HexClad Cookware Review 2025: Is the Hybrid Pan Worth It?

HexClad’s TerraBond hybrid cookware offers a compromise between nonstick convenience and stainless-steel browning. Our review covers mixed cooking tests, coating history, care, pricing, warranty, and who should buy it.

Short answer: HexClad is a premium convenience compromise, not a replacement for both a true nonstick skillet and a high-performance stainless-steel pan. Current TerraBond models can provide easier release than ordinary stainless steel while still browning proteins and vegetables, but they work best with moderate heat and some cooking fat. Independent testing has also raised concerns about sticking and coating durability, making the price difficult to justify for every buyer.

For a 2025 purchase, the most important step is identifying the product generation. Current TerraBond cookware is marketed as PTFE- and PFAS-free, while older HexClad products were associated with different coating claims and litigation. If the hybrid format appeals to you, buying one 10- or 12-inch pan—preferably during a sale—is a lower-risk choice than immediately buying the full set.

HexClad review at a glance

Category Verdict
Best use Everyday cooking when you want easier cleanup than stainless steel but more browning ability than a smooth nonstick pan
Best buyer A cook who wants one induction-compatible pan for eggs, proteins, vegetables, sauces, and one-pan meals
Weakest use Completely oil-free eggs, maximum-heat searing, intensive fond development, or long-term coating durability
Current coating TerraBond ceramic coating, marketed by HexClad as free from PTFE, PFAS, lead, and cadmium
Cooktop compatibility Induction, gas, and electric, according to current HexClad product information
Oven rating Up to 900°F for the pan itself; glass lids are limited to 400°F
Cleaning Dishwasher safe by the manufacturer’s classification, although hand washing is recommended for preserving the finish
Warranty Lifetime limited warranty for qualifying manufacturer defects, not ordinary coating wear or misuse
Overall value Reasonable on sale for the right user; weak at full price if you mainly want effortless nonstick release or restaurant-style stainless searing

What is HexClad cookware?

HexClad uses a hybrid cooking surface rather than a uniformly smooth nonstick coating. Its pans have a hexagonal pattern made from laser-etched stainless-steel ridges. Ceramic nonstick coating sits in the recessed valleys, while the pan’s tri-ply construction uses an aluminum core to transfer heat between stainless-steel layers.

#1 Best Overall
Blue Diamond Hybrid 12 Piece Stainless Steel Nonstick Cookware Set
  • DIAMOND BOND HYBRID TECHNOLOGY: Our proprietary technology fuses tri-ply stainless steel with a laser-etched, diamond-textured surface and a PFAS-free ceramic nonstick coating. This combination delivers 10X more durability, 6X faster heat response, and 4X longer-lasting nonstick.
  • STAINLESS STEEL TRI-PLY 12-PIECE COOKWARE SET: Includes a 1.57QT & 3QTsaucepans with lids, 5.19QT stockpot with lid, 8” frypan, 10” frypan, 2.78QT sauté pan with lid, solid turner, and slotted spoon—perfect for boiling, frying, sautéing, simmering, and more for all your kitchen essential needs.
  • PFAS-FREE CERAMIC NONSTICK: Nonstick coating is made without intentionally added PFAS
  • BUILT FOR LASTING DURABILITY: Heavy-duty, scratch-resistant construction withstands 850°F oven/broiler use (glass lids to 425°F). Cast riveted handles provide a secure grip, while chip-resistant, wrapped rims facilitate clean pouring. Tempered glass lids lock in flavor, and dishwasher safe design makes cleanup effortless.
  • 10X MORE METAL UTENSIL SAFE: Ultra-tough ceramic coating stands up to metal utensils without compromising nonstick performance. Silicone tools recommended.

In practical terms, the food touches a combination of stainless steel and ceramic-coated areas. The stainless peaks are intended to support browning and protect portions of the coating from casual utensil contact. The coated valleys provide additional food release. That design is why HexClad presents the pans as a middle ground between stainless steel and nonstick cookware.

That description should not be read as proof that one pan performs exactly like stainless steel, cast iron, and dedicated nonstick cookware at the same time. The hybrid surface changes the compromises; it does not remove them. A smooth nonstick skillet is usually better for effortless eggs, while fully clad stainless steel or cast iron is generally more direct for very high heat and deep fond development.

