Verdict: The $349 Level Lock Pro is one of the most discreet full-replacement smart deadbolts available, and Apple Home Key makes it especially appealing to iPhone and Apple Watch owners. Matter-over-Thread broadens its ecosystem compatibility, while built-in door-status sensing avoids a separate exposed magnetic sensor. But the lock is expensive before accessories: adding the $79 keypad, $79 Level Connect bridge, a longer strike plate, or installation can push a complete setup well beyond $500.
What the Level Lock Pro is
The Level Lock Pro replaces the complete deadbolt rather than merely adding a motor to an existing lock. Its electronics and CR2 battery are hidden inside the lock assembly, so the door keeps the appearance of a conventional deadbolt instead of gaining a prominent exterior smart-lock housing.

What is new compared with earlier Level locks?
The Pro’s most meaningful improvement is not a longer feature list; it is the combination of a newer hardware platform, native Matter-over-Thread, and door-status awareness built into the lock. The lock can identify whether the door is open, closed, or ajar without requiring a separate visible contact sensor.
Level also claims battery life of up to one year, described in its technical information as roughly nine to 12 months depending on use. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a verified long-term measurement. For comparison, Level gives the Level Lock+ Matter a typical battery-life figure of up to six months. The Pro’s technical specifications provide the current details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Pro also uses color-matched hardware and strike plates. It is important not to conclude that every older Level lock lacks Matter; the more accurate distinction is that the Pro is a newer model designed around built-in Matter-over-Thread and integrated sensing.
How you can unlock it
- Apple Home Key: Tap a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch to the lock. Level lists an iPhone XS or later with iOS 17.1 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 10.1 or later.
- Level Home app: Use the manufacturer’s app for setup, control, and Level-specific settings.
- Matter platforms: Control it through Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings when the required controller and setup are available.
- Physical keys: The mechanical backup remains important, particularly if the battery is exhausted.
- NFC fobs: The included fobs provide phone-free access for children, guests, or household members.
- PIN entry: The optional Level Keypad adds code-based access but costs another $79.
Depending on the configuration, Level also supports touch-to-lock or touch-to-unlock and auto-lock or auto-unlock. These are not interchangeable assumptions: independent hands-on coverage reported that touch-to-unlock and auto-unlock cannot be enabled simultaneously, and found Apple Home Key more dependable than waiting for auto-unlock in some situations. Treat those observations as testing results, not a guarantee for every door, phone, or software version.

- Effortless Matter Smart Home Integration: Ultraloq matter smart lock seamlessly integrates with all matter-enabled ecosystems. Voice control with Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant. It can be used to automate your smart home by pairing multiple matter-enabled devices through the one app. No more compatibility headaches. Requires a compatible Matter over Thread hub (Thread Border Router).
- Reliable Connection: Enjoy fast, stable, and responsive communication with Matter over Thread. The self-healing mesh network automatically reroutes connections if a device becomes unavailable, helping keep your smart home connected with minimal interruptions. Requires a compatible Matter over Thread hub (Thread Border Router).
Apple Home Key is also not the same thing as remote access. Local unlocking with a phone, watch, key, or fob can work without the same infrastructure needed to control the lock from outside the home. Remote Matter control and many automations require a compatible Apple Home hub or other Matter-over-Thread controller.
What Matter-over-Thread adds
Matter is the interoperability layer; Thread is the low-power local mesh network carrying the lock’s communication. In practical terms, the Pro can fit into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings rather than being tied exclusively to Level’s app.
That does not mean setup is hub-free. For remote access and the fullest smart-home experience, you need a compatible Matter-over-Thread hub or border router, such as an appropriate smart speaker, display, Apple TV, or other supported controller. It must also be positioned well enough for a reliable Thread connection. Alternatively, the $79 Level Connect Wi-Fi Bridge can provide Level-centric Wi-Fi-connected functionality.
Matter improves compatibility, but it does not guarantee feature parity. Firmware handling, notifications, door-status presentation, and automation controls can vary by platform, app version, hub, and firmware. Level’s own explanation of the Pro notes that some advanced controls and firmware-update behavior remain tied to the Level Home app.

The hardware supports door-position detection, but the information a homeowner sees may differ substantially between ecosystems. Independent hands-on testing reported different door-status behavior between Apple Home and Google Home. Check current app and firmware behavior before buying if door-status automations are central to your project.

