Yes—you can turn the IKEA OBEGRÄNSAD LED wall lamp into a Wi‐Fi-controlled programmable display. The documented modification replaces or bypasses IKEA’s original controller and connects an ESP32 to the lamp’s four LED matrix panels. With suitable firmware, the lamp can show custom graphics, animations, brightness-controlled patterns, and creative-coding visuals.

This is not a simple firmware update. You must open the lamp, potentially drill out or damage its rear fasteners, add a controller and logic-level conversion, and rework low-voltage power and signal wiring. The guide below describes the documented approach while highlighting the electrical, mechanical, firmware, and safety issues that determine whether the finished lamp is reliable.

What this modification changes

The factory OBEGRÄNSAD contains four LED matrix panels, an original controller board, panel interconnects, and a USB-powered 5 V supply path. IKEA’s controller provides five built-in lighting programs. IKEA describes the lamp as a 5 W USB-powered product; the cited regional product page lists article number 005.262.48, dimensions of 52 × 36 × 6 cm, and notes that the USB-A power adapter is sold separately. Article numbers and internal hardware may vary by market or revision, so inspect the actual lamp before modifying it.

The ESP32 project takes over the control function. It does not replace the LED panels themselves. The panels and their driver circuitry remain in place while the original controller is disconnected or bypassed and the ESP32 sends the required control signals.

That distinction matters: the project is a hardware replacement, not a supported way to reflash IKEA’s controller. The result can be a networked pixel display suitable for custom artwork, notifications, installations, animations, or creative-coding experiments.

See the original project coverage at Hackaday and the documented community wiring reference at the Frekvens hardware wiki.

Before you start: safety and reversibility

Unplug the lamp before opening, wiring, or soldering. Although the lamp uses a low-voltage USB input, modified wiring can still cause short circuits, overheating, reverse polarity, unstable power, exposed conductors, or USB backfeeding. Use a regulated 5 V supply with adequate current capacity, insulate every solder joint, and do not leave the modified lamp unattended until it has passed extended testing.

  • Remove the lamp from the wall before working on it.
  • Disconnect every USB power source before touching the electronics.
  • Do not rely on the original rear panel for electrical protection after modification.
  • Use heat-shrink, strain relief, and secure wiring so cables cannot be pinched when the lamp is closed.
  • Assume the modification may void the warranty, damage the lamp, and make IKEA service impractical.
  • Do not connect the ESP32 to a computer by USB while the lamp is independently powered unless the circuit has been deliberately designed to prevent backfeeding.

This is a conceptual block diagram, not a universal wiring diagram. The final pin assignment, power topology, signal direction, and panel order must match the firmware version, ESP32 board, and lamp revision you are using.

Keep two parts of the system conceptually separate:

  • Logic control: clock, data, chip select, output enable, and possibly the button input.
  • LED power: the 5 V and ground path that supplies the panels’ current.

A logic-level shifter translates control voltages. It does not supply LED current and cannot compensate for an undersized adapter, thin cable, poor connector, or inadequate power distribution.

Parts and tools

  • IKEA OBEGRÄNSAD LED wall lamp.
  • An ESP32 development board supported by the current firmware.
  • A suitable logic-level shifter for the clock, data, chip-select, and output-enable signals.
  • A regulated 5 V USB power supply and cable sized for the modified load.
  • Hookup wire, connectors, solder, flux, heat-shrink, and insulation.
  • Small screwdrivers and plastic pry tools.
  • A drill or rotary tool if the rear fasteners must be removed by drilling.
  • Optional decoupling capacitors with suitable voltage ratings and correct polarity.
  • Replacement screws, clips, or adhesive for the rear panel.
  • Multimeter and, ideally, a current-limited bench supply for initial testing.

Do not assume every ESP32 board is interchangeable. Check the current firmware’s supported board target, available GPIOs, boot-strapping behavior, physical dimensions, USB arrangement, and voltage domains before buying or wiring a board. Espressif’s ESP32 product information and documentation portal are useful references, but the project repository remains the authority for its current configuration.

Opening the lamp

  1. Disconnect power. Remove the USB cable and take the lamp off the wall.
  2. Protect the work surface. Place the lamp face-down on a soft, clean surface that will not scratch the front.
  3. Inspect the rear fasteners. The rear panel appears to use rivet-like fasteners rather than ordinary screws.
  4. Try gradual separation. Work around the perimeter with plastic tools and apply force progressively. Avoid levering directly against LED boards or connectors.
  5. Consider drilling. Hackster’s account describes drilling out the rivets as a way to reduce the chance of breaking the rear panel; Hackaday describes the back as difficult but accessible with prying force. Neither method is guaranteed to be nondestructive.
  6. Photograph everything. Record connector locations, wire colors, panel order, and wire orientation before disconnecting anything.
  7. Do not pull on panel wiring. Connectors and solder joints may be more fragile than they appear.