TerraBond versus older HexClad cookware

Older and current HexClad products should not be treated as interchangeable. The current product line uses TerraBond, a proprietary ceramic coating that HexClad markets as free from PTFE, PFAS, lead, and cadmium. HexClad’s current 12-piece product page also reports third-party laboratory testing by Light Labs. The listed compounds—including PFOS, PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, PFBS, and PFNA—were reported as non-detect in that test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are manufacturer-published claims and test results for the specified current product. They are not an independent universal certification of every HexClad pan ever sold, and HexClad does not publicly disclose the complete proprietary ceramic formulation. A marketplace listing that simply says “PFAS-free” is therefore not enough to establish which generation or exact model you are buying.

What the settlement does—and does not—mean

Earlier HexClad products became associated with litigation over marketing descriptions such as “non-toxic,” “PFAS Free,” and “PFOA Free.” HexClad denied wrongdoing. The approved settlement and final-approval order permanently prohibit marketing a product that contains PTFE or any PFAS-family chemical with those descriptions.

The settlement concerns labeling and marketing claims. It does not establish that ordinary use of the cookware caused personal injury. It also does not mean that every product sold under the HexClad name has the same coating as current TerraBond cookware.

How to check a 2025 listing

  1. Look for the current TerraBond designation in the product title or specifications.
  2. Check the exact model and seller rather than relying on an old review, old packaging, or a generic marketplace headline.
  3. Confirm whether the listing is new, old inventory, or a third-party resale item.
  4. For safety claims, distinguish HexClad’s current product and laboratory statements from claims about the entire historical product line.

How well does HexClad cook?

The available evidence is mixed, and that is more useful than treating one enthusiastic or negative review as definitive. Hands-on editorial tests and laboratory testing have examined different pans, foods, durations, and methods, so their results are not a single controlled benchmark.

Source and method Reported result What it suggests
Homes & Gardens, three months with a 12-inch pan Very good release with eggs, tofu, and halloumi; quick heating; even heat distribution; easy cleanup The hybrid surface can work very well for everyday foods when heat and fat are managed
The Independent, two weeks with the full range Useful compromise for eggs, sauces, breakfasts, slow-cooked meals, and higher-heat dishes; expensive and care-sensitive Versatility is the main attraction, not dominance in one cooking specialty
WIRED, one month of testing Food stuck to the stainless-steel ridges; eggs needed oil or butter; performance was judged inferior to specialized alternatives; rating 5/10 Do not expect effortless smooth-nonstick release or the best stainless-style browning
Consumer Reports laboratory assessment Strong cooking evenness but mediocre later nonstick durability; steel-wool abrasion removed coating down to the stainless steel beneath, although the tested pan still released eggs “Metal-utensil safe” does not mean the coating is immune to wear

The most defensible synthesis is that HexClad can be effective when used with moderate heat, enough fat for the food, and realistic expectations. User results can vary with the pan size, food, cooktop, product generation, seasoning, and cleaning routine.

Eggs and delicate foods: nonstick assistance, not magic

HexClad can release eggs and other delicate foods well for some cooks, but the exposed stainless-steel ridges mean it may not feel as slippery as a smooth dedicated nonstick skillet. WIRED reported that eggs still needed oil or butter and that food stuck to the ridges. Other testers reported very good release, including with eggs and tofu.

The safest expectation is nonstick assistance rather than effortless, oil-free nonstick performance. If your priority is cooking eggs with no fat at all, a smooth dedicated nonstick pan remains the more predictable tool.

HexClad instructs new owners to season the pan before first use. The stated procedure is to use approximately one teaspoon of oil, heat it for two to three minutes over medium-low heat, and then allow the pan to cool before cleaning. The company also says the cookware may improve during the first weeks as cooking fats naturally re-season the surface. This is not the same maintenance routine as seasoning cast iron, but it does mean the pan should not be treated as completely maintenance-free.

Heat control and searing

HexClad says its construction heats quickly and recommends starting at lower temperatures. The company’s guidance says medium heat with HexClad can correspond roughly to medium-high with other cookware because the hybrid construction distributes heat efficiently.

