Google’s final reminder on April 2, 2024, came just days before Nest Secure support ended on April 8, 2024. The most urgent step applied to owners whose Nest Guard was serving as the Wi-Fi bridge for a Nest x Yale Lock: they needed to set up a Nest Connect and create or confirm a Yale keypad passcode by April 7.
The shutdown is now historical. Nest Secure no longer connects to Google’s cloud services or works in the Nest app, and Google’s 2024 replacement offers have expired.

The short version
- April 7, 2024: The last recommended day to set up Nest Connect and create or confirm a Yale Lock keypad passcode.
- April 8, 2024: Nest Secure support ended. Nest Guard stopped serving as the Wi-Fi bridge for Nest x Yale Locks, and Nest Secure lost cloud and Nest app connectivity.
- May 7, 2024: The deadline expired for eligible owners to claim either an ADT Self Setup System valued at up to $485 or $200 in Google Store credit.
- May 20, 2024: Google’s cellular-backup cancellation target date.
Google’s announcement also covered Dropcam and Dropcam Pro, as well as certain Works with Nest functionality. It did not mean that every Nest camera, thermostat, doorbell, or Nest Aware subscription stopped working.

Who needed to act before the shutdown?
The critical group was Nest x Yale Lock owners whose locks depended on Nest Guard for Wi-Fi connectivity. Nest Guard was part of Nest Secure, so its bridge function ended along with the security system.
Owners in that position needed to:
- Create or verify a working Yale Lock keypad passcode.
- Obtain a Nest Connect, either by using an existing unit or by following Google’s eligibility instructions.
- Set up Nest Connect in the Nest app before April 7.
- Place it within range of the Yale Lock; an existing unit might need to be moved closer.
- Test both app connectivity and local keypad operation.
Nest Connect preserved the lock’s Wi-Fi bridge. It did not preserve the Nest Secure alarm, its cloud service, or its security notifications.
What happened to the Yale Lock?
Without Nest Connect, a Nest x Yale Lock that had relied on Nest Guard could disappear from the Nest app or lose remote app control after the shutdown. The physical keypad could still lock and unlock the door, provided the owner had a working code.

A keypad code was a fallback for local access, not a replacement for remote control, app status, or alarm functionality.

If the lock is offline now
- Use the keypad locally if you have a valid passcode.
- Check whether a compatible Nest Connect is available and configured.
- Move an existing Nest Connect closer to the lock if range is a problem.
- Repeat setup using Google’s current Nest Connect guidance.
- If you need a supported alarm, treat the lock issue and the alarm replacement as separate decisions.
A lock that works at the door but is missing from the app is consistent with losing its former Nest Guard bridge. Installing Nest Connect may restore the bridge function, but it cannot bring Nest Secure itself back online.
What stopped working on April 8, 2024?
According to Google’s support documentation, owners lost Nest Secure access through the Nest app, cloud connectivity, internet connectivity through the system, and app-based status checks and notifications. Google also stopped providing software and security updates.
Google does not recommend relying on Nest Secure as an unsupported offline alarm. Its behavior may degrade unpredictably, so it should not be treated as a dependable replacement for a current security system.
Google’s replacement offers were temporary
Eligible U.S. Nest Secure owners were offered one of two transition benefits:
Rank #3

- Blanket a whole room - Motion sensors detect motion within 35 feet, have a 90 degree field of view and get along great with pets under 60lbs. Perfect for full room coverage when placed in a corner.
- An ADT Self Setup System at no charge, with a stated value of up to $485.
- $200 in Google Store credit instead.
The offer required eligibility and a specific communication or redemption process. The deadline was May 7, 2024. Those offers have expired and should not be presented as currently claimable in 2026. The old equipment offer also did not automatically mean that future professional monitoring, taxes, permits, or other service charges would be free.
Google did not introduce a new Google-branded Nest Secure alarm line as part of the transition. ADT was the promoted replacement path.
What happened to cellular backup and subscriptions?
Cellular-backup support was separate from the April 8 shutdown. Google said existing cellular-backup subscriptions would be canceled by May 20, 2024.

Owners should not assume that every related subscription canceled automatically. Check the provider that billed each service, including Google, a cellular partner, or ADT. Monitoring, cellular backup, and camera subscriptions can have different cancellation rules. Google’s Nest account guidance and ADT’s account FAQ distinguish account deletion from canceling separately billed services.

- Like-New Ring Alarm 8-piece kit is refurbished, tested, and certified to look and work like new and comes with the same limited warranty as a new device. Like-New Amazon devices may be packaged in generic Amazon-branded boxes.
- A great fit for 1-2 bedroom homes, this kit includes one base station, one keypad, four contact sensors, one motion detector, and one range extender.
- Includes an intuitive Keypad that can arm and disarm your Alarm and Contact Sensors that detect when doors or windows open.
- Choose the Ring Alarm Kit that fits your needs and detect even more with additional Alarm Sensors and accessories (sold separately) at any time.
- Receive mobile notifications when your system is triggered and monitor all your Ring devices all through the Ring app.
Nest Aware was not automatically the same thing as Nest Secure alarm monitoring. Do not assume that ending Nest Secure canceled Nest Aware or unrelated Nest products.
What owners should do now
- Stop relying on Nest Secure. It is no longer a supported cloud-connected alarm.
- Protect local lock access. Confirm that your Nest x Yale Lock has a usable keypad code.
- Investigate Nest Connect. Use it if your main goal is to preserve Nest x Yale Lock app connectivity and the hardware remains compatible.
- Replace the alarm if you need security coverage. Look for current software, app alerts, sensors, optional professional monitoring, and cellular backup.
- Review old charges. Check cellular-backup, monitoring, and camera subscriptions individually.
- Recycle obsolete hardware. Google says its recycling partner can provide a postage-paid shipping label by email; consult Google’s current instructions for availability.
Nest Connect or a complete security replacement?
Nest Connect may be enough if the alarm is no longer needed and the priority is restoring app connectivity for an existing Nest x Yale Lock.
A new security system is the better fit if you need a supported alarm, professional dispatch, door and window sensors, motion detection, smoke or water protection, cellular backup, or dependable mobile notifications.