Plan reassembly before removing the cover. Once rivets are gone, use replacement fasteners or clips that cannot contact a circuit board, pinch a wire, obstruct the panel, or compromise the lamp’s wall mounting.

Identify the internal hardware

Inside are four LED matrix boards, the original controller, connector wiring, and an accessible header area on the first LED panel. The exposed, normally unpopulated header is the key to the documented controller replacement.

Label the original controller connections before disconnecting them. The exact physical arrangement may differ between article numbers or revisions. Do not force a connector based only on wire color; verify polarity and continuity with the lamp unpowered.

The community hardware reference identifies these logical functions:

Signal Function
CLA Chip select
CLK Serial clock
DI Serial data / MOSI
EN Output enable
SW Button input
VCC Logic supply
GND Ground
DC+ / DC- High-current LED power

The panel interface is SPI-like, but these names do not guarantee a universal pinout or voltage requirement for every revision. Confirm the markings on your board and the current firmware documentation.

Power: the most important design issue

IKEA lists the lamp at 5.0 W. The community hardware reference reports a possible full-load demand of up to 2 A at 5 V, or approximately 10 W, and recommends a supply rated for at least that continuous output.

These figures should not be silently merged. The 5 W figure may describe the factory product’s operating condition, while the 10 W estimate may represent a modified or worst-case condition with a different brightness or pixel pattern. A custom firmware mode that illuminates every pixel can stress the original power path more than IKEA’s built-in animations.

Design around the higher documented demand unless measurements of your particular lamp establish otherwise:

  • Use a stable regulated 5 V supply with adequate continuous current capacity.
  • Check the USB cable’s quality and current capability, not just the adapter label.
  • Keep LED power separate from logic-signal reasoning.
  • Measure voltage at the panels under load if resets, dimming, or flicker occur.
  • Start at low brightness and increase it gradually.

The community reference says the USB input initially powers one panel and that power is passed to the others through the panel bus. Parallel power injection to the four panels may improve voltage distribution and reduce noise. Any such modification must preserve polarity, avoid shorts, and use wiring and connectors suitable for the current.

Logic-level conversion

Many ESP32 GPIOs operate at 3.3 V. The community documentation flags a logic-level shifter as required for the lamp’s control signals because the LED-driver logic may expect a higher voltage level.

Translate the signals that require it—typically clock, data, chip select, and output enable—according to the actual voltage domains and the chosen hardware. Connect grounds between the ESP32, shifter, and lamp. Select a shifter that supports the signal speed and direction of each line.

Do not assume a generic bidirectional I2C level-shifter breakout is suitable. I2C boards are designed around open-drain buses and pull-ups; SPI-like clock and data signals may require a unidirectional or direction-controlled device with appropriate rise time and voltage ratings. The firmware repository or an electrical schematic should determine the final topology.

Firmware: the documented path

The central open-source project is Philip Stapelfeldt’s ikea-led-obegraensad ESP32/Arduino project. Hackster describes the original project as MIT-licensed.

Repository instructions can change, so verify the current documentation rather than copying an old board menu path or library list. Before wiring the lamp, confirm:

  • Supported ESP32 board target.
  • Required Arduino libraries or build system.
  • Configuration-file names and locations.
  • Wi‐Fi credential setup.
  • GPIO definitions.
  • Upload method and serial-monitor expectations.
  • Web interface or network-control method.
  • Panel-order and display-orientation settings.
  • Changes introduced by later forks.

The community reference shows example constants:

#define PIN_CS 1
#define PIN_SCLK 2
#define PIN_MOSI 3
#define PIN_OE 4
#define PIN_SW2 5

These are configuration examples, not universal ESP32 requirements. GPIO numbering, board labels, boot-strapping behavior, and available pins differ between boards. In particular, a lamp signal can hold an ESP32 strapping pin in the wrong state and prevent booting.

Recommended installation sequence

  1. Download the current firmware source.
  2. Identify the supported ESP32 board and install the required development environment.
  3. Configure Wi‐Fi credentials and GPIO constants.
  4. Compile the firmware before connecting the controller to the lamp.
  5. Flash the ESP32 and verify that it boots by itself.
  6. Disconnect the programming cable.
  7. With all power removed, wire the ESP32 and level shifter to the lamp.
  8. Confirm common ground, signal orientation, polarity, and power wiring.
  9. Make sure the ESP32 cannot receive unintended power through both its USB port and the lamp’s USB input.
  10. Power the lamp from the regulated 5 V supply.
  11. Test a low-brightness diagnostic pattern.
  12. Join the ESP32’s network or find its assigned IP address.
  13. Check button behavior, image orientation, and panel order.
  14. Run the lamp for an extended period before closing the rear panel.