That advice is important because the pan is marketed for searing while still containing a ceramic coating. Steak, burgers, chicken thighs, and vegetables can brown successfully, and some users will experience less sticking than with ordinary stainless steel. However, the strongest sear and deepest fond often benefit from high heat, while repeatedly overheating coated cookware can shorten its useful life. WIRED specifically pointed out this tension.

The pan’s advertised 900°F oven rating should not be confused with a recommendation to repeatedly preheat an empty coated pan over maximum stovetop heat. Oven ratings describe a manufacturer-specified limit under stated conditions; they do not make a coated surface immune to thermal stress or poor cooking technique.

  • HexClad’s Hybrid technology features a laser-etched hexagonal nonstick surface that combines both stainless-steel and our TerraBond ceramic coating for the ultimate sear and easy cleaning.
  • A size for all cooking occasions, our Hybrid 8-inch, 10-inch and 12-inch pans offer the ultimate in versatility in cooking when it comes to frying, sautéing, and simmering.
  • Tri-ply construction with an aluminum core for quicker even heating, it’s safe to use on any home cooktop or stovetop, including induction. HexClad is metal utensil-safe, dishwasher-friendly, and oven-safe up to 900°F. (Tempered glass lids are oven-safe up to 400°F, while stainless steel lids are oven-safe up to 900°F.)
  • HexClad products that are sold by HexClad Cookware are backed by a lifetime warranty from manufacturer's defects. (Commercial and restaurant use excluded).
  • Your purchase includes one 8-inch Pan, one 10-inch Pan, and one 12-inch Pan, each with an accompanying Tempered Glass Lid.

For most meals, begin around medium or medium-low, add the appropriate amount of oil, and increase heat only when the food and recipe require it. If your cooking style centers on aggressive searing, fond formation, and repeated deglazing, fully clad stainless steel or cast iron is a simpler and often better-matched choice.

Build quality and everyday specifications

  • Construction: Tri-ply design with an aluminum core, stainless-steel peaks, and ceramic nonstick valleys.
  • Cooktops: Current product pages list compatibility with induction, gas, and electric cooktops.
  • Utensils: The pans are marketed as metal-utensil safe, but sharp edges, forceful scraping, and repeated abrasion can still damage or wear the coated areas.
  • Oven use: HexClad lists the pan itself as oven safe up to 900°F. Glass lids have a lower 400°F limit.
  • Dishwasher: The cookware is labeled dishwasher safe, although HexClad recommends hand washing.
  • Handle and feel: Homes & Gardens liked the cooking results but disliked the handle personally and said the pan did not feel like heirloom cookware.

The high oven rating, induction compatibility, and hybrid surface make the pans versatile. They do not automatically make the cookware ideal for every task, and a high rating for one component does not transfer to a glass lid or to every older model.

Cleaning and maintenance: what owners should actually do

HexClad’s care guidance creates an apparent contradiction: the cookware is classified as dishwasher safe and metal-utensil safe, but the company still recommends gentler care. The reason is preservation. A pan can survive a particular use while gradually losing its appearance or coating performance through repeated heat, detergent, and abrasion.

Recommended routine

  1. Season before first use. Apply about one teaspoon of oil and heat for two to three minutes over medium-low, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Use moderate heat. Start lower than you would with some conventional cookware, especially when preheating.
  3. Use enough fat for the food. This is particularly important for eggs, fish, tofu, and other foods that readily stick.
  4. Choose gentler utensils. Although metal utensils are permitted by the manufacturer, silicone, wood, or other non-abrasive tools reduce unnecessary wear.
  5. Hand wash when practical. Soak the pan in warm, soapy water and use a sponge. This is the better default for preserving the finish.
  6. Use the dishwasher selectively. Dishwasher heat and detergent can dull the surface. HexClad warns that phosphate-free detergents may etch or pockmark exposed metal.
  7. Address stains without attacking the coating. The care guidance allows more abrasive cleaning for staining because stainless steel is exposed in the patterned surface, but aggressive steel-wool abrasion is a poor choice if coating longevity matters.
  8. Protect the pan during storage. If pans are stacked, use a suitable separator or pan protector to limit scraping between surfaces.

