Guide to Owl-Friendly Gardens: Can Owls Help Control Garden Pests?

Owls may hunt rodents or insects, depending on the species, but a garden nest box is no guarantee of occupancy or pest control. Learn how to support local owls safely.

Owls can be welcome predators in a garden, but attracting them is not a dependable way to eliminate mice or insects. The most useful approach is to support the owl species native to your area with suitable habitat, avoid rodent poisons that can expose predators, and treat a nest box as a possible nesting resource—not a pest-control device.

How do I attract owls to my garden?

Start by finding out which owl species occurs locally and whether your property connects to habitat it uses. Owls have different diets and nesting needs, and a yard by itself may not provide enough prey, cover, cavities, or safe flight space. Regional wildlife guidance can help identify local species and suitable habitat.

Support the habitat your local owl uses

  • For Barn Owls: open habitat and access to small mammals matter. Cornell Lab of Ornithology describes Barn Owls as birds of open landscapes that feed mainly on small mammals. Vineyard researchers also found Barn Owls preferred nest boxes near natural cover such as grasslands and oak savanna; their advice was to retain wild habitat near boxes. Cornell’s Barn Owl guide and its coverage of the California vineyard study provide more detail.
  • For Eastern Screech-Owls: tree cover, nesting cavities or a suitable box, and brushy cover can be relevant. They use tree cavities and readily accept nest boxes. See Cornell’s Eastern Screech-Owl guide.
  • For Elf Owls: needs are region-specific, and their diet is chiefly insects and other arthropods. They are associated with wooded or desert habitats, rather than being a general-purpose garden insect-control option. See Cornell’s Elf Owl guide.

Where safe, retain existing cavity-bearing trees and suitable vegetated or semi-open habitat. A nest box addresses a shortage of nesting cavities; it does not supply food or replace other habitat needs.

Should I put up an owl box?

A species-appropriate owl nest box may help where natural cavities are scarce and the local owl uses boxes. Cornell notes that Barn Owl boxes have helped in areas with few natural nest sites, while Eastern Screech-Owls readily accept boxes. Neither fact means a box will be occupied at a particular property.

  3. Place it only where the surrounding habitat is appropriate; a box cannot make an unsuitable yard into good owl habitat.
  4. Allow for the possibility that no owl will use it. Installation does not guarantee occupancy or measurable pest reduction.

Do owls keep mice out of the garden?

Some owls eat mice and other small mammals, but there is no general figure establishing how much attracting owls reduces pests in a household garden. The strongest quantified example in the sources is from California vineyards—not backyards.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s circa-2021 coverage of a Humboldt State University study reports that researchers estimated one Barn Owl family killed 3,000 rodents over a year in vineyards. The article also reports that GPS-tracked owls spent one-third of their hunting time in cultivated land. Researchers reported nearly 200 prey items per chick during the 10 weeks before fledging, with prey consisting mostly of gophers, voles, and mice. These findings describe a particular agricultural setting and cannot be used as a backyard forecast. Read Cornell’s account of the vineyard study.

What do owls eat besides mice?

Diet depends on the species. Barn Owls principally take small mammals; Eastern Screech-Owls eat a broader range of small animals, including insects and mammals; and Elf Owls chiefly eat insects and other arthropods. Owls are predators within a wider food web, not targeted pest devices. Their prey can include animals a gardener does not consider pests, and prey choices vary by species and location. The available sources do not establish a general garden-level insect-control benefit from attracting owls.

Are rodent poisons dangerous to owls?

Rodent poison can expose predators that eat poisoned rodents. Cornell notes that rodents make up a large share of Barn Owl prey and that Barn Owls may be susceptible to rodent poisons. Avoid treating rodenticide use as compatible with trying to support owls; exposure can also affect other predators. The cited source does not set out a locally tailored pesticide protocol, so consult regional wildlife and pest-management guidance for specific alternatives.
