HENN describes CarbonBudget as a free digital tool for estimating a building project’s CO₂ budget in Europe. Its announcement names location, completion year and area as inputs, and says the tool assesses embodied and operational emissions against a 1.5°C pathway. HENN scheduled its public launch for 24 September 2026, but the available official descriptions do not independently confirm that the tool is live today.
What is HENN’s CarbonBudget?
CarbonBudget is HENN’s project-level tool for placing building emissions in relation to an allocated carbon budget. HENN says it is intended to help architects, engineers, developers, researchers and policymakers understand climate boundaries early enough to inform design decisions. Its stated scope is building projects located in Europe.
HENN frames the tool around both embodied emissions and operational emissions. In practical terms, that is meant to connect the carbon associated with a building and its operation to a project-specific budget, rather than simply report a material’s footprint. The company says the assessment is aligned with the global 1.5°C target. HENN’s 16 September 2026 event announcement scheduled the tool’s public launch for 24 September 2026; the official overview describes its purpose and approach.
What information does a project calculation use?
HENN’s launch announcement names three inputs:
- Location: where the project is situated.
- Year of completion: when the building is expected to be completed.
- Area: the project’s area.
These are the inputs identified in the announcement, not a confirmed exhaustive list. HENN also says building type matters because energy needs differ—for example, a hospital or laboratory does not have the same energy profile as an office. The public description does not establish whether building type is entered directly, how it affects a result, or whether other project details are requested.

- WORKS IN UNITS THAT WORK FOR YOU -- enter dimensions directly in feet, inches, fractions, yards and meters including square and cubic formats and then instantly convert to any standard building unit you prefer for consistent solutions that makes sense to you
- SET A PROJECT’S MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS to define and use stored values for estimating, including custom tile size, grout gaps, board widths, fence post spacing, paint coverage and more so you can quickly determine your material requirements and costs
- BUILT-IN FUNCTION KEYS help you easily find the number of boards or posts based on standard board lengths and stored measurements, so you get the fencing or decking material quantities you need to finish the job without costly overages or underages
- FIGURE OUT FLOORING REQUIREMENTS with built-in standard carpet roll lengths, linoleum square and roll sizes, custom tile sizes with various grout widths to quickly calculate coverage area and square yards you need based on an entered or calculated floor area
- Works directly in yards, feet, inches, fractions and meters – including square and cubic formats. No need to convert to decimals.
How does CarbonBudget say it assesses emissions?
HENN says CarbonBudget draws on recognized scientific decarbonization pathways and integrates data from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor (CRREM). The company also says it accounts for the continuing decarbonization of European electricity grids. These are HENN’s descriptions of its methodology.
The published overview does not provide calculation equations, detailed assumptions, sensitivity analysis or independent validation results. A project team therefore cannot reproduce or audit a calculation from the public description alone, and the available material is not evidence that the tool has been independently validated. Treat a result as a planning reference from HENN’s model, not as a substitute for a project-specific life-cycle assessment or documented design and procurement decisions.

Who may find it useful—and what can it tell them?
CarbonBudget’s stated purpose is to help professional users understand whether life-cycle assessment values sit inside or outside an allocated project CO₂ budget. That framing may be useful during early design discussions, when teams are weighing a project’s climate limits against choices that affect its form, use and energy needs.
HENN says the tool is free for professional and commercial use. Its public description does not establish that a calculated budget is a certification, regulatory determination or verified emissions inventory. Teams should confirm the tool’s assumptions and scope before using an output in a formal assessment or commitment.

HENN states a European scope for CarbonBudget. Its overview’s reference to European electricity-grid decarbonization reinforces that boundary. The company’s public material does not establish that the tool supports projects elsewhere, so do not assume a result is suitable for a non-European location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does it differ from EC3?
EC3 is an adjacent resource, not a like-for-like replacement. Building Transparency describes EC3 as a free tool for comparing building materials using Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), including for planning or comparing project embodied carbon. CarbonBudget, by contrast, is presented by HENN as a project-specific budget tool that addresses embodied and operational emissions against a climate pathway.

| Resource | Stated focus | Geographic scope or basis |
|---|---|---|
| HENN CarbonBudget | Project-specific CO₂ budget; HENN says it assesses embodied and operational emissions | Building projects in Europe, according to HENN |
| EC3 | Material comparison and project embodied-carbon planning using EPD data | Not stated in the cited description; see Building Transparency’s EC3 overview |
The tools address different questions: a project budget versus material and EPD comparisons. The available descriptions do not establish that either tool can replace a detailed, project-specific assessment.
Quick Recap
What to check before relying on a result
- Confirm that CarbonBudget is currently accessible and that its live documentation matches the announced scope.
- Check which project inputs and building-type assumptions are used, rather than assuming the three announced fields are the complete set.
- Ask what life-cycle stages and emissions boundaries the calculation includes for the specific project type.
- Review the published assumptions and data sources, and document any additional assessment needed for design, compliance or reporting.