What successful first boot looks like

A successful installation should boot without repeated resets, illuminate all four panels, respond to the network interface, and remain stable when brightness changes. The image should be correctly oriented rather than mirrored, shifted, or rotated. No panel should be significantly dimmer than the others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Begin with a checkerboard, border, grid, or one-panel-at-a-time test rather than a complicated animation. Diagnostic patterns make it easier to distinguish panel-order errors from signal-integrity or power problems.

  • Support many kinds of interfaces such as UART/SPI/I2C/PWM/DAC/ADC.

Brightness, capacitors, and reliability

The newer community firmware supports brightness control through PWM. PWM can expose weaknesses that factory programs do not: flicker, supply noise, resets, or uneven brightness. The hardware reference suggests considering approximately 85 μF or more of total capacitance near the driver and LED circuitry, based on the SCT2024 data sheet.

Treat capacitors as an optional stability improvement, not a mandatory cure. Use the correct voltage rating and polarity, place capacitance close to the relevant circuitry, and distribute it rather than putting one large capacitor at a distant point. First check the supply, cable, connectors, grounding, and power distribution. A capacitor cannot fix an undersized adapter or incorrect wiring.

Advanced uses

Once the controller works, the display can show custom animations, user-created images, and drawings instead of IKEA’s five factory programs. The project can serve as a networked pixel display for notifications, artwork, live data, or creative coding.

Hackster also documents a tixy-based extension that streams generated visuals to the display. Treat that as an extension or fork, not as a guaranteed feature of the base firmware. Likewise, do not assume compatibility with WLED or a particular home-automation platform unless a current, specific implementation supports this panel hardware.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely causes Recovery
ESP32 repeatedly resets Undersized supply, voltage drop, excessive brightness, poor ground, PWM noise, or boot-pin conflict Disconnect power, reduce brightness, test the ESP32 separately, measure 5 V under load, improve power wiring, and revisit GPIO assignments.
Only one panel works Incorrect interconnect, missing power distribution, reversed signal orientation, damaged connector, or insufficient current through the daisy chain Test panel connections independently, verify signal order, check DC+ and DC− continuity, and consider parallel power injection.
Image is mirrored, shifted, or scrambled Wrong panel order, timing, bit order, chip-select/output-enable assignment, or orientation configuration Run a diagnostic pattern and change one orientation or panel-order setting at a time.
ESP32 connects to Wi‐Fi but the display is blank Logic mismatch, wrong pins, missing ground, incorrect polarity, or unsuitable chip-select/output-enable settings Verify level-shifter direction and rails, signal continuity, 5 V at the panels, and firmware configuration.
Works dimly but flickers brightly Supply or cable current limit, voltage sag, PWM noise, poor distribution, or insufficient local decoupling Lower brightness, use a higher-current 5 V supply, improve power injection, then consider correctly rated local capacitors.
ESP32 will not boot Strapping-pin conflict, simultaneous USB power, short circuit, or incorrect supply wiring Disconnect the lamp, test and flash the ESP32 alone, reassign conflicting pins, and eliminate unintended backfeed.

Reassembly and long-term testing

Do not permanently close the lamp after the first successful image. Run it at low brightness, then test the intended maximum brightness and animation speed. Watch for resets, flicker, uneven illumination, hot connectors, cable heating, and intermittent network behavior.

Secure the ESP32 and level shifter so they cannot move or contact the panel boards. Add strain relief to new wires. Replace removed rivets with fasteners or clips that fit without pressing on electronics. Confirm that the rear panel closes without pinching wires and that the finished lamp can still be mounted securely.

When this hack makes sense

Choose the modification if you already own the lamp, want a large physical LED matrix, enjoy soldering and firmware work, and value open-ended graphics more than warranty preservation or commercial support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the factory controller if you want the simplest and safest result. Reconsider the project if you lack soldering equipment, need a professionally enclosed product, require plug-and-play smart-home support, or cannot safely work around exposed electronics and modified wiring.

Alternatives include building a conventional addressable-LED matrix, using a prebuilt Wi‐Fi display, or selecting a compatible LED platform designed for WLED or another supported firmware. Those options may be less visually distinctive, but they can provide clearer documentation, easier replacement, and fewer product-revision uncertainties.
