A tick stick is a handheld tool for removing ticks, but the name covers different designs—and there is no evidence here that any branded stick works better than plain tweezers. For an attached tick, the CDC recommends clean, fine-tipped tweezers: grasp close to the skin and pull steadily without twisting or jerking.
What is a tick stick?
“Tick stick” is a product name used for more than one kind of tick-removal tool. One design is described by Drool by Dr. Chris Brown as a curved remover for animals, used with a lever-and-twist action. TickStickShop describes a different device that slides around a tick and lifts with steady pressure, then encapsulates it. These are vendor descriptions, not evidence that either design is clinically more effective.
The CDC’s advice applies regardless of the product name: remove an attached tick with clean, fine-tipped tweezers, grasping it close to the skin and pulling with steady, even pressure without twisting or jerking. The CDC says plain tweezers work well, although removal devices are also available. A product’s instructions should not override that public-health guidance.
How to remove an attached tick
- Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
- Pull steadily. Use even pressure; do not twist or jerk the tick.
- Clean up. Wash the bite area and your hands with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or hand sanitizer.
Remove the tick promptly rather than waiting to find a particular device or for a clinician to remove it. For guidance on individual circumstances, contact a clinician; for a tick on an animal, consult a veterinarian.

Should you save the tick for testing?
Not to decide whether you need treatment. The CDC generally does not recommend commercial tick testing for treatment decisions. A positive result on a tick does not show that it infected you, and a negative result can be falsely reassuring if a different tick was responsible. Laboratories that test ticks may not meet the quality standards used by clinical diagnostic laboratories.
What to watch for after a bite
Watch for a rash or fever in the days to weeks after removing a tick, and contact a doctor if either develops. A tick test cannot rule out infection, and the CDC guidance does not mean every tick bite requires antibiotics.

What to keep available
Clean, fine-tipped tweezers are a practical option to keep on hand. If you choose a removal device, check that it is intended for the person or animal you are helping and that its use is consistent with the CDC’s steady, non-twisting technique. The available sources do not establish that one tick-stick brand is safer or more effective than another.
