Holcim UK began bringing aggregate by rail into the Port of Sunderland in June 2026, creating an alternative supply route for asphalt production in the North East after changing supply arrangements at the Port of Tyne put pressure on established logistics. Holcim expects the route to carry around 100,000 tonnes in its first 12 months; that figure is a forecast, not a completed total.
How the Sunderland route works
Holcim says the service began on 9 June 2026 and currently runs at about one train a week. Each train has 19 open box wagons and carries approximately 1,425 tonnes of aggregate. The material is brought into Sunderland by rail for regional asphalt production, primarily supporting Northumbrian Roads, with additional supply to Hulands Asphalt and the wider market. Holcim UK

Open box wagons can be unloaded using existing port equipment, so the route does not require major new fixed infrastructure, according to Holcim. The company names GB Railfreight and the Port of Sunderland as partners. Agg-Net reports that the port can store up to 6,000 tonnes. Agg-Net Holcim UK

Why Holcim chose Sunderland
Holcim says changing supply arrangements at the Port of Tyne made its established logistics routes more challenging. Sunderland offered an existing railhead and port capabilities able to receive, store and unload the aggregate. The company says road haulage was not commercially realistic for the required volume; ship movements, meanwhile, depend on vessel size, the source of the material and port capacity. These are Holcim’s stated operational and commercial reasons, not an independently verified comparison of costs.

In Holcim’s account, using infrastructure already in place also offers scope to increase volumes without major new fixed works. Regional Operations Manager Mustapha Nyass said the route would give customers “a stronger, more resilient way to get essential materials into the market”. General Manager – Rail Damien Preece said successful rail operations depend on the material, wagons, paths, route knowledge and a receiving site that can safely handle the flow. Both comments are from the company’s announcement and represent its perspective. Holcim UK announcement
Deliveries so far and the first-year forecast
Agg-Net reported that 14 services had delivered nearly 20,000 tonnes by 7 October 2026. Holcim’s estimate of around 100,000 tonnes covers the first 12 months and remains a forecast. It should not be read as tonnage already delivered. Agg-Net Holcim UK

What the route means for North East asphalt supply
The route adds a rail-based option for moving aggregate into the region and is intended to support asphalt production and the customers who depend on it. Its practical significance is the use of an existing railhead, unloading equipment and storage capacity to address a disruption to established supply arrangements. Whether it proves more economical or lower-emission than other modes cannot be established from the published figures: the sources do not provide an independent cost or emissions comparison.