- True Hands-Free Unlocking with UWB Technology: Experience a new era of smart access — UWB (Ultra-Wideband) detects your incoming presence, direction, and intent to unlock automatically as you approach. It provides a faster, more convenient, and highly secure way to enter your home without touching the lock. Perfect when your hands are full, you're wearing gloves, or arriving in the rain. (Note: UWB unlocking requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and is supported on Apple Watch Series 6 or later (excluding SE) running watchOS 11.5+ and iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE & iPhone 16e) running iOS 18.5+.)
- All-in-One Unlocking Options: Enjoy Apple home key tap-to-unlock (requires an Apple Thread-enabled Matter controller: HomePod 2nd Gen, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K 2021/2022), plus fingerprint, touchscreen passcode, voice assistant control, app remote access, NFC card support (card sold separately), and a physical key, giving you flexible, reliable ways to enter your home in any situation.
- Matter Over Thread for Multi-Ecosystem Compatibility: Built with Matter over Thread, the U400 can connect to multiple smart home platforms simultaneously, allowing you to enjoy the unique features of each ecosystem. Thread offers faster response, more stable connectivity, lower power consumption, and secure data transmission. Note: A Thread-enabled Matter controller from each ecosystem is required for its respective platform.
- Convenient Rechargeable Power System: Powered by a rechargeable and removable lithium battery that lasts up to 6 months per charge. Use the lock's USB-C port to recharge without taking the lock offline, or remove the battery and charge it separately. A low-battery voice alert will notify you when the battery drops below 20%, ensuring you never get caught off guard.
- Certified Security & Outdoor Durability: BHMA-certified for proven protection, mechanical strength, and long-term reliability. The IP65-rated exterior guards against dust and water for dependable outdoor performance. Plus, the rekeyable design allows you to change the physical key without replacing the entire lock cylinder.
Installation: discreet hardware still needs a good door
On a compatible, well-aligned American deadbolt, installation is generally a Phillips-screwdriver replacement. “Standard” does not mean universal, however. Level lists these requirements:
- 21⁄8-inch standard ANSI bore hole
- 23⁄8-inch or 23⁄4-inch backset
- 13⁄4- to 2-inch door thickness
- Included 21⁄4-inch short strike plate
- Optional 23⁄4-inch long strike plate
Level says the supplied strike plate must be installed directly on the door frame, not layered over the old strike plate. It also says strike plates from other manufacturers or other Level locks are not interchangeable with the Pro.
Installation checklist
- Confirm the bore, backset, and door thickness.
- Check that the door closes smoothly without pushing, lifting, or pulling.
- Remove the old deadbolt and strike plate.
- Test-fit the Pro’s bolt and motor assembly.
- Install the correct Level strike plate directly into the frame.
- Move or adjust the strike if the bolt rubs or fails to align.
- With the bolt fully retracted, attach the housings.
- Make sure the electrical contacts meet completely.
- Insert the single-use CR2 lithium battery.
- Pair the lock in the Level Home app.
- Add it to the selected Matter ecosystem.
- Test the physical key, app control, Home Key, fobs, auto-lock settings, and door-status reporting.
Door binding is the most important practical warning. A motorized deadbolt cannot reliably overcome a bolt that already scrapes the strike or requires force. Level also warns that incomplete electrical contact can disable touch unlocking, Home Key, key cards or fobs, and sound. Test the bolt manually before trusting the motorized operation.

The Pro uses one hidden, non-rechargeable CR2 lithium battery. Level claims up to one year, with a stated approximate range of nine to 12 months depending on use. Frequent operation, auto-unlock, wireless conditions, and configuration can reduce actual life. Keep the physical key accessible and replace the battery before relying on the lock as your only entry method.
Level lists the Pro as BHMA Certified AAA and provides ANSI Grade 1/A-related and UL 10C compliance claims. It says the lock was tested to 250,000 cycles, which it describes as equivalent to 135 years of average use. It also lists IPx4 water resistance and an operating range of -4°F to 140°F. These are manufacturer specifications and certification claims, not a promise that the lock is invulnerable.

Real-world security depends on several layers:
- The lock body’s certified strength
- A sound door and properly anchored frame
- Correct strike-plate installation
- A secure Level or smart-home account
- Security on the phone or watch used for access
- The security of the home network and Matter hub
IPx4 means protection against ordinary splashing and rain exposure, not immersion. It also does not correct structural problems around the door.
What the complete system costs
| Configuration | Known component total |
|---|---|
| Level Lock Pro | $349 |
| Pro plus Level Keypad | $428 |
| Pro plus Level Connect | $428 |
| Pro plus Keypad and Connect | $507 |
| Pro plus long strike plate | $369 |
| Pro plus Keypad, Connect, and long strike plate | $527 |
These totals exclude tax, shipping, and installation. The Level product page showed professional installation at $180, with a $99 promotional price at the time captured. That discount is time-sensitive; confirm the checkout price rather than treating it as a permanent cost.
The $349 lock therefore makes the most sense when you already have the required hub and do not need a keypad. If you need PIN access and a separate bridge, the real hardware price is already $507 before labor.
Who should buy the Level Lock Pro?
Buy it if
- You want a smart lock that still looks like traditional door hardware.
- You use Apple Home and will regularly use Home Key.
- You already own a compatible Matter-over-Thread controller.
- You want Matter flexibility across major smart-home ecosystems.
- NFC fobs are useful for children, guests, or service providers.
- You are willing to pay for concealed electronics and industrial design.
- Your door meets the dimensions and closes without binding.
Choose something else if
- Lowest cost is the priority.
- A keypad must be included rather than purchased separately.
- You need identical door-status features in every smart-home platform.
- Your door is warped, difficult to close, or poorly aligned.
- You do not own a compatible Matter-over-Thread controller and do not want to buy one.
- You need a retrofit solution that preserves unusual existing hardware or exterior trim.
Bottom line
The Level Lock Pro’s premium is easiest to justify for an Apple Home household that values Home Key and refuses to put a conspicuous smart-lock module on the door. Its Matter-over-Thread support and built-in sensing make it more flexible than a basic invisible lock, but platform differences and installation quality still matter.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For everyone else, the value calculation is harder. A keypad, bridge, long strike plate, or professional installation can quickly erase the appeal of the $349 starting price. Buy the Pro for its elegant hardware and Apple-centered convenience—not because it offers the lowest cost or perfectly identical features across every ecosystem.
