistant’s advantage is greater control over integrations, privacy choices, local processing, and customization. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve and more responsibility for maintaining the system.
Who should buy it?
Buy the Voice Preview Edition if you already run Home Assistant and want a dedicated voice endpoint with a physical microphone power cutoff, open customization options, and a choice between local and cloud-assisted processing.
Consider starting with Home Assistant itself—possibly using Home Assistant Green—if you do not yet have a server. Try the companion app first if you are unsure whether voice control fits your routines. Choose DIY ESPHome hardware if lower cost and experimentation matter more than appliance-like setup.