For owners looking to reduce storage friction and accidental scratching, silicone utensils for nonstick pans and pan protectors are sensible accessories. They are not required to use HexClad, but they support the gentler care routine that the warranty exclusions make important.

Existing owners who have lost or damaged a lid can also look for a HexClad replacement lid matched to the correct 8-, 10-, or 12-inch pan. Confirm the diameter and exact model before purchasing.

Warranty and returns

HexClad advertises a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects. The current warranty information limits coverage to qualifying U.S. consumer purchases made from HexClad or authorized channels, generally with proof of purchase. Commercial use, misuse, improper care, excessive heat, sharp utensils, neglect, lack of seasoning, and normal cosmetic wear are excluded.

That means the lifetime warranty should not be interpreted as insurance against ordinary coating degradation, scratches, discoloration, or dissatisfaction with the pan’s cooking behavior. A replacement may be offered for a qualifying defect, but the customer may be responsible for return shipping.

HexClad also advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee, with return shipping the customer’s responsibility. For most buyers, this return period is more relevant than the lifetime warranty: it provides an opportunity to decide whether the handle, weight, release, and heat response suit your cooking before assuming the pan will meet your expectations indefinitely.

Price and value in 2025

HexClad is expensive for coated cookware. In the U.S. price snapshot used for this review, the official site listed the 8-inch Hybrid Fry Pan at $129, the 10-inch at $149, and the 12-inch at $179. The 6-piece fry-pan set with lids was listed at $399. The 12-piece Hybrid Pots & Pans Set was listed at $699 against a stated $999 value.

These figures are a research snapshot, not a guaranteed current price. HexClad promotions, retailer prices, availability, and exact model descriptions change, so check the live listing before buying. Products have been listed through the official HexClad store and retailers such as Walmart, but a retailer listing should still be checked for the TerraBond generation and seller identity.

Which purchase makes the most sense?

One 10- or 12-inch pan: This is the most sensible starting point for most households. The 12-inch size is useful for larger portions and one-pan meals, while the 10-inch version may be easier to handle on smaller burners or for one- and two-person cooking. If the product fits your habits, the HexClad 12-inch hybrid frying pan is the flagship-size option to investigate—but verify the current listing and TerraBond generation before ordering.

Six-piece fry-pan set: The 8-, 10-, and 12-inch pans with lids can make sense if you regularly use all three sizes and want covered skillets. The HexClad 6-piece cookware set is less risky than the full pots-and-pans set because it concentrates the purchase on the pieces most likely to be used frequently.

Twelve-piece set: The full set is defensible when you are replacing most of your cookware and will use the included fry pans, saucepans, and stockpot. It is a poor value if several pieces will remain in a cupboard. Before paying the promotional price for a HexClad 12-piece cookware set, list the pieces you currently use and compare that list with the actual contents.

The value case improves when the pan is discounted and when you specifically want one surface that works on induction, gas, and electric cooktops while tolerating more casual utensil contact than ordinary smooth nonstick. The value case weakens at full price because a dedicated nonstick skillet generally offers more effortless release, while stainless steel or cast iron generally offers stronger high-heat performance and a longer uncoated service life.

HexClad compared with the alternatives

If your priority is… Better starting point Why HexClad may or may not fit
Easy, low-fat eggs and delicate foods Smooth dedicated nonstick HexClad can release eggs, but the exposed ridges may require oil or butter and can collect stuck food
High-heat searing and fond Fully clad stainless steel or cast iron HexClad can brown food, but the coating makes extreme heat less attractive and the ridges may not brown like a fully exposed metal surface
One versatile everyday pan HexClad is a reasonable candidate Its value comes from combining moderate nonstick assistance, browning, induction compatibility, and easy cleanup
Maximum longevity with no coating Stainless steel, cast iron, or carbon steel HexClad remains a coated pan and should not be expected to last like uncoated cookware
Lowest upfront cost Entry-level dedicated cookware HexClad’s premium pricing is hard to justify unless its specific hybrid compromise solves a real problem

Who should buy HexClad?

