PerthNow reported an expected cost of nearly $30 million in August 2024; that figure is an estimate, not a confirmed final cost. Hale’s published target is handover in the first half of 2027, with commissioning listed for early 2027.
What Hale School is building
The planned Science and Engineering building will sit immediately north of the Admin Green at Hale School’s Wembley Downs campus. It is intended to bring science teaching and engineering activities into a purpose-designed facility, replacing laboratories Hale says were part of the campus’s original build in the early 1960s. The school moved to Wembley Downs in 1961, according to its capital projects page.
Hale describes the project as a two-storey building. In a 2024 interview with PerthNow, Headmaster Dean Dell’Oro said: “We’ve known that we’ve needed to upgrade the space for quite some time.” He described the planned centre as dedicated to science, biology, physics and mathematics, while incorporating newer technologies such as engineering.
What facilities are planned
Hale says the building will include generously sized, industry-standard laboratories, workshops and manufacturing spaces, supported by new technologies and planned for multimodal teaching. The design also includes spaces for collaborative and informal work, alongside staff areas with visual connections to those spaces.

These are planned features and stated educational aims; the project sources do not report measured learning outcomes from the facility.
Why the existing laboratories are being replaced
Hale says its current science laboratories date from the early 1960s and require an upgrade. The project is part of a wider campus redevelopment: the school said its old Art building had been demolished to make way for the new facility, with Art classes moved to part of the Peter Wright Technology Centre.

Reported cost and project funding
PerthNow reported on 22 August 2024 that the project was expected to cost nearly $30 million. That was a reported estimate at the time, not a final account. Hale’s later project announcement and the Foundation’s 2023–2025 impact report do not state a revised or final cost.
Hale’s capital projects information says families contribute to a Building Fund through an Endowment Fee and that the Foundation may seek additional support for specific projects. The Foundation’s 2023–2025 report says it is contributing to this project from its investment corpus. The reviewed project sources identify Hale and Foundation support; they do not identify State funding.

Construction and expected completion
PerthNow’s August 2024 report said construction was then scheduled to start around mid-2025. Hale’s announcement of 22 July 2025 said the Board had approved the project, described a sod-turning ceremony as its official commencement and stated that construction had commenced. The Foundation’s 2023–2025 report also noted that a 45-metre crane had been installed for the build.
Hale expects handover in the first half of 2027. Its capital projects page lists commissioning for early 2027. These are published targets, not confirmation that the building is complete or in use.

Project timeline
