It cuts a round tenon on the end of a wooden piece so it can fit a matching hole—for example, a wheel spoke fitted into a wheel’s felloe. Fixed and adjustable versions were made, but the tool is now principally of historical interest.
What a hollow auger does
A hollow auger shapes a cylindrical tenon: the narrowed, round end of one wooden part that fits into a hole in another. Wheelwrights used it to make spoke ends fit wheel felloes. WOOD Magazine also describes its use by chairmakers and laddermakers, where a consistent tenon helped produce repeatable joints.
Although its name includes “auger,” its defining job is shaping the outside of a wooden tenon—not boring a hole. WOOD Magazine describes the tool as working somewhat like a plug cutter, but for forming a tenon.
How it differs from an ordinary auger bit
A conventional auger bit bores a hole in wood. ICS Cutting Tools describes designs with a screw point to locate and feed the bit, cutting edges that remove wood, and a flute that carries chips out of the hole. Its product types include solid-center bits for hand braces and general wood boring, ship augers for heavy timber, and timber augers for demanding boring work.

|---|---|---|
| Hollow auger | Cut the outside of wood to form a cylindrical tenon. | Historically used by woodworkers such as wheelwrights; fixed and adjustable forms existed. WOOD Magazine |
| Conventional auger bit | Bore a hole in wood. | Used with a compatible hand brace or other suitable boring setup; bit design determines application. ICS Cutting Tools |
| Lamp auger | Bore a centered, lengthwise hole in turned work. | Used on a lathe with suitable hollow-center or spindle access; it does not cut a tenon. Highland Woodworking |
These tools are not interchangeable. A boring bit makes an opening; a hollow auger cuts a round projection sized to fit an opening. The lamp auger also bores a hole, but does so through turned stock on a lathe.
Historical use and decline
According to WOOD Magazine’s January 20, 2017 account, hollow augers had been used in America since the Revolutionary era. They helped craftsmen make uniform tenons for repeated joints. The magazine credits Abel Conant of Pepperville, Massachusetts, with receiving the first U.S. patent for a hollow auger in 1829, and reports that 85 styles had been patented by December 5, 1911. Those figures describe the historical patent record, not present-day product availability.

The tool’s market contracted as demand for wooden wheels fell after World War I and steel wheels displaced them. WOOD Magazine says the few remaining models disappeared from the market in the late 1940s. That does not mean vintage examples cannot still exist; it means the article does not establish a current production model or direct modern replacement for tenon cutting.

Wood-boring auger bits
Choose an ordinary auger bit when the job is to drill a hole in wood. Its point, cutters, and chip-clearing flute serve that boring task; they do not establish that it can cut a cylindrical tenon.

Lamp augers
A lamp auger is a long bit for boring a centered longitudinal hole in turned work on a lathe. Highland Woodworking’s description says it is intended for end grain, should be advanced in small increments with chips cleared, and depends on suitable hollow headstock or tailstock access and a hollow center. It cuts only when the wood turns counter-clockwise. These setup details apply to the cited lamp-auger use, not to hollow-auger tenon cutting.
Mortiser chisels and bits
A mortiser is another distinct tool arrangement: its auger bit cuts a round hole while a hollow square chisel squares the opening. WorkSafe New Zealand lists contact with the auger, moving timber, noise, and dust among the hazards, and advises clamping the timber securely and using eye, ear, and dust protection. The agency notes that this guidance has not been updated to reflect current legislation, so follow current local requirements and the machine maker’s instructions.