HexClad is a reasonable fit if you:

  • Want one versatile pan for proteins, vegetables, eggs, sauces, and one-pan meals.
  • Use induction, gas, or electric and want broad cooktop compatibility.
  • Prefer easier cleanup than traditional stainless steel.
  • Want more browning capability and utensil tolerance than you associate with a conventional smooth nonstick pan.
  • Are willing to use moderate heat and some oil rather than demand completely oil-free cooking.
  • Can buy at a sale price or are replacing several pieces at once.

HexClad is a weak fit if you:

  • Expect completely oil-free eggs every time.
  • Frequently preheat pans at maximum stovetop heat.
  • Build meals around intense fond development and aggressive deglazing.
  • Want the lowest-cost cookware that performs adequately.
  • Expect a coated pan to last like stainless steel, cast iron, or carbon steel.
  • Plan to rely heavily on metal scrubbing or harsh dishwasher cycles.

Final verdict

HexClad’s hybrid design is real and useful, but its marketing should be translated into more modest terms: the pan combines some nonstick assistance with some stainless-style browning and broad compatibility. It does not fully replace the best qualities of either specialized cookware category.

Current TerraBond models address the brand’s older coating-label controversy by being marketed separately as PTFE- and PFAS-free, with HexClad publishing third-party test results for a current 12-piece set. Buyers should still verify the exact generation rather than generalize the claim to every HexClad product ever sold.

The cooking evidence remains mixed. Homes & Gardens and The Independent found strong everyday release and versatility, while WIRED reported sticking and questioned the price. Consumer Reports found excellent evenness but mediocre nonstick durability under abrasion. Taken together, those findings support buying one pan if the hybrid format matches your habits—not assuming that an expensive full set will solve every cookware problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Our recommendation: Buy one current TerraBond 10- or 12-inch pan on sale if you want a versatile middle ground and are comfortable using moderate heat, oil, and careful cleaning. Skip HexClad if your first priorities are oil-free eggs, maximum-heat searing, the lowest price, or uncoated longevity. Buy the full set only when you genuinely need and will use every included piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is current HexClad cookware PFAS-free and PTFE-free?

Current TerraBond cookware is marketed by HexClad as free from PTFE and PFAS, as well as lead and cadmium. HexClad’s current 12-piece product page reports Light Labs testing in which listed compounds were non-detect. These are manufacturer-published claims for the specified current product, not proof that every HexClad pan ever sold has the same coating or formulation.

Does HexClad really need oil?

Usually, yes. Some testers achieved very good release with eggs and delicate foods, but other testing found that eggs needed oil or butter and that food could stick to the exposed stainless-steel ridges. HexClad should be treated as easier-release cookware, not guaranteed oil-free nonstick cookware.

Can you use metal utensils with HexClad?

HexClad markets current pans as metal-utensil safe, but that does not make the coating immune to wear. Consumer Reports reported that steel-wool abrasion removed coating down to the stainless steel beneath. Silicone, wood, or other non-abrasive utensils are the safer choice for long-term preservation.

Can HexClad go in the oven?

Current HexClad product information lists the pan itself as oven safe up to 900°F, while glass lids have a lower 400°F limit. Confirm the rating for your exact model and do not confuse the oven limit with a recommendation to repeatedly overheat an empty coated pan on the stovetop.

Is the HexClad 12-piece set worth it?

It can make sense if you are replacing most of your cookware and will use the included fry pans, saucepans, and stockpot. For most households, one 10- or 12-inch pan is a lower-risk purchase. The full set is difficult to justify if you mainly want one skillet or if several pieces will go unused.

Does the lifetime HexClad warranty cover coating wear?

Not generally. The warranty covers qualifying manufacturer defects and excludes misuse, improper care, excessive heat, sharp utensils, lack of seasoning, normal cosmetic wear, and other listed exclusions. Ordinary coating degradation or dissatisfaction with performance is not automatically a warranty defect.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: HexClad is worth considering as a premium hybrid pan, especially on sale and in the current TerraBond generation. It is not the best choice for every cooking style: dedicated nonstick is more predictable for delicate, low-fat cooking, while stainless steel or cast iron is better for extreme heat and deep browning. Start with one pan, care for it gently, and do not buy the full set unless you will use every piece.
