Harbor Freight’s 4375W vs. Honda’s EG4000 Generator: What’s the Difference?

The current Harbor Freight PREDATOR 4375W generator (SKU 72912) and Honda EG4000CLAN share a 3,500-watt continuous-output baseline, but differ in starting capacity, outlets, weight, runtime claims, warranty and price. Harbor Freight lists 4,375 starting watts; Honda lists 4,000 maximum watts. The comparison below is specific to SKU 72912—not every older PREDATOR model carrying a 4375W label.

Which models are being compared?

Harbor Freight’s current California-compliant PREDATOR 4375W listing is SKU 72912. Honda’s model is the EG4000CLAN, listed on Honda’s EG4000 product page. Both are recoil-start, gasoline generators with 120/240V AC output and GFCI-protected 120V receptacles. Harbor Freight also lists 12V DC output; Honda does not list DC output for the EG4000.

SKU matters: Harbor Freight has older 4375W products, including SKU 63962 and SKU 59207. Their specifications, certification and equipment should not be assumed to match SKU 72912. Check the item number on the generator and its manual before ordering parts or applying any comparison to an older unit.

Power output: the same running rating, different starting peak

Harbor Freight lists SKU 72912 at 3,500W maximum running and 4,375W maximum starting output. Honda lists the EG4000 at 3,500W rated and 4,000W maximum output. The shared 3,500W figure is the useful baseline for loads that run continuously; the higher starting figures describe short-term capacity for starting equipment and are not continuous ratings.

Neither the generator’s headline wattage nor its 120/240V capability means every receptacle can supply the full output. Check the amperage and voltage rating of the specific outlet, its breaker, and the appliance or tool requirements. Add the running loads that may operate together, then account for the starting demand of motors such as pumps or compressors. The combination must fit both the generator’s rated output and the limits of the outlet and circuit you plan to use.

The outlet mix may matter more than a small difference in peak watts. Match the plug, voltage and circuit rating to the equipment; use an appropriately rated cord, and do not treat an adapter as a way to increase a receptacle’s capacity.

Runtime, fuel and sound ratings

Harbor Freight lists up to 16 hours at 50% load for SKU 72912. Honda lists 14.8 hours per tank at half load and specifies a 6.3-gallon fuel capacity. These are manufacturer-published figures, not results from a side-by-side test; actual runtime changes with load and operating conditions. Harbor Freight’s captured specifications do not state the tank capacity.

Harbor Freight lists 72.5 dB(A), without a test condition specified in the captured product information. Honda lists 67 dB(A) at rated load and 66 dB(A) at 50% load. Because the Harbor Freight figure has no stated load condition here, the sound numbers are not a like-for-like comparison.

Weight, engine and handling

Specification PREDATOR 4375W, SKU 72912 Honda EG4000
Engine 212cc PREDATOR 270cc Honda GX270
Starting method Recoil Recoil
Weight 107 lb product weight 146.4 lb dry weight

The listed Harbor Freight unit is lighter by the manufacturers’ stated figures, though the figures use different descriptions—product weight and dry weight—and should not be treated as a controlled weighing comparison. Harbor Freight says the wheel kit for SKU 72912 is sold separately; Honda lists a two-wheel kit as an accessory. For a jobsite where the generator must be moved often, account for the kit, terrain and loading method rather than weight alone.

Carbon-monoxide protection and safe operation

SKU 72912 has Harbor Freight’s CO SECURE automatic shutdown system. Honda describes CO-MINDER as continuous monitoring with automatic shutdown before detected levels near the generator become dangerously high. These systems are additional safeguards, not permission to run a generator indoors or near an opening.

Harbor Freight’s 2024 owner manual for SKU 72912 warns: “Using a generator indoors CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES. Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide. This is a poison you cannot see or smell.” It directs users to operate the unit outdoors, at least 20 feet from people, animals and structures, with exhaust pointed away. Keep generators away from doors, windows and vents, and follow the exact model’s manual.

Warranty and listed price

Item PREDATOR 4375W, SKU 72912 Honda EG4000
Warranty 90 days for defects in materials and workmanship; emissions-control system coverage is two years, with limitations Three years residential; 12 months commercial. Honda says optional extended coverage is available up to 36 months
Price captured October 8, 2026 $479.99 listing price $2,099 MSRP

These are the respective manufacturers’ published terms and prices captured October 8, 2026, not a guarantee of current price, availability or final delivered cost. Verify the listing and full warranty terms before purchase. The price difference is substantial, but price alone does not establish value: first determine whether the actual outlet configuration and starting and running demands suit the work.

Which one fits your job?

Consider the PREDATOR 4375W if

  • The equipment’s combined running load and starting demands fit its 3,500W running rating and the specific receptacle limits.
  • You want the lower listed price and lighter stated product weight, and can work with its outlet mix.
  • You have confirmed that the unit is current SKU 72912, rather than relying on specifications for an older 4375W revision.

Consider the Honda EG4000 if

  • You need its particular combination of 120V GFCI duplex outlets and 125V or 125/250V locking receptacles.
  • The listed warranty terms, engine specification or Honda accessory options better fit your operating and service needs.
  • Your loads fit the same 3,500W rated-output baseline and the outlet and circuit ratings for the equipment you intend to run.

Manufacturer specifications do not establish that either generator is universally better or more reliable. For construction or backup use, compare the equipment’s nameplate requirements with the generator’s rated output, starting capacity, and outlet ratings before choosing.

Product figures and listed prices in this comparison were captured October 8, 2026. Verify specifications, stock and terms on the current Harbor Freight SKU 72912 listing and Honda EG4000 listing. Harbor Freight’s listings for older SKU 59207 and parts for SKU 63962 illustrate why checking the exact item number matters.
